To inculcate a great sense of patriotism, we join in commemorating the “Buwan ng Wika” (Month of Filipino Language). LVF meaningfully celebrates National Tech-Voc Day. LVF DESIGNS PH-ISRAEL FRIENDSHIP COMMEMORATIVE CARD

Aug. 08. The Israeli Embassy in Manila has chosen to team up with the Laura Vicuña Foundation girls to design a commemorative card in celebration of the 66^th Anniversary of the formal establishment of diplomatic relations between Israel and the Philippines, symbolizing friendship between the two countries.
 
Ambassador Ilan Fluss expressed in his message that card-making “is a simple yet meaningful celebration connecting two countries through art. You [girls] are creating something that signifies friendship between our two countries! ”
 
The best designs were chosen by the Ambassador himself and will be printed as holiday cards to be distributed to partners and officials to support the foundation’s work for the protection and empowerment of children and in building the CULTURE OF PROTECTION.

LVF CONDUCTS HOME VISITATION TO LEARNERS
August 11. Sr. Maria Imelda David, FMA, and Ms. Delia Valledor, RSW, conducted a home visitation to learners in Barangay Cabayugan, Puerto Princesa City. They must cross five sizable rivers, mountains, beaches, and the most challenging road to arrive at the learner’s home, close to the “Dalampasigan” or the beachfront where the boat landed. Their primary source of income is fishing, and they live in homes made of lightweight materials. People turn to backyard gardening when it’s bad outdoors and going to the sea isn’t an option. 

2023-2024 BRIGADA ESKWELA

Aug. 12. In partnership with the parents, the community of Laura Vicuña Foundation Inc.-Palawan conducted the Brigada Eskwela for the school year 2023-2024 in the center. While the fathers fixed the damaged utilities, the parents, who had willingly come, cleaned the “Kubo,” the roadside, and the garden. Both parents and learners are excited about the incoming school year. The Community thanked the parents for their cooperation and effort for this school year’s Brigada Eskwela.

LVF – PSU PARTNERSHIP

Aug. 5. The Laura Vicuña Foundation Inc. is very grateful to the Palawan State University (PSU) San Rafael Campus for deploying their BS Agriculture OJT’s freshmen students in the center. Their valuable efforts in doing farm activities as part of their OJT requirements were a big help for the center. After 240 hours of actual practice on the farm, the community of Laura Vicuna was preparing an appreciation program for them. The program started with the opening prayer, followed by the opening message given by Sr. Rosalia Panganiban, FMA, OJT’s presentation, and a video presentation of their performance prepared by Mr. Wernher Cervantes was followed by the thank you message of Prof. Francisca Milagros R. Dimaano, school adviser and director. Ms. Matet Palma, the agency adviser, gave the closing remarks. The Laura Vicuna Foundation hopes to maintain its good relationship with PSU San Rafael College for many years.

RECEIVING THE SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION

Aug. 18. Four resident learners, Jovie Ann Espinosa, Anna Espinosa, Cecilia Cervantes, and Gia May Magdayao, finally received the sacrament of confirmation with the other youth at San Ezekiel Moreno Parish, Barangay Macarascas, Puerto Princesa City, with the precedence of Bishop Socrates C. Mesiona, MSP, D.D. Apostolic Vicar of Puerto Princesa.

LVF LEARNERS’ PARISH INVOLVEMENT

Aug. 19. Ms. Delia Valledor, RSW, assisted the volunteer learners in joining the celebration of the 25^th Founding Anniversary of San Ezekiel Moreno Parish. The learners actively participated in the various activities prepared by the Parish. They shared their experiences with their fellow learners in the center and how they were able to contribute to winning the games through their leadership skills.  

LVF PALAWAN JOINS THE WPU TRIALOGUE FOR THE BSSW INTERNSHIP

LVF Palawan, as a partner agency of Western Philippines University (WPU), Puerto Princesa Campus, joined the Pinning Ceremony and Orientation cum Trialogue of the WPU Bachelor of Science in Social Work (BSSW) program for their interns’ deployment as part of the BSSW Field Instruction I: Case Work and Group Work. The university endorsed to LVF Palawan their five (5) BS Social Work interns: Ms. Nelly Mae Ysulat, Ms. Hazel Padon, Ms. Divine Grace Rubi, Ms. Jeziel Mendoza, and Ms. Preal Ivy Abid, under the school supervisorship of Ms. Christine S. Garobo, RSW, MSW.

LVF JOINS THE LOCAL SALESIAN WORLD YOUTH DAY 2023
Aug. 07. Six young people of the Laura Vicuña Foundation: Shane, Remilyn, Hannah, Edralyn, Ysabelle, and Khayeale, together with Sr. Sheila Marie Ducot, Sr.Sarah Robas, Sr. Phebe Lacse and Sr. Marivic Sta. Ana participated in the celebration of the Local Salesian World Youth Day held at Don Bosco Makati. Hundreds of young people from various Salesian communities joined the event and were grouped into three groups: Francisco, Lucia, and Jacinta, where participants deepened and shared the theme Arise and Go in Haste. Ysabelle shared that “us, youth, do have a big role not just in our society but also in Church. Being one with Jesus in and outside the Church. How? By simply checking on our classmates, and asking how they are doing. In doing so, we can make them feel that there are people who care. Mary goes in haste in following Jesus… We youth should imitate Mary: always on the go not in “galaan” but in doing kindness to others. We must have eyes that see who needs help just like how Mary knew that her cousin Elizabeth needed her, and with haste, she helped her.”

NATIONAL FIRE TRAINING INSTITUTE-FOAC OUTREACH AT LVF

Aug. 11. The National Fire Training Institute-Fire Officers Advance Course (FOAC) of Class Makadasig conducted an outreach program at LVF in Cubao, QC. They taught the girls various fire safety measures, demonstrated how to use the fire extinguisher, and gave dental fluoride to the girls! The girls were overjoyed to get a close-up look at a real fire truck and firemen in person. They salute the heroism of our fire officers.

151st INSTITUTE DAY OF THE DAUGHTERS OF MARY HELP OF CHRISTIANS CELEBRATION

Aug. 05. “The Sisters are such wonderful blessings”, one of the comments read to LVF’s Facebook post on the 151^st Institute Day of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians. The girls lovingly gave each sister a hand-made crocheted symbol representing their symbol, like a hand, jar, pearl, plant, boat, and star, as they expressed how grateful they were for being under the care of the Salesian Sisters throughout these years. On Aug. 13, the LVF CPC Communities celebrated the 151st Institute Day as well. Through song and dance presentations, they expressed their gratitude for the presence of the Salesian Sisters in their community. 

LVF WELCOMES SR. CELINE 

Aug. 12. The LVF Educating Community (EC) excitedly welcomed the presence of Sr. Celine Jacob, FMA, one of the FMA Visiting Councilors! She was accompanied by Sr. Josefina Carrasco, FMA, and Sr. Cynthia Calabig, FMA. In her dialogue with the girls, Sr. Celine emphasized that “LVF is indeed your family…in your collaboration and cooperation with the Sisters, you can achieve your dreams. You can become an agent of social change…” She also encouraged the girls that if “you receive something good, you also give it to someone, making a chain of unbroken love.” Before she said her goodbye, Sr. Celine assured them that they “are good, and beautiful”

VIDES KOREA IN CUBAO

August 1. Eight (8) VIDES Korea volunteers visited LVF as part of their mission camp! Sr. Maria Younghee Kim, FMA accompanied them and was assisted by Sr. Melanie Pilar, FMA, and Sr. Sarah Robas, FMA. They came to the Philippines to share their God-given talents through volunteering, learn new, and at the same time, promote Korean culture, and learn the spirit of solidarity. After the short program, they had an eco-friendly activity with the girls using live moss to decorate one’s place. It is called sacandiamoss, which purifies the air. The activity also provided a moment of a close encounter, sharing, and laughter among the VIDES volunteers and the girls.

STUDENTS’ ORIENTATION FOR SY 2023-2024
August 01-02. LVF- Malihao started the School Year (SY) 2023-2024 with an Orientation at the School Multi-Purpose Hall. As Sr. Guia Asparen, FMA, School Directress, welcomed the students, she also introduced the other five (5) FMA Sisters assigned in the school. The Technical Directress, Sr Ernielyn F. Deypalan, FMA introduced the teachers, staff, and support personnel. During the Student Orientation, the following topics were discussed for two consecutive days: the Vision, Mission, Quality Policy and Institutional Values, School Rules and Regulations, Scholastic Regulation, Issuance/ Withholding of Credentials, Dual Training System (DTS) and The 5 ‘S’ of Good Housekeeping. 

PRE-EDUCATION SUMMIT 2023 & TESDA INSPECTION

August 17. Sr. Ernielyn F. Deypalan, FMA attended the Pre-Education Summit 2023 at Victorias City Sports and Amusement Center together with other private and public schools in Victorias City. On the same day, the TESDA Provincial Director of Negros Occidental Provincial Office (NOPO), Dir. Niña Connie G. Dodd, with Jellie Kate M. Tumonong and Herloyd Acuna, conducted an ocular inspection of the school under Memorandum No. 346 s. 2023 of TESDA. They checked the facade and facilities of the school including the workshop areas, equipment, tools, supplies, and materials, learning resource area, and copy of the Trainer’s/National TVET Trainer Certificate (NTTC) posted in the workshop area.

TESDA 29TH ANNIVERSARY AND NATIONAL TECH-VOC DAY

August 25. Sr. Ma. Guia S. Asparen, FMA, Sr. Ernielyn F. Deypalan, and Ms. Ailene M. Ondon, TESDA Focal Person joined the TESDA 29th Anniversary and National Tech-Voc Day at Ayala Malls Capitol Central in Bacolod City. The activity was spearheaded by the provincial government of Negros Occidental in collaboration with TESDA, the Provincial Public Employment Service Office, and the Department of Labor and Employment. The TESDA Negros Occidental Provincial Director, Dir. Niña Connie G. Dodd, and actress Sue Ramirez, representing Victorias City Mayor, Javier Miguel Benitez were also present that day.
 
In the afternoon, the LVWDTC Faculty and Staff had an encounter with Sr. Aurora Roble, FMA at the school AVR. They discussed the Don Bosco Project specifically for the ISO Accreditation of the school.

2023 ORIENTATION CONFERENCE ON THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL VOUCHER PROGRAM SY 2023-2024

August 10. Sr. Ernielyn F. Deypalan, FMA, and Ms. Ailene M. Ondon joined the 2023 Orientation Conference on the Implementation of the Senior High School Voucher Program S.Y 2023-2024 at the University of San Agustin Auditorium in Iloilo City. The Processing of Billing Documents and Monitoring of Participating Schools; Information Security and Data Privacy Protection; and the SHS Voucher Management System were discussed.

Aug. 24. The LVF-Malihao joined in the celebration of the Buwan ng Wika 2023 with a theme “Filipino at mga Katutubong Wika: Wika ng Kapayapaan, Seguridad, at Ingklusibong Pagpapatupad ng Katarungang Panlipunan”. The students participated in different contests such as singing contests: Kundiman/Tagalog Songs; Poster Making; Spoken Poetry; Poetry; and Declamation. Winners of each contest received some school supplies and a Certificate of Participation. LVF Cubao celebrated the Buwan ng Wika as well where each group participated in the cheer and dance, declamation, and enjoyed games prepared by their fellow Vicunians assisted by the Sisters.

INSTITUTE DAY CELEBRATION

Aug. 05. In celebration of the Institute Day, the LVF-Malihao community joined in the Eucharistic celebration. With this year’s theme “MAIN: A Woman For Her Time, A Woman For All Time”, the students prepared a world-class presentation, dedicating these performances to the Sisters! The Sisters too expressed their appreciation for the community’s effort by singing the Salve Regina. Sr. Ma. Guia S. Asparen, FMA, School Directress, gave her thank you message to the people behind and in front of the program. She also asked everyone to continue praying for them to reach their 60^th anniversary in the mission. The Community is also blessed with the presence of Sr. Ma. Clara Alacapa, FMA, Sr. Leilanie Baranao, FMA, Sr. Victoria Octoso, FMA, and Sr. Grelyn Cruzat, FMA, FMA Sisters assigned in Bacolod City, who joined in the big celebration.

The LVF’s virtual catechesis continues to reach out to CPC communities with Sr. Sheila Ducot, FMA via meeting every Sunday of the week. This Sunday is alternately conducted by Sr. Sheila, Sr. Phebe, and Sr. Sarah after every month.

SOLIDARITYSERYE

In August, LVF prepared and distributed more than 300 hotpacks of soup and bread to Heneral Uno, Cavite; Taguig; and Marikina which were affected by heavy rainfall. LVF is grateful to RFM for its continuing support of LVF’s Solidarityserye efforts through bread donations.

PASWI-COP

The Philippine Association of Social Workers Inc. (PASWI) continuously creates a venue to express the interreligious faith of each co-hosting PASWI Chapters and participants. It is a Wednesday habit of Social Workers all over the Philippines running for more than two years now via Zoom videoconferencing and is streamed live to the PASWI National Facebook page.Throughout these years, there have been a lot of inspirational testimonials of people who have been transformed by their faith.This month of August, PASWI Misamis Occidental-Ozamiz City (MOOC); Bahay Pag-Asa Youth Center Puerto Princesa; Baguio-Benguet; and Zamboanga City.

FLY HIGH IN JULY

LVF flies high in July with smiles and goodbyes. July is a month of completion, perfection, and settlement. It is also the beginning month after half of the year is gone. It is also a time of celebration for LVF for ministries well done. We commend Sr. Rosalia Panganiban and her five (5) staff who passed the TESDA National Competency Assessment for Trainers Methodology Level 1. That boosts LVF Palawan as an Agricultural Training Site. We celebrate Ms. Mercedes A. Juncia’s graduation with her MA in Pastoral Theology. We thank and bid farewell to our four invaluable staff who are moving on to the next chapter of their lives.  It is also a month of deployment of our TVI graduates to LVFs partner companies. With Jesus and Mary, we wish everyone a great start. Fly high!

LVF CONGRATULATES ITS TESDA-CERTIFIED TRAINERS & ASSESSORS

July 5-9. Sr. Rosalia A. Panganiban, FMA (Farm Administrator), Ms. Matet P. Palma (Farm Manager), Mrs. Ronnie A. Palma (Farm Maintenance), Mrs. Wernher M. Cervantes (Human Resources), Jose Pedro C. Gabua, and Orly C. Elcano (LVF – Trainees) for passing the National Competency Assessment for Trainers Methodology Level 1 conducted in Puerto Princesa City. With LVF’s certified trainers and assessors, there would be a great chance to be prioritized by TESDA in granting scholarship funds that would really help the center to improve its facilities and provide opportunities to the people being served by our center. We aim to make the farm staff and trainers competent and to become assessors as well by acquiring other training aside from Organic Agriculture (OAP).

LVF JOINS BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS EDUCATION WORKSHOP

July 4-6. LVF through Mr. Ryan Azucena, participates in the Sr. Mariani Dimaranan, SFIC Human Rights Institute (SMDHRI) Basic Human Rights Education Workshop held at Titus Brandsma Center, New Manila, Quezon City. This is to train priests, consecrated persons, and lay partners in Human Rights work (i.e. basic Human Rights Orientation, practical and Hands-on application of laws in real-life situations, advocacy work, JPIC, pastoral and school ministry, among others). This was organized by the Task Force Detainees of the Philippines (TFDP), a mission partner of the Conference of Major Superiors in the Philippines (CMSP)- formerly the Association of Major Religious Superiors in the Philippines – AMRSP. The three-day seminar-workshop covered topics on Human Rights – Concepts and Principles; Spirituality and Human Rights; Human Rights Situation in the Philippines; Basic Evidence and Interviewing Clients and Witnesses; an Overview of the Country’s Legal System; and Writing of an Affidavit. As one of the champions of child protection and an advocate of mainstreaming children’s/human rights, LVF partners with various organizations, who, like LVF, promote the CULTURE OF PROTECTION. 

LVF CHILD PROTECTION CLINIC (CPC) ON WHEELS: EMPOWERING CHILDREN, FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES

July 15. The LVF’s Child Protection Clinic (CPC) on Wheels continues to roam around with its team, headed by Mr. Ryan Azucena together with Khayerale Leal, a youth advocate, Ms. Maui, a volunteer and Rose Jean and Arnulfo as LVF staff, conducts an outreach and advocacy activities to Child Protection Communities (CPC) of Heneral Uno, General Trias Cavite. The session consists of a set of games for the children and adults as one of the essential components of the Child Protection Clinic (CPC) and a seminar on the Rights and Responsibilities of the Children which also includes the type or forms of abuse to the children. This also provides children and parents with the opportunities to reflect on their difficult situation by basically learning about child protection rights and how these are violated through situations of child abuse, sexual abuse, child labor, pornography, bullying, domestic violence, etc. Besides the prizes, the participants were also given each a kilo of rice, bread, and biscuits.   LVF continues to empower the children, families, and communities to be self-managing.

COMMEMORATION OF THE WORLD DAY AGAINST T.I.P

July 30. More than three hundred (300) children, youth, and families, participated in LVF’s commemoration of the World Day Against Human Trafficking, LVF conducted a virtual advocacy dubbed END T.I.P (Trafficking in Persons) facilitated by Mrs. Carla Juncia. She underscored the three elements of human trafficking: the acts; means; and purpose and shared her personal experience of a near-trafficking experience. Ms. Vivian Yap, a participant from the CPC shared a tip to ensure the safety of their children “Maging matalas ang pakiramdam at maging matibay ang loob sa pagharap sa mga karapatang pantao at mapanuri sa mga usapin sa paligid at laging manalangin para sa kaligtasan sa lahat ng bagay, oras at panahon.” (Be sharp and courageous in dealing with human rights, be critical of the surrounding issues, and always pray for safety in all things.) Sr. Sheila Ducot, FMA, thanked the communities for being “an LVF committed partners in safeguarding human rights, fight against human trafficking.”

On July 22, Mrs. Mercedes Carla-Alba Juncia graduated in MASTER IN PASTORAL MINISTRY at Adamson University! Mrs. Carla is also a PRC Licensed MedTech and at the same time, a PRC Licensed Social Worker. Her dedication and hard work are an inspiration to the young. She thanked LVF, especially Sr. Marivic who was instrumental in taking this master’s degree.

SCHOOL PROMOTION CAMPAIGN

July 01, 06, and 21. The Laura Vicuna Women Development Training Center (LVWDTC) faculty and staff together with Sr. Ma. Guia S. Asparen, FMA conducted a series of school promotion campaigns in the Municipality of Manapla, and in Victorias City, particularly in Villa Victorias, Brgy. Estado and Gawahon. The team went out to the peripheries and far-flung mountainous areas of Victorias and Manapla. This extended school campaign aims to increase the awareness of families and learners who can greatly benefit by enrolling in our Senior High School and TVI programs for the school year 2023-2024.

NETWORKING AND TRAINEES’ DEPLOYMENT TO PARTNER COMPANIES

July 15. Sr. Ma. Guia S. Asparen, FMA, School Directress, and Ms. Ma. Socorro C. Bayles, Industrial Coordinator, went to various companies in Bacolod City for the deployment/employment of our trainees. In God’s providence, they were able to establish a partnership with Ponce Group Food Division (Jollibee, Mang Inasal, Greenwich, and Red Ribbon). 
 
July 26. Sr. Ma. Guia S. Asparen, FMA, accompanied the 3 Technical-Vocational Institute (TVI) Hotel and Restaurant Services (HRS) trainees, Irene Ferrer, Loreynz Sa-ad, and Claire S. Barillo to Silay-Bacolod Airport for their deployment to Mary Help of Christians College – Canlubang. On July 29, trainee Ma. Andrea S. Ditching, Nowelha Ivy R. Enojo, Princess Angel B. Cruz, and Rafael N. Salapar were deployed, accompanied by Sr. Yvonne Therese L. Jance and Ms. Ma. Socorro C. Bayles, Industrial Coordinator.

WELCOME AND CLOSING PROGRAM FOR PSU INTERNS

July 7. Twenty-five (25) freshmen students of the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture of Palawan State University – San Rafael Campus have completed their 240-hour On-the-Job training at LVF-Palawan. As a send-off, the center prepared a program for them. The interns had a presentation for the Sisters and staff as well. Certificate of Completion and special awards to recognize the effort and output of the interns.

On the same day, the community joyfully welcomed the second batch of 24 freshmen students of the BS in Agriculture of PSU, San Rafael Campus, for their 240 hours of internship compliance. It begins with a short program. Prof. Francisca Milagros R. The LVF SolidaritySerye continues to be ‘solid’ as it continues to reach out to its Child Protection Communities. The Sisters, girls, and staff prepared hot soup partnered with bread which was distributed by the staff, Ms. Sai and Ms. RJ. The participants during the virtual commemoration of the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons received the foodpacks.

LVF VIRTUAL CATECHESIS

LVF’s weekly catechesis every Sunday, continues to be life-giving among its Child Protection Communities. According to 1 Cor. 12:4-6, “There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit gives them. There are different ways of serving, but the same Lord is served. There are different abilities to perform service, but the same God gives ability to all for their service.“ Just like Don Bosco, LVF catechesis aims for the salvation of the souls.

We journeyed together and shared the passion, and commitment to the mission for the young I am in awe with how far and how long they have imparted their gift of talents, compassion, and enthusiasm to bringing the Salesian teachings to LVF communities with Ate Lisa, serving for 23 years, Ate Carla for 13 years, Tatay Eyen for 7 years, and Sir Ryan for almost four years! Just WOW! I have learned so much from them! I am sad and happy at the same time. Sad because they will not be with us here at the center and I am happy for their new beginnings. Excited to see what the Lord has in store for them. We will surely see each other in Negros! It is not goodbye but see you soon.” said Ms. Sai.

Positive feelings, notably joy above all others, underpin the month of June. This month, we celebrate each other’s successes by working together to protect children, attaining yet another educational milestone, discovering other nations’ cultures, and taking time to stop, think, and appreciate nature.  At LVC, we thank the Lord for our dear Sisters’ joyful and generative presence. SR. MARIVIC & SR. CANDY, FMA, JOINS SAFEGUARDING SEMINAR IN ROME, ITALY

June 19-22. Sr. Ma. Victoria (Marivic) Sta. Ana, FMA, and Sr. Candy Carmen Balverde, FMA, attended the 2023 International Safeguarding Conference (ISC) at Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, Italy. The ISC has been designed to help people work together to protect children and vulnerable adults from abuse. Prior to the Conference in Rome, a series of small group discussions among various organizations were conducted on six continents via Zoom videoconferencing tackling Accountability to (1) Children; (2) Survivors; (3) Organizations; and (4) the Public. Sr. Marivic as a safeguarding professional/expert was chosen to be one of the 7 participants for the four-month-long study under Dr. Naomi Navarro Poca, MD. The conference is attended by individuals from various backgrounds, including Church leaders, safeguarding professionals, trauma specialists, and others dedicated to preventing and tackling abuse. The aim of the ISC is to provide a platform for learning, networking, and sharing best practices in safeguarding. The main theme for this year is “Sustaining Organisational Accountability.” The whole conference is composed of presentations of speakers who are experts in safeguarding, working group sharing, Q and A with the Keynote speakers, and at the end, a platform for interaction and exchange between practitioners and researchers.

LVF-PALAWAN REAP PROGRAM MOVING-UP CEREMONY!
June 5. The Laura Vicuna Foundation Inc – Palawan community held the Moving-Up Ceremony for eight (8) Junior High School completers under the UST Angelicum College Inc.- Re-Entry Education Agenda for the Poor (REAP) Program. Sr. Rosalia A. Panganiban, FMA, LVF -Palawan Center new Superior/Animator, gave an inspirational message and congratulated the completers and their parents. The completers recited their pledge of becoming a past pupil of Don Bosco, led by Mrs. Matet P. Palma, a past pupil, and staff. This marks yet another significant turning point in the lives of the graduates. Four (4) years of effort, sacrifice, and deciding to live apart from their families have paid off. All parents express their appreciation for the care, compassion, and support they have received from the Laura Vicuna Foundation Inc., the FMA Sisters, and especially to the UST Angelicum College.

The Laura Vicuna Foundation Inc. – Palawan conducted an orientation for the first-year College of Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Students of Palawan State University (PSU) San Rafael College for their practicum, lasting 240 hours. Around one hundred thirty (130) beneficiaries of 4Ps San Carlos City, Negros Occ. (children, youth, and mothers) participated in an advocacy session on I am BRAVE (Buddies Reject Abuse, Violence, and Exploitation) conducted by Ms. Mercedes Juncia on June 10, 2023, at the covered court of Brgy.  Ermita, Sipaway Island. There was no dull moment for the attendees during the interactive discussion. In conclusion, they committed to do the following: be careful, alert, and cautious all the time, be critical thinkers,  and above all, respect one another.

LVF’s #FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS IN ESCALANTE

June 06. More than 300 pupils of Buenavista Elementary School, Escalante City, have joined LVF’s #FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS facilitated by LVF’s Child Advocates, headed by Sr. Marivic Sta. Ana, FMA & Sr. Erlinda Soriano, FMA, with the staff. It was a sincere discussion in which the students shared their aspirations to become teachers, police officers, or doctors, to name a few. “Mag-aral nang mabuti; maging mabait; maging masunurin” (do good work in your studies; act morally upright and submit to authority) are some of the suggestions they provide for how to put those goals into action. Some even said that helping their parents, whom they have watched struggle, even sending them to school, is the only way to realize their aspirations. It is incredible to hear that these students are conscious of their circumstances, aware of and appreciative of their parents’ efforts, and committed to pursuing their goals.

COMMEMORATION OF THE WORLD DAY AGAINST CHILD LABOR

June 24. In observance of the World Day Against Child Labor, LVF held an advocacy education session concerning children in general and child labor issues in the Philippines. The session was led by Ms. Khaye Leal, an LVF Child Advocate, with assistance from Mr. Ryan, an LVF Social Worker. While Mr. Ryan talked about the reporting process, Ms. Leal emphasized the distinction between child work and child labor and offered its legal description in accordance with RA 9231. The grim reality of child labor in the Philippines is not unfamiliar to Filipinos. The chance to put food on their tables is one of the many variables contributing to youngsters becoming victims of this crime. On June 23, LVF was invited by the Council Against Child Labor (NCACL) to lead the World Day Against Child Labor (WDACL) Culminating activity through an invocation at Buena Park Sports Complex, Caloocan. This year, the WDACL theme is “Buong Bansa, Lahat ng Bata, sama-sama para sa Batang Malaya“.  LVF continues to advocate for the protection and empowerment of children.

June 05. LVF is proud with the achievements of its four learners, Shane, Vicky, Lyka, and Josephine, who received their diplomas from UST Angelicum’s Junior High School. Vicky said, “I am thankful for the chance the UST Angelicum REAP (Re-entry Education Agenda for the Poor) Program provides for students like us. I feel extremely fortunate to have the Laura Vicuna Foundation, Inc., the Sisters, and in particular, Sr. Marivic, FMA, who have supported, guided, and encouraged each of us to reach our full potential”

SUMMER RECREATIONAL VACATION

Sun, sand, and sea. Far from the busy life of Metro Manila, the LVF girls, Sisters, and staff took a moment to pause, breathe in the salty and calming sea wind, and enjoy the feeling of being at one with nature during their summer recreational vacation in the Sta.Ana’s private resort in Negros Occ. This is after the graduation of LVF’s six (6) scholars. God has indeed made all things beautiful. Everyone enjoyed taking turns riding the kayak; others took the opportunity to learn how to swim or at the least, learn how to stay afloat. It was an experience that they will always remember. “Ang saya! First time kong magdagat” Princess, a Vicunian, exclaimed! The sea is like the abounding grace of the Lord.ꟷ So vast. So rich. It soothes. It heals. Added to their escapade is the tour at Campuestuhan Highland Resort in Talisay where they saw dinosaurs in motion, giant gorillas, and more. The LVF Community is grateful to the Sta.Ana family for their generous accommodation especially to Sr. Marivic, Atty. Regis Puno, Mr. Andy Lok, and Atty. Mean Diccion-Recto for making this vacation possible.

6th SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL AND 23^RD TVET GRADUATION-MALIHAO
June 10. The Laura Vicuña Foundation Inc.- Malihao held the 6^th Senior High School (SHS) and 23^rd Technical Vocational Institute Commencement Exercises at the School Multi-Purpose Hall with seventy (70) graduate students. The Baccalaureate Mass was presided by Fr. Eligio Santos, SDB. A former student of the LVWDTC, who recently professed as a Daughters of Mary Help of Christian, Sr. Ma. Unissa M. Caberoy, FMA, was invited as the guest speaker and shared her life’s journey. As they entered the stage to receive their diplomas, the students and their parents were excited and grateful.

BOOKKEEPING NC III EXAMINATION

June 08-09 &16. Nineteen (19) Grade 12-BOT and ten (10) Technical-Vocational Institute (TVI) – Business and Office Technology trainees of Laura Vicuña Foundation Inc.- Malihao took the three-day Bookkeeping NC III examination at Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) RTC- Talisay City, Negros Occidental. Six (6) out of twenty-nine (29) trainees passed. The school is proud of them for giving their best.

TRAINEES’ DEPLOYMENT

June 27-30. The Laura Vicuna Women Development Training Center (LVWDTC) has deployed twenty-five (25) trainees to its various partner companies in Manila and Negros. Sr. Sheila Marie A. Ducot, FMA, Sr. Ernielyn Deypalan, FMA, and Ms. Ma. Socorro C. Bayles deployed 25 LVWDTC students to its different partner companies in Manila and Negros for their training! Fifteen (15) trainees were deployed to Alter to Fit, four (4) were assigned to Lots a Pizza, five (5) trainees to Pet Express, and the remaining one (1) was sent to Alas Oplas. On June 29, two garment technology trainees were deployed in Ysabelle’s Bridal Shop in Bacolod by Sr. Therese Yvonne L. Jance, FMA, and Ms. Ruby Ann B. Querubin. Everyone expressed their gratitude to Sr. Yvonne for her tenacity and dedication in raising funds (for meal costs and toiletries) for these young dreamers. We ask the Lord to keep blessing her for having a good heart. 

ON-THE-SPOT BEST RESEARCH PROPOSAL CONTEST

June 26. As part of the Victorias City Environment Week Celebration 2023, the Laura Vicuña Foundation Inc.- Malihao participated in the “On-the-Spot Best Research Proposal Contest” hosted in Gloriville Subd. Brgy. 13, Victorias City. Three Grade 12 Business and Office Technology (BOT) students who participated in the competition were Arnel B. Beronia, Angela G. Sepsia, and Vea C. Villarea. They each took home the consolation prize of 900 pesos. Their coach, Ms. Ma. Victoria V. Seluce supported them by accompanying them throughout the competition. Despite not having won the competition, the students are thrilled for the experience of being able to engage is what matters most to them. 

DISCOVERING JAPANESE LANGUAGE AND CUISINE

June 05. The Grade 12-level trainees in the Hotel Restaurant Services (HRS) and Technical Vocational Institute (TVI) – Hotel Restaurant Services (HRS) took part in the Japanese language and cuisine lesson led by Sr. Lido, FMA, along with her Japanese friends Ms. Megumi Tanabe, Mr. Oishi Mitsuhisa, Mr. Yukihito Mochizuki, and Ms. Shizuka Hori. They taught the students how to make sushi rice, “Sumeshi” and Japanese Rice, “Hakumai.” The students presented them with a thank-you card to show appreciation for their generosity.

YEAR-END OUTING-MALIHAO

June 12-14. The Laura Vicuña Foundation Inc.- Malihao faculty, staff, support personnel, and the 3 FMA sisters, Sr. Ma. Guia S. Asparen, FMA, Sr. Sheila Marie A. Ducot, FMA and Sr. Josefina D. Oliveros, FMA, had a great time on their three-day year-end outing in Cebu! Taking their time, they met with Sr. Lilimae G. Escasinas, FMA, former Technical Directress of the school. They traveled to Moalboal, Cebu, and enjoyed the resort’s pristine beach. Before traveling to Mary Our Help of Christians-Cebu to spend the night, they attended the Holy Mass at Minglanilla Parish Church in the afternoon. They all appreciated the FMA sisters assigned to the school’s warm accommodations. They sang them a song and presented them with a card as a sign of their appreciation. They also visited the Basilica de Sto. Niño and Magellan’s Cross in Cebu proper, and went straight to Sirao Flower Garden: Little Amsterdam in Cebu. It was a beautiful and memorable experience for all! Each member of the LVF-Malihao community had the chance to get to know one another better, which grew their sense of community and belonging.

June 27. The students of LVWDTC organized a short farewell program for Sr. Sheila Marie A. Ducot, FMA, Technical Directress, before her transfer to another community. the students created a video presentation that brought back memories for everyone. Some of the students presented her with cards that had heartfelt words, while others spoke to her directly and thanked her for her kindness, patience, and love toward them. Sr. Sheila expressed how much she appreciated their generosity and sincerity. In fact, she said that she is blessed to meet people like them. The faculty, employees, and Mr. Glen Tonog with Sr. Sheila at the Rooster Cafe in Silay City shared another farewell meal. They presented Sr. Sheila with a card and expressed their gratitude for what she had done to benefit everyone. Sr. Sheila was a bit emotional while expressing her amazement at the group’s unity.  

CUBAO. The LVF Community sincerely thanks Sr. Erly Soriano, Sr. Candy, and Sr. Marivic, FMA, for their selfless commitment to serving the community, particularly the children, the lost, the last, and the least. While Sr. Vic will continue to serve as LVF’s managing director, Srs. Erly and Candy will be transferred to another community. Our love and prayers accompany them as they continue with their new mission.

June 20. The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) conducted a rapid onsite assessment. The rapid assessment was a directive from the Department’s new head, Secretary Rex Gatchalian. The LVF center was praised by the ABSNET OIC, who noted that the facility is very child-friendly, clean, safe, and secure.

June 14. The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) regional office conducted a rapid assessment/spot visit to center-based (residential care) facilities, including the Laura Vicuna Foundation Inc – Palawan. It comprises personnel from Standard Section, Community-Based Section, Protective Services Division, and the Regional Alternative Child Care Office (RACCO). This ensures the program implementation’s safety, effectiveness, and sustainability.

As the Sisters and lay mission partner draw people closer to God, the LVF’s weekly virtual catechesis continues to be a source of life for its community. Participants engage in on the Holy Eucharist service following the catechesis. Ms. Eden Carmona, a consistent catechesis participant said “Unahin natin si Lord sa lahat ng bagay. Kahit anong pagod mo sa trabaho, kahit anong taas ng posisyon mo, palagi mo Siyang uunahin…kapag naencounter natin ang hirap at depression, magtiwala lang tayo ky God…Faith without action is dead…” (We should put God first. No matter how occupied or high our position is, put God first…whenever we encounter difficulties and depression, have faith in God. Faith without action is dead).

The LVF’s SolidaritySerye remains to be close and connected to the people in the community. The children who received the bread and other goods thanked the staff with a warm smile and a thank-you. LVF benefactors’ assistance has made this endeavor possible. We continue to pray to the Lord to grant them health and answer their prayers.

In this virtual prayer, social workers from several chapters expressed how their faith enabled them to handle the pressures of their jobs. Indeed, when you have faith, you can do many things in the glory of God! This Wednesday’s prayer is led by PASWI Exec. Dir. Mrs. Eva Ponce de Leon and Sr. Ma. Victoria P. Sta. Ana, FMA.

FLOWERS OF MAY

A flower festival known as Flores de Mayo, a Marian devotion in which flowers are dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, is a tradition in the Philippines that lasts the full month. Flores de Mayo which culminates in the Santa Cruzan depicts a custom that encourages a deeper search, understanding of, and love for Her Son, Jesus. At LVF, May blossoms with loving acts of love and devotion to children’s rights and protection. It is a month when LVF youth work to finish their academic courses and enjoy success. Mother’s Day and the anniversary of our beloved Sisters’ religious profession as Daughters of Mary Help of Christians on May 24 are also celebrated during this month.

A total of one thousand eight hundred seventy-five (1,875) students were given advocacy sessions on I am BRAVE (Buddies Reject Abuse, Violence, and Exploitation) by Ms. Mercedes Juncia for May.; The following were the schools given the advocacy sessions:  Jerusalem National High School, Cadiz on May 9 (76); Mabini Farm School, Cadiz on May 10 (300); Caduhaan National High School-Tagbanon Extension, Cadiz on May 11 (80); Andres Bonifacio National High School, Cadiz on May 15 (236); Magsaysay National High School, Cadiz on May 16 (84); Mabini National High School-Alimatoc Extension, Cadiz on May 17 (71); Manapla National High School, Manapla on May 23 (659) and Cervantes National High School on May 24 (369).  It was clear that these students wanted to learn and be taught.  During and after the workshops, students pledged to be on the lookout for signs of abuse, violence, or exploitation and to report any incidents they witnessed.  They took an active role and posed numerous questions. LVF’s I am BRAVE advocacy sessions in partnership with DepEd Cadiz, DepEd Neg Occ, and DepEd Escalante.

Mrs. Pinky Medalla and her husband, Central Bank Governor Felipe, were thanked by Mr. Francisco Dizon, Vice President of the Laura Vicuna Foundation (LVF), along with his wife Joyce (in the center), for publicly declaring that LVF is her favorite charity and encouraging others to do the same.

TECHNICAL WEEK
May 02. The Laura Vicuña Women Development and Training Center (LVWDTC) celebrated its Technical Week at the School Multi-Purpose Hall. Selected LVWDTC students actively participated in the friendly competition, where they showed their talents and skills in cooking, bedmaking, dressmaking, and speed typing. The winners of the cooking competition were Ma. Andrea Ditching, Hans Divinagracia, and Angelo Rufo, while Rowel Diolata emerged as the winner in bed making. All mentioned names were TVI Hotel Restaurant Services trainees. Shane Santiana, a Grade 12 Garments Technology student, and Laurence Fernandez TVI Garments Technology trainee, received a big applause after winning the dressmaking contest. In the speed typing contest, Loriemar Espiritu, TVI Business and Office Technology trainee won’t believe she was announced as the winner. Each winner was given a certificate and a cash prize.

HOUSEKEEPING NC II ASSESSMENT

May 23,30. Thirty-three (33) students from the Technical Vocational Institute and seventeen (17) students in Grade 12 of Hotel Restaurant Services took the Housekeeping NC II Assessment at Silay Institute over the course of six days. The students were tested in batches of ten (10) every day over the course of six (6) days. There were 50 applicants, and 48 of them received passing scores on the CARS or Competency Assessment Result Summary. Congratulations to the students, teachers, mentors, administrators, and all those who contributed to their success.

May 06. The Salesian Youth Movement (SYM) leaders, members, faculty, and staff planted hundreds of mangroves at Pasil as part of the SYM Touchdown! Mangroves are essential as one of their most crucial ecosystem functions is to protect and serve as a frontline defense for people and property along the coast. Its roots stabilize the coastline by reducing erosion from storm surges, currents, waves, and tides…Mangroves also serve to protect marine habitats (EcoWatch). We are grateful for the assistance, support, and warm accommodation of the Barangay Captain, Anna Mae Claro, and the Barangay Officials who were present that day. 

SR. GUIA’S 61ST BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

May 05. Sr. Ma—Guia S. Asparen, FMA, the School Directress of the Laura Vicuna Women Development and Training Center, recently turned 61, and the entire school community gathered in the School Multi-Purpose Hall to celebrate. The student leaders planned and led her special day’s brief program. The entire team wrote her a poem in “Hiligaynon” and recited it to her during her. The short program ended with a message from Sr. Guia and picture-taking. Everybody was so grateful that they could see Sr. Guia’s face lit up with happiness and joy.

UST ANGELICUM CONDUCTS ACHIEVEMENT TEST TO LVF-PALAWAN LEARNERS
May 4-6. The LVF-Palawan resident students took the three-days of standardized tests administered by teachers and volunteers from UST Angelicum College Inc. This assessment aims to determine whether the students are prepared to move on to the next grade level. Students expressed their appreciation to the UST Angelicum faculty and volunteers who made the exam possible.

PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT FORMATION

May 8. PASWI’s Executive Director, Ma’am Eva Ponce De Leon, and four Social Workers led the personality development training. Also participating was the Head of the Palawan CSWDO, Ma’am Lydia M. Del Rosario. Sir Tirso P. Segundo, RSW began the program with a prayer and then gave a brief orientation. Boys, girls, and parents all attended separate but concurrent sessions. Ma’am Eva addressed their feelings and invited them to voice their thoughts and worries at the center. Sir Tirso used an example from his own life to show how one’s outlook may change their circumstances. With their parents and the center’s encouragement, the students will develop a deeper appreciation for education and learn to seize every available learning opportunity. The Laura Vicuna Foundation Inc. – Palawan community was very grateful to Ma’am Eva, Ma’am Lydia, and CSWD Social Workers for their extended help to the foundation for young people. 

3-IN-1 CELEBRATION!

May 14. The Laura Vicuna Foundation Inc. Palawan community celebrated Mothers’ Day, Feast of Mo. Mazzarello, and birthday celebration of all May birthday celebrants, especially our beloved Sr. LG & Sr. Tita! On these special occasions, everyone did their part to prepare a delicious meal for lunch. Nay Ophil prepared fried and roasted calamares and broiled fish using the large fresh fish and enormous squid that Tay Fred had given him upon his return from his fishing expedition. While Tom, our VIDES volunteer, grilled hot dogs, the staff chipped in to buy a cake, while Rubelyn and the Learners made Kangkong shakes and halo-halo. The barbecue, rice, and other dishes were a group effort.

AMBASSADOR ILAN, M’ME GILA & RYTHMANIA VISIT LVF
May 03. Ambassador Ilan Fluss of Israel, his wife M’me Gila, and the Israel Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ICCP) Company with Rythmania, an all-female drumming ensemble from Israel, returned to the LVF community for a second occasion this year. As part of their eco-friendly performance, the group used pails and water jugs as drums. Everyone in the room is compelled to get down and groove. Amb. Ilan and his wife even got up and danced.  There was music, dancing, and the sharing of talents throughout the afternoon.

May 20. The Laura Vicuna Foundation is proud of Ms. Chelsea Salera for passing the 2023 Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET)! Ms. Salera is an LVF scholar and a graduate of the Colegio de Sta. Ana de Victorias (CSAV), Victorias City, Negros Occidental, where she earned a Bachelor in Elementary Education.In this article, Ms. Salera has shared the way to her success with us!
 
“I applied at ROLE Finance and Corporation after finishing college. I was working on passing the March 2023 teacher licensing exam by attending the review sessions on Saturdays and Sundays from 7:30 AM to 5:00 pm. I saved up for my allowance each week, contributed half of my paycheck to the review center, and occasionally sent money to my sisters. That was a tough situation. working throughout the week and studying on the weekends. At times, I had to miss out on work in order to be a part of the evaluation among other top-tier professionals from the Famous Professional field. I was very anxious while I awaited the outcome. I gave it my all. On March 19, the results were out. I was shaking! My two days of social media use were brief. I waited till I got a text telling me that I passed! Praise the Lord! I passed the exam! I want to thank the Laura Vicuna Foundation, Inc., and Sr. Marivic Sta. Ana, FMA for allowing me to study at CSAV. To the Sta. Ana family, I extend my gratitude as well. May 30. LVF congratulates Ms. Mary Ann Ole and Ms. Hannah Babes Yap, who graduated from Senior High School at Colegio de Sta. Ana de Victorias, Victorias City Negros Occidental. Ms. Ole took the TVL Track, while Ms. Yap took HUMMS. This is a moment I have been looking forward to for a very long time. The path to realizing my ambitions has just been a little bit clearer. As a CSAV-IS alumnus, I pledge to live my life according to the principles I was taught there. CSAV-IS honed me to become better person.” said Ms. Ole. Furthermore, she added, “I especially thank the Laura Vicuna Foundation, Inc., the Sta. Ana Family, especially Sr. Marivic, who paved the way and opened opportunities for me to pursue my studies.”

FEAST OF MOTHER MAZZARELLO 

May 13. The LVF girls and staff offered a lighted candle after the rosary on the Feast of Mother Maria Domenica Mazzarello and our Lady of Fatima. Sr. Mary Domenica Mazzarello is the co-foundress of the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians with St. John Bosco. Mo. Mazzarello proved herself adept in spiritual training and guidance, and she had the particular charisma of happy and reassuring tranquility, radiating joy, and involving other young girls in a commitment to the education of women (archive.sdb.org).

BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS ORIENTATION SEMINAR

May 16-17. Laura Vicuna Foundation, Inc (LVFI), through its representative Mr. Ryan Azucena, attended the Basic Human Rights Orientation Seminar – Luzon Central held at CBCP Caritas Philippines Development Center, Brgy. Asisan Tagaytay City. Various religious groups sent representatives to this two-day seminar, which lay collaborators and dioceses from the National Capital Region, southern Luzon, and central Luzon also attended. Topics in the two-day orientation included the (1) Fundamentals of Human Rights and Red Tagging by Atty. Chel Diokno, (2) Spirituality and Human Rights by Fr. Christian Buenafe, O.Carm, (3) Transitional Justice by Atty. Cecilia Jimenez and (4) Workshop on Basic Documentation Principles by Task Force Detainees of the Philippines (TFDP). Atty. Chel resonated the famous line of his late father, Jose Diokno, also known as “Ka Pepe”:

“No cause is more worthy than the cause of human rights. Human rights are more than legal concepts: they are the essence of man. They are what makes a man human.” 

Another highlight of the seminar orientation is on Spirituality and Human Rights, which Fr. Christian Buenafe, O. Carm, headed as the Chair of Task Force Detainees of the Philippines (TFDP) and Co-Executive Secretary of Conference of Major Religious Superiors in the Philippines (CMSP). He shared some of his experiences during the peak of Extra-judicial killings (EJK) in the Philippines. Many were killed without judicial proceedings, especially those in the marginalized sector, which violates our fundamental right to life and freedom from execution. Everyone has inherent worth, dignity, and rights that come from God, which is why spirituality and human rights go hand in hand. This seminar is of great help to the Laura Vicuna Foundation, particularly in its advocacy program towards Building a Culture of Protection for children and all Filipino families and individuals, deeply rooted in the principle that human right is inherent to all human beings. 

FLU VACCINE JAB!

May 21. Flu vaccination can keep you from getting sick with flu. The LVF community is thankful to Dr. MJ Torres of Zen Institute for financing 40 flu vaccines jabbed on the Vicunians, Sisters, and staff of LVF. In addition, the community appreciates Dr. Aika, Dr. Cza, and Dr. Marielle for flu jabs.

LVC CATECHESIS FOR BRGY BAT-US, VICTORIAS CITY

May 31.  On the Feast of the Visitation of Mary, on May 31, the Laura Vicuna Foundation (LVF), headed by Sr. Erly Soriano, together with 2 Social Workers, Mr. Ryan Azucena and Ms. Mercedes Juncia, gathered seventy (70) children from Barangay 1, Bat-us, Victorias City and conducted a short catechesis on the life of Mary. They thanked God for all His many blessings.  Flowers were offered to Mama Mary to culminate the Flores the Mayo celebration.  The lesson concluded with the kids enjoying some snacks that were supplied for them.  The LVF expressed their gratitude to the officials of Barangay 1 for their help in facilitating this event’s success.

LVF CELEBRATES MOTHER’S DAY

May 15. Mother’s Day is celebrated across the world. The girls at LVF performed a dance routine for the Sisters, Social Workers, and LVF personnel who had cared for them, and presented each of them with a crochet coin purse as a token of their appreciation. Those in need of a mother’s love and care have found it in the LVF personnel.

May 24. In the Feast of Mary Help of Christians, LVF celebrated and congratulated Sr.Marivic, Sr. Erly, and Sr. Candy for being a professed Salesian Sisters for 34, 26, and 22 years, respectively! In all these years, they have remained committed and continued loving, guiding, and journeying with the young people entrusted with their care. Ms. Carol Thor, in her Facebook message to the Sisters, expressed that she is “Grateful for the continued vocation of our dear sisters, Sr. Marivic Sta Ana, Sr. Candy, and Sr. Erly.  Thank you for your faithfulness. Thank you for all that you do for our children.”

MALIHAO
Sr. Josefina and Sr. Linda had simple yet meaningful celebration of the Feast of Mary Help of Christians as they and the boarders (faculty and students) participated in the Holy Eucharist at Mary Help of Christians Church. Four Salesians of Don Bosco concelebrated it with Fr. Gerald Libo-on as the main presider, an alumnus of Don Bosco Technical Institute, Victorias City, and a newly ordained diocesan priest who will be assigned at Our Lady of Victory Parish, Victorias City. His homily, simple as it was, was a life experience invoking Mary, our Mother, as the Help of Christians. After the mass, a couple crowned the Mary Help of Christians statue, showing their respect and reverence.

ADVOCACY CAMPAIGN: B.R.A.V.E

The Laura Vicuna Foundation reached a total of thousand hundred fifty-three (1,153) students for its advocacy sessions on I am BRAVE (Buddies Reject Abuse Violence and Exploitation).  The following are the schools which Mercedes Juncia has conducted for its sessions:  Washington National High School, Escalante, on April 4, 2023 (140 students); Dr. Vicente Gustilo Memorial National High School-Daga Extension, Cadiz, on April 11, 2023 (172 students); SPED National High School, Cadiz on April 12, 2023 (170 students); Banquerohan National High School, Cadiz on April 13, 2023 (164 students); Tiglawigan National High School, Cadiz on April 17, 2023 (120 students); Villacin National High School, Cadiz on April 18, 2023 (275 students) and Burgos National High School, Cadiz on April 19, 2023 (112 students). The pupils’ eagerness to learn and be taught was visible throughout the conversation.  They pledged to report abuse, aggression, and exploitation incidents and spread this advocacy among their family, friends, and other close relatives. These were in partnership with DepEd Escalante and DepEd Cadiz.

April 29. The Laura Vicuna Foundation, Inc., through Ms. Rosea Marie Monsay as resource speaker, talked about the R.A 11930 or the “Anti-Online Sexual Abuse or Exploitation of Children (OSAEC) and Anti-Child Sexual Abuse or Exploitation Materials (CSAEM) Act to Bachelor of Science in Social Work college students of University of Rizal System-Rodriguez Rizal Campus! The students shared that it was their first hearing and learning about the law. 

VOCATION PROMOTION: BE A SALESIAN SISTER!

April 29. On the Good Shepherd Sunday occasion, Sr. Erlinda Soriano, FMA, conducted a vocation promotion to University of Rizal System-Rodriguez Rizal Campus college students. Sr. Erly has shared how she became a Salesian Sister, encouraging young people to listen to their inner voice while choosing a Single Blessedness, Religious, or Married life path. But whatever you choose, may they heed the voice of God. 

BRIDGING CULMINATING ACTIVITY

April 02. The staff, Mrs. Matet Palma, Mr. Wernher Cervantes, and Mr. Thomas Macri, the VIDES volunteer, facilitated one-week bridging program activity (March 27-April 1) for the resident learners in Filipino, Science, and Math subjects. The purpose of this exercise is to aid in comprehending their modules. As a way to improve their writing abilities and presentation confidence, the facilitators showed them a video. After which, they were required to write a reflection using English. There was a spelling and Quiz Bee, Treasure Hunting, and Poetry contest to cap the bridging activities. Every level had different poem titles in YS 8, “A Tree,” YS 9, “O captain my captain,” and YS 10, “How do I love thee.” They have four (4) judges, Mrs. Ophelia Boniola, Ms. Delia Valledor, RSW, Mr. Ronnie Palma, and Mr. Adelmar Macolor. Congratulations to Kimberly Padul, YS 8 representative, Azer Pablico, YS 9, and Gia May Magdayao, YS 10, for winning the friendly competitions. 

HOME VISIT 2023 

April 12-21. The family of the learners was visited in their home by Sr. Maria Imelda David, FMA, Ms. Delia Valledor, RSW, Mr. Adelmar Macolor, and Mr. Thomas Macri. On April 12, they went to Barangay Marufinas and Barangay Panggangan, located in the North Part of Puerto Princesa City, near the Underground River or the famous Seven Wonders of Nature in the Philippines. It is a challenging trip going to Brgy. Marufinas and it takes 30 minutes to ride a passenger boat. They crossed three big rivers and mountains before reaching the learners’ residences and past pupils. Their houses were made of light materials. Fishing is the primary source of income for the residents of both Barangays, but when the weather is poor, they have no other income sources except for their backyard gardens. On April 21, the team went to Barangay Bacungan, Sta. Cruz, Maruyugon, Simpucan, San Rafael, at Barangay Macarascas, Peurto Princesa City.

LVF-MALIHAO, NEGROS OCCIDENTAL

PERFORMANCE EVALUATION (CONDUCT DELIBERATION)
 April 04. Sr. Sheila Marie A. Ducot, FMA, Sr. Yvonne Therese L. Jance, FMA, and Sr. Ma. Guia S. Asparen, FMA, together with the faculty and personnel of LVF – Malihao, had their conduct deliberation. The deliberation consolidated the grade of each student of the TVET Training Center in Malihao, Victorias City, based on the performance and attitude each had shown over the entire semester.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS SEMINAR

April 12. The faculty and staff and Sr. Sheila Marie A. Ducot, FMA, participated in the Communication Skills Seminar presented by Mr. Mark Gleen Cidro, Ph.D. Mr. Cidro shared engaging exercises for the students that the teachers might utilize in their lessons. In his discussion, he supplemented and expounded on the two teachings and methods-the Prompting and Probing. “We don’t learn from experience; we learn through reflecting on our experience.”  Mr. Cidro emphasized this throughout the class.

YOUNG ORATORIANS GRADUATION DAY!

After a year of attending the oratory, thirty-eight (38) young Oratorians graduated last April 23, 2023, held at the School Multi-Purpose Hall. Certificates of completion were then given to each young Oratorian. Everyone smiled for the camera while singing along to the group song, and there was a photo opportunity. The student-volunteer president, Carol Fernandez, addressed the graduates with gratitude. In her final remarks, Sr. Guia commended the Oratorians for their dedication and effort spent attending the Sunday oratory classes.

FARM VISITATION

April 25. Three (3) officials from the City Agriculture Office of Victorias City visited the school farm to examine if the seeds they had distributed had taken root and produced fruit. The seeds are okra, tomato, chili, lettuce, and sponge gourd (patola). They had given seeds to the school as part of their program.

FEAST OF LA MADRE

April 26. LVF – Malihao joined in celebrating the World Feast of Gratitude for Mother Chiara Cazzuola, FMA, Superior General of the Salesian Sisters! A celebration of the Holy Eucharist presided by Fr. Jimmy Carmona, SDB, was held at the school’s multi-purpose hall. In the afternoon, Sr. Ma. Guia S. Asparen, FMA, introduced the students to Mother Chiara Cazzuola, FMA. There were also fun and exciting games that everyone enjoyed!

YEAR-END OUTING

April 30. Sr. Ma. Guia S. Asparen, FMA, and eighteen (18) student volunteers (Catechists) had their year-end outing at Balulan Resort, Municipality of Manapla.  In her prayer, Carol Fernandez, Student Volunteer President, thanked God for all their blessings throughout the year, especially for the excellent weather that day. It was a moment of tranquility, peace, and a family-like atmosphere. There was sharing of foods and conversations. Some enjoyed swimming, while others stayed in the nipa hut and relished the crisp sea air.

April 15. The LVF Educating Community (EC) celebrated GRATITUDE DAY with the theme “Isang Pusong Nagpapasalamat na Puno ng Alaala na Hindi Magwawakas!” The LVF EC Community is blessed to be gifted a superior mother and friend from a loving and generous God in the person of Sr. Vic. 
Vicky, an LVF Child Advocate penned a poem for her:

GRATITUDE DAY-PALAWAN

April 26. The parents, past pupils, and benefactors celebrated the gratitude day for Sr. Catherine T. Urgello, FMA. The celebration started with the Holy Mass by Rev. Fr. Danilo Nobis, OSJ, the assistant Parish Priest of San Ezekiel Moreno. The learners had their Thank-you presentation to Sr. Cathy with the other visitors through poetry, acting, singing, and dancing. The parents and past pupils expressed their gratitude to her. We are very blessed for the presence, dedication, generosity, and self-giving of Sr. Catherine T. Urgello, FMA, to our little paradise in Palawan. Sr. Cathy has finished her term as a Community Animator in Palawan and has been transferred to a new community. On the same day, Sr. Catherine T. Urgello, FMA, formally announced that Sr. Rosalia Panganiban, FMA is the new Community Animator of the Laura Vicuña Foundation Inc. – Palawan.

LVF PASCHAL/EASTER ACTIVITIES

PREPARATION FOR PALM SUNDAY

April 1. In preparation for Palm Sunday, the resident learners of LVF-Palawan had fun creating a variety of figures out of palm. At the same time that they shared their personal stories, joyful memories, and unique experiences with their co-learners, the “Ate’s and Kuya’s” taught their fellow students how to succeed. The students acknowledged one another during this time by expressing their gratitude. They are pleased to impart their knowledge and abilities in creating various types of palms. They kindly donated some of their goods to the Palawan staff of the Laura Vicuna Foundation Inc.

HOLY WEEK

April 7. A meaningful Stations of the Cross was led at the center by the Salesian Youth Group (SYG) leaders of Laura Vicuna Foundation Inc.-Palawan. To recall Jesus’ suffering, death, and resurrection, the leaders of each station prepared various items as symbolism relating to the mystery. The entire day was spent silently, including reading the Seven Last Words and praying.

RECOLLECTION

April 02. The LVF Child Protection Clinic Communities with the TVET Trainees, staff, and LVF girls had a recollection as being one in the Lord’s suffering, death, and resurrection in this season of Lent facilitated by Sr. Candy Carmen Balverde, FMA, on April 02, 05 and 08 respectively. Recollection allows us to pause, reflect, refocus, and concentrate on God. Sr. Candy led the participants in a profound reflection and discussion centered on the parable of the prodigal son. At some point in our lives, we were the eldest son who complained, was envious, and desired rewards for remaining and doing well. We desired appreciation and recognition. On the other hand, we may find ourselves denying, at times, that we are like the prodigal son because in our quest for worldly happiness and our desire to explore, we did not realize that we had strayed from the Father’s love and grace. Jesus, similar to the Father in the parable, anticipates our return. He will greet us with a warm embrace and open arms. Everyone can return to Him. Please observe a brief period of silence. Listen. Respect the Lord. We will rise alongside Christ’s resurrection! 

CONFESSION: A SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION

Apr. 08. The Laura Vicuña Foundation Educating Community had a confession at the LVF center with Fr. Favie Faldas, SDB. To make mistakes and sin is human, and man is fallible. The phrase “to err is human, to forgive is divine” reminds us that we need to return to the Lord Jesus Christ through the sacrament of reconciliation. Sam said her heart was no longer heavy and felt at peace after her confession.

REJOICE! THE LORD HAS RISEN! 

April. 08.  Easter is a commemoration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jesus’ resurrection signifies that virtue triumphs over evil, sin, and death. Pope Francis stated, “The resurrection is our greatest source of hope because it opens our lives and the life of the world to God’s eternal future, to complete happiness, and to the certainty that evil, sin, and death can be overcome. The Resurrection of Christ sheds new light on the realities of our daily lives. It is our greatest asset!

EASTER EGG HUNT

April 16. Malihao. The LVF – Malihao student-volunteer catechists conducted the Easter Egg Hunt on the school field. You can tell that the young Oratorians relished the Easter tide game by the smiles on their faces. Everyone was so appreciative to Sr. Ma: Guia S. Asparen, FMA, for allowing them to play this type of game. Before the game began, Sr. Guia had an excellent day talk, and the young orator began searching for eggs concealed in various school fields. Each orator was provided with bread, “bihon,” and beverages following the game. These snacks were donated by Sr. Guia’s family and generous individuals who desired to share the favors they had received from the Lord.

ONLINE CATECHESIS
Sr. Erlinda Soriano, FMA, led the weekly online Catechesis for the LVF Child Protection Clinic Communities. She reiterated the significance of Christ’s Paschal Mystery to the Catholic religion.  There may be hardships, adversity, and suffering in our lives there. We will prevail because of Jesus!

Through the benevolence of numerous individuals and their in-kind donations, the LVF’s SolidaritySerye initiative continues to reach out to members of the community. Building Partnership for the Wellbeing of Our One Earth Community

Earth Day, April 22, 2023

We, the Centers, Child Protection Communities, and Family Members of the Laura Vicuña Foundation, Inc. of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, hereby unite our voices in declaring a climate emergency in response to the growing urgency of addressing the ongoing climate crisis. There is a rapidly closing window to keep global temperature rise to the 1.5°C Paris Agreement target to stop a more catastrophic climate future. We acknowledge the gravity of the situation and the urgent need for an unprecedented collective response.

Together with this declaration, the Laura Vicuña Foundation of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians in Quezon City, Palawan, Victorias City, Negros Occidental, and its 10 Child- Protection Communities call for the protection, development, and empowerment of disadvantaged children, youth, and vulnerable adults. Laura Vicuña Foundation, Inc. of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians is powered by renewable energy thru the installation of solar energy in its centers. We further commit to take immediate and significant actions to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to the deceleration of global warming by: 

• Fortifying our commitment to building a culture of protection for children, youth, and vulnerable adults in our community-based programs, TVET-Centers, and homes/center-based programs for the healing and recovery of abused, exploited, and trafficked children and youth.
• Forming our children, young people, and families towards a new lifestyle and responsible stewardship through ecological education and spirituality.
• Mobilizing more resources for action-oriented climate change education and awareness raising.

These are our organization’s commitments to address the climate emergency and our pursuit of a balanced and healthy ecology for all generations of all species.

Together with our declaration, we strongly remind the Philippine government of its duty to protect the Filipino people and the beautiful land we live in from worse climate catastrophes and ensure a sustainable life for present and future generations.

We, therefore, call on the National Government to:

1. Declare a national state of climate emergency and reflect it in every plan, policy, and program it puts forward.
2. Produce a clear roadmap, secure the requirements, and mobilize government institutions for a rapid, equitable, people-centered, and just transition to a hundred percent (100%) renewable energy by 2040¹ or earlier. Fossil fuel use must peak by no later than 2025, and a planned and managed phaseout of coal, gas, and all other fossil fuels must immediately take place. STOP the funding of fossil fuel expansion NOW!
3. Be the voice of the Filipino people in international bodies to demand a global phaseout of fossil fuels and secure loss and damage reparation and turnover of technology, climate finance, and capacity-building efforts owed by historically polluting nations and corporations.
4. Hear both the cry of the earth and the poor by mainstreaming an integral and holistic approach to climate change adaptation and mitigation 
5. Recognize the rights of nature and enact the Rights of Nature Bill and other Green Bills² to address the current policies and practices that exacerbate climate change impacts.
6. Reduce the impacts of climate change and extreme weather events. Prioritize biodiversity conservation and natural habitat preservation. Prevent further deforestation. Protect coastal integrity and fragile island ecosystems against reclamation, fossil fuel, and other extraction activities.
7. Uphold climate and intergenerational justice by halting profit-driven and ecologically destructive projects. Promote the precautionary principles on proposed projects that will impact the environment and natural resources. Hold climate polluters and enablers accountable.
8. Empower communities to be self-determined for climate change adaptation. Respect and protect the human rights of indigenous peoples, women, youth, children, and all environmental rights defenders.
9. Immediately formulate a response to address sea level rise (SLR) and slow onsets associated with climate impacts, strong weather events, and policies that exacerbate flooding and landslides, and loss of biodiversity.

By declaring a climate emergency, the government must place front and center the necessary climate adaptation and mitigation policies and programs, including the mobilization of resources necessary for the country’s survival.

NOW is the time to act. We have no other choice but to seize this critical decade for action – our last chance to preserve hope for a livable future for future generations. Start the transition now to a renewable-powered, and socially just future. As UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says, “Our World needs climate action on all fronts: everything, everywhere, all at once.”

Brave Sessions

A total of two thousand forty-six (2,046) students were given the Laura Vicuna Foundation’s (LVF’s) I am BRAVE (Buddies Reject Abuse, Violence, and Exploitation) advocacy sessions by Ms. Mercedes A. Juncia on the following dates:  March 7, 2023 (Caneland Oasis Private Academy, Canetown Subd., Victorias City -33); March 8-15 (Colegio de Sta. Ana de Victorias 289); March 22, 2023 (Caduha-an National High School-Luna Ext. -736, Cadiz City); March 28, 2023 (Escalante National High School, Escalante City-390); March 29, 2023 (Floro T. Bongco National High School, Escalante City-327) and on March 30, 2023 (Dr. Vicente F. Gustilo Memorial National High School, Cadiz City-271).  The students committed to doing the following:  Gender Equality, Speak up and Report Cases of Abuse, Violence, Exploitation, and Respect One Another. LVF was still able to continue with their advocacy sessions despite DepEd’s strict compliance with their no disruption of classes policy. The people in charge truly believed in LVF’s program for safeguarding oneself against abuses, violence, and exploitation. Most of the sessions were in partnership with DepEd Cadiz City and DepEd Escalante City.

LVF WOMEN’S MONTH #WEcanbeEquall

March 27. LVF conducted a seminar on Gender Equality and the Magna Carta for Women for the Officials of Brgy. Pinagkaisahan facilitated by Ms. Joy Hugo. In the Philippines, March is widely recognized as Women’s Month, a time to honor and appreciate the significant contributions made by women to society. This month-long celebration aims to raise awareness about women’s struggles for gender equality and their rights. This year, the women’s month celebration has a theme, “WE for Gender Equality and Inclusive Society,” with #WEcanbeEquall. The observance of Women’s Month in the Philippines began in 1988 with Proclamation No. 224, proclaiming the first week of March as Women’s Week. This was later expanded to the entire month to promote women’s empowerment and gender equality (https://mirror.pia.gov.ph/features/2023/03/01/womens-month-highlights-gender-equality-in-an-inclusive-society). 

GIRL-CHILD WEEK CELEBRATIONS

LVF has joined the nation in celebrating the GIRL-CHILD WEEK (March 25-31, 2023) with 50 Child Protection Clinic Communities’ children and young people on March 27, held at LVF Ground Hall and 300 Senior High School students of Colegio de Sta. Ana de Victorias on March 31 via Google Meet on its advocacy session on Online Safety and Responsible Digital Citizenship dubbed as “Click to Cliques: What Comes After Every Click.” The Girl-Child Week is spearheaded by the Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC) under Presidential Proclamation No. 759 series of 1996, declaring every fourth week of March as the “Protection and Gender-Fair Treatment of the Girl Child Week,” which is in line with Women’s Month, the Girl-Child week’s theme is “Strong Girls, Strong World: Protecting Girls’ Rights and Well-being in the Face of Adversity.” Ms. Rosea Monsay conducted this session.

LVF JOINS THE BRAINSTORMING SESSION FOR THE NATIONAL CHILDREN’S MONTH CELEBRATION 

March 18. The Laura Vicuña Foundation, Inc. joined the National Children’s Month-Children Brainstorming Session (NCM-CBS) for the 2023 NCM Celebration. LVF Child representative Shane Yap shared her opinions and ideas on the numerous events that will be carried out. The 2023 NCM will center on children’s nutrition, emphasizing the country’s malnourished children, anchored to the presented data of underweight Filipino children. This was held via Zoom.

WORLD SOCIAL WORK DAY CELEBRATION

March 21. Sr. Marivic Sta. Ana, FMA, led the celebration of World Social Work Day 2023 through prayer. This year’s theme was “Respecting Diversity through Joint Social Action.” The Philippine Association of Social Workers Inc. (PASWI) commemorated, complimented, and acknowledged the contributions of all social workers in the Philippines. At LVF, girls also prepared a brief presentation for the social workers who work at the center. The girls expressed gratitude and appreciation towards the social workers through a song presentation.

RIGHTS OF NATURE!

March 21. Sr. Candy Carmen Balverde, FMA, joined the three-day 2023 General Assembly on the Rights of Nature PH with the theme: Cultivating the path towards the recognition of the rights of nature in the Philippines at Manresa Retreat House, Banawe Quezon City. Laudato Si, the encyclical of Pope Francis’ exhorts all people to protect our shared environment. This is a challenge to us all! What action should we take to uphold nature’s rights?

DRAFT IRR OF RA 11930 NATIONAL CONSULTATION

March 21. The Laura Vicuna Foundation Inc. participated in the National Consultation of Drafting the Implementing Rules and Regulation (IRR) of RA 11930 at the New Coast Hotel, Malate Manila. The RA 11930, known as the “Anti-Online Sexual Abuse or Exploitation of Children (OSAEC) and Anti-Child Sexual Abuse or Exploitation Materials (CSAEM) Act.” is a newly enacted law passed on July 30, 2022. LVF strongly advocates protecting and empowering children, young people, and families. This law seeks to end the horrifying reality in our country, where children are becoming commodities facilitated by their own families.

LVF’s KWENTO NG PAG-ASA: THE POWER OF CIVIL SOCIETY BY CODE NGO 

March 30. LVF joined and shared its Kwento ng Pag-Asa (Story of Hope) during the Caucus of Development NGO Networks (CODE-NGO) virtual launching of the “The Power of Civil Society: Mga Kwento ng Katatagan, Bayanihan, at Pag-asa.” LVF has featured the story of ‘Hope’ and how LVF has instilled in her to dream once more, to be empowered. It is at LVF here she found a home.

PROVINCIAL VISIT 2023 

March 31. Sr. Tita Padron, FMA, the Provincial Animator, had her 3-day visit at LVF. The Sisters, girls, and staff warmly welcomed her to their small, occasionally messy, sometimes chaotic, often noisy, but always loving home! Her encounter with the staff and girls facilitated a personal sharing of experiences and unpacking of bottled feelings and emotions. Sr. Tita expressed her appreciation and thanked the team for their loyalty and dedication to the Foundation. Eds, the LVF child advocate, shared her experience of Sr. Tita’s visit, saying, “It was a fruitful experience, our encounters with her. She is very Encouraging. Sr. Tita challenged us to think of the ways, as a Vicunian, of what we can do to help the center.” Ms. Sam, an LVF teacher, shared that she learned the “value of discernment, listening, speaking, and developing positive relationships with each other.” Sr. Tita’s visit was a spirit-led encounter with the LVF Educating Community.

FEAST OF ST. JOSEPH

March 20. In celebration of the Feast day of St. Joseph as the spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, LVF-Girls cooked spaghetti and distributed it along with bread to the Child Protection Communities of Judge Jimenez, Hillcrest, and Brgy. Culiat in Quezon City. St. Joseph has placed himself at the service of God’s plan of salvation. He cared for the Holy Family that God had entrusted to him. ONLINE TECHNICAL VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING (TVET) FORUM 

On March 7, 2023, Tuesday, more than 100 TVET institutions attended the Online Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Forum. Sr. Candy Carmen Balverde, FMA, and Ms. Felina Narvaez were present as representatives of the Laura Vicuña Foundation TVET Center Q. C. Several topics were discussed, such as UPTRAS Update as of February 2023, Programs due for Migration, Applications for No Training Regulation Programs (NTR), 21^st Century Skills for trainers and List of TVET Institutions with programs due for a compliance audit. The forum was facilitated by Ms. Catherine D. Horaguchi – TESDA Specialist II and Program Registration focal person. At the end of the Forum, TVET institutions could identify their schedule for the Compliance Audit for this year, the Major Requirements for Re-issuance of Certificate of Training Program Registration (CTPR), Requirements for No Training Regulation (NTR) Application and other TESDA Updates. A Registrar’s Orientation was suggested since many TVET Centers were newly accredited.

BASIC ECCLESIAL COMMUNITY AND MISSION PARTNER MEETING

March 26. Sr. Candy Balverde, FMA, joined the Basic Ecclesial Community (BEC) and MISSION PARTNER Meeting organized by the VOCATION MINISTRY of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral. This initial meeting is for the revitalization of the BEC of Barangay Pinagkaisahan. Strategies on how to invite families for BEC were discussed.

LVF-PALAWAN

ENTRE FARM

On March 8-10, the Laura Vicuña Foundation Inc. – Palawan community conducted an Entrepreneurship Farm Training Seminar attended by the coconut farmers from different Brgy; Brgy. Macarascas, Brgy. Buenavista, Brgy. Cabayugan, Brgy. Marufinas, Brgy. Panggangan and Brgy. Langogan. The three learners of LVF, with Organic Agriculture Production NC II (OAP), Joneht Obuyes, Aser Obuyes, and Luke France Bulan, co-facilitated the training seminar with the Staff. In this way, they can build their self-confidence to stand before others to participate and share their knowledge. The co-facilitators appreciated the opportunity to share their knowledge and skills with the coconut farmers.

COMMUNITY OUTING AT PONCE DE LEON RESORT & GARDEN

March 15. The LVF-Palawan community is grateful to Ma’am Eva Ponce de Leon for hosting the LVF Sisters, learners, and staff at the Ponce de Leon Resort and Garden located at Brgy. San Pedro, Puerto Princesa City. Everyone enjoyed the fantastic swimming pool in the warm summer breeze and the delicious food Ma’am Eva’s staff prepared. As an expression of the LVF-Palawan appreciation and gratitude for her kindness and generosity, the learners prepared a “Thank-You” song accompanied by guitar, ukulele, and flute for Ma’am Eva, PASWI Staff.

PARENTS’ FORMATION

March 17. The Community of Laura Vicuña Foundation Inc. – Palawan conducted the first parent formation at multi-Purpose Hall. Sr. Rose Panganiban talked about Protective Behaviors. She discussed “My body Safety, Rights and Responsibilities, and awareness of Good and Bad touch. Ms. Delia Valledor, RSW, facilitated the activity in which participants were instructed to draw their left hands and list the individuals or agencies to assist them. They were all participative and cooperative; some participants shared their drawings and insights on the activity. This was the best moment because the learners and their parents could communicate honestly and openly with each other. ]

PRESENTATION OF THE 5-YEAR PLAN

March 21. Sr. Catherine T. Urgello, FMA, Center Head, facilitated the staff meeting/planning session. The Foundation’s Vision, Mission, and Goals were reviewed. Sr. Catherine gave each department the floor to present their plans for the upcoming school year. Ms. Delia Valledor, RSW, and Sr. Rosalia Panganiban, FMA, first presented the plan of Residential Care for the incoming school year, including the number of vacancies for the incoming YS 8 (newly resident – learners) based on the number of Social Workers with the ratio of 1:20 as well as the incoming activities and the updated Registration and License of the Foundation coming from Cubao-the central office. Second, Ms. Matet Palma and the other farm staff presented their three (3) year development plan to sustain a high-quality farm harvest to provide food for the community and eventually to sell in the market to generate additional income. Sr. Maria Emilda David, FMA, presented the Home Study Program.

EVERYONE HAS FEELINGS

March 27. Ms. Delia Valledor, RSW, and the other staff conducted a group session titled “Everyone has feelings” for the resident – learners. This activity consisted of the following questions; think about when you felt determined, that you felt strong, and that you thought you did everything. And there is somebody who cares for you. Now think of when you felt lonely, disappointed, hurt, jealous, embarrassed, and shy. You might probably be confused, curious, sometimes optimistic, and patient. The goal of this activity is to understand, comprehend, and process the feelings and thoughts of the learners. Each learner was given 5 minutes in silence and then given one sheet of paper to answer the prepared question of the facilitators. They were all focused and serious, but some of them became emotional. Then the participants were encouraged to share and express their emotions. This activity helps young people speak and communicate their feelings and emotions sincerely. 

MALIHAO, NEGROS OCCIDENTAL

SCHOOLS’ DIVISION OF VICTORIAS CITY VISITATION

March 01. The Victorias City Schools Division Office visited the Laura Vicuña Foundation Inc. – Victorias by the Guidelines on School Visits, Inspections, and Monitoring and Evaluation. With the presence of the School Division of Victorias City officials, Ronamie V. Reliquias, Ph.D., Chief Ed. Supervisor, John Paul G. Pecaoco, Planning Officer III, Giovanni Wray A. Estraño, Education Program Specialist II. Regina N. Bonda, Senior Ed. Program Specialist (SMME), Thelma Ortencio, Education Program Specialist II (SMN), and Glaizelle T. Leonoras, Senior Education Program Specialist, validated the school’s compliance with the DepEd mandate and guidelines.

TVI HRS AND GRADE 12 HRS ENCOUNTER WITH SR. LIDO
It was a great privilege and an opportunity for the Grade 12 Hotel Restaurant Services (HRS) and Technical Vocational Institute (TVI) students to learn Japanese and prepare Japanese cuisine! Sr. Lido, FMA, and Ms. Tanabe, a teacher/instructor at a renowned school in Shizuoka, Japan, have shown the school and its students, particularly those in Grade 12 and TVI HRS, taught the students Japanese vocabulary for vegetables through entertaining and engaging games and activities. They led the students to make Onigiri or rice ball- a Japanese food made from white rice formed into triangular or cylindrical shapes. After the encounter, the students thanked Sr. Lido and Ms. Tanebe with a song and a sweet message on the card.

NATIONAL CERTIFICATION ASSESSMENT IN HOUSEKEEPING NC II

March 20-22. Twenty-five (25) BSRS scholars of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority or TESDA took the Housekeeping NC II National Certification Assessment in three batches for three consecutive days from March 20-22, 2023. The assessment was held at Silay Institute (SI)- an assessment center. Of 23 candidates, 21 passed the evaluation and now have a National Certificate (NC) II! Two scholars could not take in the review because they were already employed in Manila. Everyone was so thankful to God now that they were Housekeeping NC II holders.

SCHOOL PROMOTION

The faculty and staff, Sr. Sheila Marie A. Ducot, FMA, and Sr. Ma. Guia S. Asparen, FMA of LFV- Malihao, promotes LVWDTC in different schools in the Municipalities of EB Magalona, Manapla, and the City of Victorias. Armed with brochures and tarpaulins of the schools’ infographics,  they conducted a room-to-room campaign: on March 23 at Manapla National High School – Manapla; on March 24 at Victorias National High School – Gaston Extension and Estado National High School, both located in Victorias City and at Victorias National High School – Canetown Extension and Alfonso Sta. Ana Memorial High School – Cuaycong on March 29; at Victorias National High School – Main Campus, a school in Victorias City with the largest student population; and San Isidro High School – EB Magalona. The school promotion was effectively completed in collaboration with the school Registrar.

GRADE 11 AND TVI LENTEN RECOLLECTION

The Grade 11 and TVI students of Laura Vicuna Foundation – Malihao took time to attend the Lenten Recollection on March 29 and 30 with Sr. Therese Yvonne L. Jance, FMA, at the school’s Multi-Purpose Hall. As a Catholic, Recollection is essential, and it is taking the time for silence, reflection, and discernment. In realizing that some may have wandered away under God’s grace, this Lenten season is the opportunity to return to God’s favor. The students were grateful to God for Sr. Yvonne’s presence, ceaseless effort, and precious life because she instructed them for two days.

“KUMPISALAN NG BAYAN”

The Oratory Youth and Mothers Club Oratorian joined the “Kumpisalan ng Bayan” (Confession in the Village) at Mary Help of Christian Church, Canetown Subdivision, Victorias City. The 30 young mother oratorians and the Student Volunteer Catechist walked for about 20 minutes from Laura Vicuña Foundation Inc. – Victorias to Canetown to participate in the church activities.

LENTEN RECOLLECTION

In this Lenten Season, LVF- Victorias Community and the Salesian Cooperators had their Lenten Recollection at Don Bosco Retreat House, Barangay Granada, Bacolod City. Everyone was so grateful to Fr. Bong Borgueta, SDB, for his guidance in bringing them closer to God. Fr. Bong discussed the Lent first, second, and third Sundays; The Temptation of Jesus, The Transfiguration of Jesus, and Jesus and the Samaritan Woman. Furthermore, he shared the five ways to overcome temptation and encouraged everyone to live out the good things they had heard that day. There was a group sharing where each person was allowed to describe how gracious and merciful God is to them despite life’s challenges and difficulties. Fr. Bong then presided over the Holy Eucharist, which everyone attended.

March 23. In this Lenten Season, LVF- Victorias students had their confession at the School Multi-purpose Hall. The admission began around 9:00 in the morning and ended at almost 10:00 am. After the confession, there was a celebration of the Holy Mass. They were very thankful to Fr. Norman Broderick Segovia, SDB, and Fr. Jimmy Carmona, SDB, for facilitating the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

The LVF weekly Sunday catechesis continues to be life-giving for the Child Protection Clinic Communities, joined by more than 200 participants! Because man cannot survive on bread alone, the community members remain anchored on God’s Word. God must be a part of one’s life, and having God as the cornerstone of one’s existence means nothing is impossible.

The song ‘Pananagutan’ tells us that no one lives independently but sends a message of our responsibility towards our fellowmen. With our love, care, and service to others, we may bring salvation to each other.

PASWI-COP

The Wednesday prayer habit of Social Workers continues to reach out and affect the lives of others through sharing their spiritual journey, how their faith in God has enabled them to overcome obstacles, and how their spirituality has impacted their fieldwork. This event is co-hosted by PASWI Chapters from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao under the leadership of ED Eva Ponce De Leon and Sr. Marivic Sta. Ana, FMA.

FEBRUARY SERENDIPITY SURPRISES

Serendipity Surprises Series. The famous movie Forrest Gump tells us that “Life is a box of chocolate, we do not know what we will get” and that “miracles happen every day” in our lives. This February, LVF has unboxed serendipity surprises! They were an unexpected, delightful turnout of events at LVF Centers, significantly sustaining and impacting the youth and families LVF served.  A wellspring of grateful hearts to God and His mediation overflowed among the LVF Centers’ Educating Communities.

NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER AND AWARENESS AGAINST HUMAN TRAFFICKING

Feb. 05. Sr. Candy Carmen Balverde, FMA, and Edralyn, LVF child advocate, joined the National Day of Prayer and Awareness Against Human Trafficking Journeying in Dignity organized by the CBCP cluster against Human Trafficking conducted at EDSA Shrine. The program discussed how to be in a union to empower the organization against Trafficking. A Child advocate talked about her journey of survival from being trafficked at an early age.  She said she is very thankful to have this kind of organization that helped her survive, and now, she is an advocate against trafficking. Eds’ has this takeaway: “Today, we celebrate the Feast Day of St. Bakhita. She survived kidnapping and enslavement and became the patron saint of victims of human trafficking. We, as young people, can do something significant and impactful. We can be advocates to counter trafficking in persons!”

FOLLOW YOUR DREAM

Feb. 03. The Laura Vicuña Foundation, Inc. conducted the onsite Follow Your Dream (FYD) session for more than 700 Grades 4 to 12 Mary Help of Christians College, Salesian Sisters, Inc. students in Canlubang, Laguna. During the session, student participants shared their answers to the questions of who the person/s they admire the most; the five fingers of their life; their Dream Collage, and their life goals. With candor, one of them shared that she “wanted to become a teacher to help others achieve their dreams as well.”  This youth-led, peer-to-peer session allows young people to share and inspire each other in their language and level.  The LVF child advocates, Staff facilitated the session with Sr. Candy Carmen Balverde, FMA. 

CROSS-CATHOLIC OUTREACH PROJECT OFFICERS VISIT LVF QC

Feb. 01. The Cross Catholic Outreach (CCO), through its Project Officers, Mr. Claudio Merisio and Mr. Kevin Kho, with Ms. Lot Ortiz, conducted a site visit to the LVF Center in Cubao, QC! CCO is LVF’s funder for their Anti-Trafficking Project. An encounter with the Sisters, the staff, the girls, and parent leaders of LVF’s Child Protection Communities ensued. The parent-leaders shared how LVF raised their awareness and empowered them to uphold human rights and promote a culture of protection in their respective communities.

DON BOSCO MONDO GERMANY TRANSFER THEIR ANNUAL GRANT TO SUPPORT LVF QC HOME

Ms. Larissa Wulfert, Project Manager of Don Bosco Mondo, informed Sr. Marivic Sta. Ana, FMA, that the donor has approved their request and has transferred the annual Grant of Don Bosco Mondo, Germany, to the LVF Center of Protection, Healing, and Recovery of Girls in Quezon City.

LVF SAYS ‘YES TO BECOME YEAST’: THE PEC GRATITUDE CELEBRATION

Feb. 18. The LVF Sisters, Staff, and Girls joined the Provincial Educating Community (PEC) Gratitude celebration for Sr. Teresita (Sr. Tita) Padron, FMA, the Mother Provincial of Salesian Sisters of St. John Bosco in the Philippines and Papua New Guinea, with the theme: “Say Yes, Become Yeast.” There was a thanksgiving mass and the giving of the community Manifesto.  Everyone was excited to celebrate one of the important Salesian Community celebrations in person! Face-to-face at last. Various games were prepared, and different communities were mixed to form a team. It is an opportunity to make friends. The crowd roared, and people cheering filled the air as they supported their respective teams during kickball, badminton, basketball, and volleyball competitions! The players played with enthusiasm and excitement. “It was another core memory for us all. Since the pandemic, it has been nice and fun to socialize with other people again. Seeing the smiles on others’ faces after receiving their certificates and medals is heartwarming. Most especially, we were challenged to become yeast to our peers. In what way can we be yeast to our brothers and sisters in God,” said Sab.

UST R.E.A.P PROGRAM 24^TH ANNIVERSARY 

Feb. 18. Sr. Candy Carmen Balverde, FMA, delivered her inspirational message and represented the Laura Vicuna Foundation, Inc. of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians as this year’s recipient of the Missio Awards in the 24th Anniversary of the R.E.A.P (Re-entry Education Agenda for the Poor) Program of the UST Angelicum College was celebrated through the 2023 Gabay Karunungan: The National Conference on Alternative and Transformative Education and the Missio Awards. LVF has been one of the partner communities of the UST Angelicum R.E.A.P. program.

MOA SIGNING BETWEEN LVF AND VETERANS MEMORIAL MEDICAL CENTER

Feb. 08. It’s official! The Laura Vicuna Foundation is now a partner of the Family Medicine Department of Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC), QC, as each party signed the Memorandum of Agreement! LVF Managing Director, Sr. Ma. Victoria P. Sta. Ana, FMA, signed the Memorandum of Agreement with Dr. Kris Bello and Dra Dana Hidalgo. Present during the signing of the MOA are Sr. Candy Carmen Balverde and Sr. Erlinda Soriano, along with the LVF girl residents as witnesses.

CHILDREN’S CONSULTATION ON THE IRR OF RA 11930

Feb. 11-12. LVF joins the 2-Day Children’s Consultation on the Implementing Rules and Regulation (IRR) of Republic Act (RA) 11930 or the Anti-Online Sexual Abuse or Exploitation of Children (OSAEC) & Anti-Child Sexual Abuse or Exploitation Materials (CSAEM) Act. This new law protects children from sexual violence online. RA 11930 was enacted on July 30, 2022.  Shane, an LVF child advocate, led her group in presenting the result of their brainstorming through a role-play/short skit, which the organizers and participants lauded for being artistic and informative. We can only hope that with this law, online sexual exploitation and abuse among children will be minimized and ended. Child Advocates Shane & Jerill represents LVF with Ms. Rosea Marie Monsay, LVF social worker at Crowne Plaza Galleria Manila.

WAY OF THE CROSS 2023

As the season of Lent comes, we recollect and reflect on the life, death, and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ! The LVF Community joined the nation in praying the Way of the Cross, composed of fourteen stations from the Last Supper to the Death of Jesus. We pray for our brothers and sisters in pain and suffering, for the last, the least, and the lost in the community and the people in the peripheries. ‘For God so loved the world, He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.’

PALAWAN
GRATITUDE DAY: CANONICAL VISIT

On February 7, 2023, the Educating Community expressed gratitude to Sr. Teresita Padron, FMA, for her motherly presence, love, and understanding during her Canonical visit to LVF-Palawan. We are blessed and grateful for her presence and pray daily for her intentions and work for the province and the young people. As the fruits of the labor of Sr. Tita, we, the educating community, commit ourselves to work together in solidarity to strengthen our faith, love, compassion, and hope centered on the person of Jesus Christ, who has called each of us to love and serve His people. The learners, staff, and FMA sisters presented a cultural program, dances, and songs expressing gratitude and love to Sr. Tita. 

SHARING ON THE WORD OF GOD

The LVF-Palawan conducts a weekly sharing of the Word of God with the learners, volunteers, staff, and FMA Sisters. It is always a beautiful experience! This sharing has strengthened our relationship, leading to a meaningful and healing experience. God wants everyone to hear His word and be saved, and we have a part in spreading the Good News! This activity is one of the most awaited activities of the learners at the center because it has become their safe place.

TAIZE PRAYER

On valentines night, the whole community had a Taize Prayer – “Date with the Lord.” The Sisters, staff, and learners expressed their love for God and God’s love towards them when they shared their past experiences, how they overcame life trials, and how they managed to love God despite the challenges they encountered.  Valentine’s is a chance to reflect on how we live our life. Do we exhibit the genuine love expected of us by our Creator and Savior, Jesus Christ?

VALENTINE’S DAY CELEBRATION

Valentine’s Day, also known as St. Valentine’s Day (February 14), is when people express their affection towards each other through greetings, gifts, and flowers. It is also a day of love and affection in many countries worldwide. On February 14, 2023, the community uniquely celebrated Valentine’s Day. The sisters and staff prepared a cooking contest for the learners. The learners were divided into three groups, and they were then told to make a dish from Pasta noodles and Water spinach (kangkong). The first group made a dish of pasta soup mixed with coconut milk and tortang kangkong. The second group prepared a dish of chaolong and kangkong sisig. The third group made a carbonara dish and spaghetti with a kangkong smoothie. The sisters and staff were amazed at how fast the learners prepared their meal and how delicious it was. Ultimately, group 3 (carbonara and kangkong smoothie) won.

GRATITUDE DAY 2023

Laura Vicuna Women Development Training Center celebrated Gratitude Day 2023 with the theme “Festival of Thanks” on February 25, 2023. The celebration was intended for Sr. Ma. Guia S. Asparen, FMA, School Directress, to thank her for her motherly care and guidance to the community. The gym was very colorful. The day was full of fun. The event started at 9:30 in the morning with a mass presided over by Fr. Bong Borgueta, SDB, from Murcia, Negros Occidental. Kenneth John C. Cornelio, SYM Coordinator, and Ariane Caballero, a TVI student, were the masters of ceremonies. There was a short play facilitated by the theater and arts group, followed by the dance presentations of each Salesian Youth Group (SYG), Oratorians, and Salesian Cooperators. Each group brought the audience to the different festivals in Negros Occidental. First to present was the sports group in their Kadalag-an Dance of Victorias City. Next to perform was the Liturgy Community as they performed the Ati-Atihan Dance. The group of oratorians showed their talents when they danced the Pinta Flores of San Carlos City. The choir group performed the Tinabu-ay Dance of Murcia. The dance group impressed the audience by performing the Kansilayan Dance of Silay City. The young Salesian Cooperators also expressed gratitude to Sr. Guia as they presented the Sinulog de Kabankalan Dance of Kabankalan City. The last to perform was the Junior Missionary Club (JMC) group in their Masskara Dance of Bacolod City. After the performances, everybody, including the FMA Sisters, support personnel, faculty, and staff, joined in the community dance. All gifts, cards, and flowers were given to Sr. Guia. You can see the joy on her face after watching the performances. In her closing remarks, the program ended as Sr. Guia thanked everybody for their active collaboration, especially Sir Darrenz M. Caberoy, Co-curricular Coordinator. Lunch was then set on the table and shared by the FMA sisters, Salesian Cooperators, faculty, staff, and support personnel in the AVR while the students had their lunch per the Salesian Youth group at the school gym. Everyone was so grateful for the meaningful and joyful gratitude celebration.

SR. TITA’S ENCOUNTER WITH THE STUDENTS

The community welcomed Sr. Teresita “Tita” Padron, FMA, Provincial Superior. Around 3 in the afternoon, she stepped out of the car and immediately met the students who were zealously waiting at the gym. The choir group sang the Marian hymn “Salve Regina.” During the encounter, she mentioned how proud she was of them for their dedication in coming to school despite the adversities they faced every day. She also emphasized the importance of discernment in life as a student. Some voluntarily shared their life story and life realizations too. The students performed a community dance in gratitude for her thoughtfulness and motherly guidance. Before the program ended, chocolate bars were distributed to every student. A special thanks to Anjanette Sendico, LVWDTC student leader, for accepting the role to be the master of the ceremony.

GRATITUDE DAY: NOVENA OF THANKS

The Novena of Thanksgiving is an annual tradition at Laura Vicuna Women Development Training Center (LVWDTC). Each takes time to express deepest gratitude and appreciation to the people who have been part of the Institution, for without them, the institution would not exist. The Novena of Thanksgiving started on the 16^th of February and ended on the 24^th. The school thanked the following people for sharing their valuable time, physical effort, and continuous support to the institution: school benefactors, company partners, past pupils, Salesian cooperators, young and parent oratorians, parents of the students, students of S.Y. 2022-2023, Salesians of Don Bosco, Salesian Educators and the FMA’s. The LVWDTC Educating Community felt incomparable joy for having those people in their lives. As a sign of gratitude, the school offered a special prayer for them, a video presentation, and an electronic card posted on the school’s official Facebook page.

SPORTS FEST (BOSCOLYMPICS)

In celebration of the Feast of Don Bosco, Laura Vicuna Women Development Training Center had its 4-days sports fest known as Boscolympics with a theme, “Run, Jump and Play but Never Sin,” held on February 1-4, 2023. The celebration started with a flag ceremony, a parade, and torch lighting, symbolizing the light of spirit, knowledge, and life. In her welcome address, Sr. Ma. Guia S. Asparen, FMA, reminded everybody of the importance of sportsmanship and not sinning. On the first day, Basketball (boys), Volleyball (girls), Chess, Dama, Table Tennis (solo and doubles), Sungka, and Scrabble were played. The next day, Basketball (girls), Volleyball (boys), 100-meter dash, Baton Relay, Sack Race, and Amazing Race. On the third day, some past pupils also participated in the event. They were given the time to showcase their talents and skills as they joined the Exhibition Games. The last and most awaited game was the Obstacle Course, played in the afternoon. On the last day of the Boscolympics, champions of each game were awarded certificates and food packs by Sr. Ma. Guia S. Asparen, FMA, School Directress, and Sr. Sheila Marie A. Ducot, FMA, Technical Directress, assisted by Mr. Rino N. Barrido, Sports Group Animator. God is so good that the sports fest ended successfully.

FMA TVI’S WORKSHOP “RELEARNING CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT, PROCESS AND EVALUATION”

Mr. Rino N. Barrido, Academic Coordinator, and Ms. Ma. Socorro C. Bayles, DTS Coordinator, together with Sr. Sheila Marie A. Ducot, FMA, Technical Directress, participated in the FMA TVI’S Workshop with the theme “Relearning Curriculum Development, Process, and Evaluation” last February 6-8, 2023, in Mornese Center of Spirituality Pansol, Calamba, Laguna. The 3-day seminar was attended by the representatives of the 5 TVET schools: Pampanga, Malihao, Cebu, Palawan, and Mindoro. The main agenda of the seminar is to discuss the unification of the curriculum of all FMA TVET schools. During the seminar, participants reviewed each school’s syllabus and course outline. Also, they were able to revise the school’s vision, mission, and core values. Lastly, altogether they made the criteria for the school’s ideal graduates. God is good, for without His helping hands, the 3-days seminar would not be possible.

WEEKLY ONLINE CATECHESIS for LVF MANILA & CPC COMMUNITIES

The weekly catechesis, which the Sisters facilitated, is now facilitated by the LVF Lay through Mrs. Mercedes Juncia. She is finishing her Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry this year at St. Vincent School of Theology. The CPC Communities’ commitment to learning and being close to God is seen in their constant participation every Sunday. Every Week, the catechesis reaches up to 200 individuals from various CPC Communities. LVF aspires for Christ-centered and God-fearing communities with political leaders in every political unit to actualize our vision of fostering child-friendly communities that are safe for all. That each person is upholding the rights of one another, becoming a safe place.  

LVF-SOLIDARITY SERYE 

The LVF’s SolidaritySerye endeavors carry on as weekly support to CPC communities from various companies and individuals. The girls bake bread, brownies, and puto, distributed to the communities by Sr. Erlinda Soriano, FMA, with Mr. Ryan Azucena.

PASWI-COP WEDNESDAY HABIT

Every Wednesday, from 8:00-9:15 pm, the Philippine Association of Social Workers’ Inc (PASWI) holds the Circle of Prayer (COP) hosted by Sr. Ma. Victoria P. Sta. Ana, FMA, and PASWI Exec Director Eva Ponce de Leon, co-hosted by a PASWI local chapter.  On Feb. 17, it celebrated its second anniversary of coming and praying together for peace, healing, and sharing of the Word of God or Lectio Divina.  It is the night for Social Workers to STOPOVER WITH THE LORD.

2023 January’s Extra Ordinary

January is derived from the ancient god Janus, a symbol of beginnings and transitions, whose two faces look to the past and future, making it a not-so-ordinary month.  Two faces of January, indeed! Laura Vicuna Foundation (LVF) rejoices at the countless traces of generosity of Christmas spillover for our Solidarity Serye, especially to our Child Protection Communities. LVF welcomes with great optimism the year 2023 with doorways, a fresh start, and the sun’s rising and setting with our unbounded commitment to safeguarding children’s rights and youth empowerment. Likewise, January being the first month of the year is genuinely Salesian Month as LVF celebrates, together, as a center and community-based programs, the feasts of our dear Salesian Saints; Blessed Laura Vicuna, Blessed Louis Variara, Blessed Bronislao Markiewicz, St Francis of Sales and St John Bosco! We at LVF are excited to discover the unfolding of the year 2023.

LVF’s GOODBYE TO the YEAR 2022 & WELCOME PRAYER 2023

While waiting for 2023, the LVF Educating Community spared a moment of silence and prayer to reflect: what are the things you are grateful for, what to let go of, and what do you hope for the new year? Looking back on everything that had happened, 2022 was a year to be thankful for. God’s providence is overflowing. It was also the year we grieved the sudden loss of Sr. Ana Guerrero, a much-loved Sister by the LVF Quezon City Educating Community. Life is fleeting. There will be a time when we’ll become a memory, and we better make a good one by living a purpose-driven life. At LVF, we may have encountered roadblocks, but we were able to rise above these, having Jesus and Mary at our side.

“As the deafening sound of the fireworks lit up the sky to signal the arrival of the new year, our hearts were filled with excitement and hope for the coming year! Knowing He is with and among us, we will bask in our Lord’s glory.” 19-year old Sab exclaimed.

FAMILY DAY CELEBRATION AT LVF

Jan. 15. Warm hugs, teary eyes, and joyful hearts! The family day allows reconnecting: re-energizing, refocusing, and sharing quality time. LVF’s Family Day Celebration is initiated and sponsored by Mr. Precious and Mrs. Alice Andam and has been an LVF-QC tradition for about 10 years. Ma’am Alice shared the challenges she has gone through as the eldest among twelve siblings and how she did her best to support her siblings in going to school until they graduated, migrated to the US, and journeyed towards their success as a family. With her encouraging words, she inspired the families that they too can rise from the situation they are in-through education. It was exciting each time the gates opened and the girls’ family members arrived. As Mae Ann exclaimed, “I was not expecting my family to come. I was very surprised when I saw them. I was so happy that I slept with a smile.”

GETTING DIGITAL: VIDEO AND PHOTO-EDITING WORKSHOP

Jan. 23-24. The Laura Vicuña Foundation, Inc. joins the two-day face-to-face Capacity Training Workshop on Storyboarding and Video Editing spearheaded by the Caucus of Development NGO Networks, Inc. (CODE-NGO). The two-day activity was full of new learnings and fun as the participants took hands-on practice on video/photo editing to convey messages to viewers through multimedia effectively. The training workshop aims to help participants create storyboards/scripts and videos highlighting their organization’s COVID-19 positive response efforts. In March, each Foundation participating in the training will showcase its output via CODE NGO Livestream. Ms. Rosea, LVF social worker, and Hannah Babes, LVF child advocate, represented LVF.

THE NETWORK STAKEHOLDERS CONFERENCE ON HUMAN TRAFFICKING

Sr. Candy Carmen Balverde, FMA, attended the NETWORK STAKEHOLDERS CONFERENCE ON HUMAN TRAFFICKING organized by ARISE, the Frontline of Abolition, at Manresa Retreat House Quezon City last January 13-14,2023. The conference tackled the global and national situation of Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking. The participants also visited a shelter for trafficking survivors. The participants also shared effective practices and opportunities to fight human trafficking. To conclude the conference, workshops among network partners and commitment per organization were done.

Every Wednesday, we continue to have our stop-over with the Lord.  The Philippine Association of Social Workers, Inc., with LVF’s Managing Director, Sr. Ma. Victoria P. Sta. Ana, FMA as coordinator.  She co-hosts the COP with PASWI Executive Director, Mrs. Eva Ponce De Leon who continue to inspire social workers nationwide with the sharing on the Word of God and their story of conversion, rising above the challenges they have experienced and turning to God and serving Him in gladness. Indeed, every Wednesday, Is our ‘Pahinga kasama si Hesus’. (Rest with Jesus)

KAMUSTAHAN

On January 16, 2023, the center Social Worker Ms. Delia Valledor, RSW, conducted “Kamustahan” with the resident – learners. The “kamustahan” started with an opening prayer. Afterward, the learners were divided into two (2) groups, one for the boys and the other for the girls. Everyone participated well in the group discussion and sharing. They shared their Christmas break experiences with families and relatives. Joy, love, and gratefulness can be seen in their eyes while having happy moments with their loved ones.

YES-AHA

On January 27, 2023, the Laura Vicuna Foundaion Inc – Palawan, conducted YES-AHA (Youth Empowerment through Sustainable Agriculture and Health Advocacy) KICK-OFF for this year an Advocacy for the young people to empower and encourage them to agriculture is worth the time for them than SOCMED or the Internet. This (YES-AHA) primarily aims to prevent and manage this generation of children from cybercrime, bullying, etc. Preventing this situation is securing our future. Today’s YES AHA, was spent harvesting rice in the fields. In this activity, we were divided into 4 groups for 4 purposes. 1 is for GAPAS (cutting), two is for TALI (threshing and tying), three is for HAKUT (gathering), and lastly is for IMBAK (hauling). This activity lasted the whole day with joy, excitement, commitment, hard work, and teamwork with an extra struggle and challenge due to the rainy day, but our young people were so blessed and grateful for the blessing they received from our rice field.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS

A surprise birthday party was held at Laura Vicuna Center Palawan. On January 26, a day to celebrate the birthday of all January celebrators, including Sr. Rosalia, Sr. Imelda, and three other learners. The celebration was planned secretly by the community to surprise them! The staff and the learners helped to decorate the multi-purpose hall to become a festive celebration. The siblings of Sr. Mel and Ate Flory Ate Baby were also there to celebrate with us. They were surprised, too, because they saw how the community loved their sister. The community thanked Sr. Mel for her love towards the community. It is the learners’ way of appreciating the Sisters’ presence in their lives. It was a celebration of life.

FIRE SAFETY PREVENTION SEMINAR AND DRILL

The Bureau of Fire Protection conducted a Fire Safety Prevention Seminar and Drill at Laura Vicuna Women Development Training Center (LVWDTC) Community on the 19th of January, 2023. The seminar commenced exactly at 9:00 in the morning at the school gym. It was an excellent opportunity for everybody because, through this activity, their awareness of fire safety will increase, likewise, in case of emergency, they know what to do. The event was successfully given to the school with the active participation of the Victorias City Fire Station team headed by SFO1 Anthony C. Banay, BFP-Victorias City Fire Chief. FO2 Klyn P. Caro led the orientation and the drill with his companion FO1 Jestonie O. Maningo and Joseph Aldrin V. Ledesma, one of the city officials assigned to the station. The team taught the participants the components of fire extinguishers and how to operate them. During the demonstration, students went into their rooms pretending they had classes; as the fire alarm rang, they hurriedly left their seats and went to the gym. FO2 Carosaid in his closing remarks, “There is no other method than to stay calm and follow the emergency procedures.”

TRIDUUM TO BLESSED LAURA VICUNA AND MR. FRANCISCO DIZON SCHOOL VISIT

The Laura Vicuna Women Development Training Center (LVWDTC) had a Triduum to Blessed Laura Vicuna morning of January 26, 2023. Fr. Jimmy Carmona, SDB, was the mass presider, and in his homily, he included the theme “Yes to Holiness.” He encouraged everyone to be good and to be holy. In the afternoon, the community welcomed Mr. Francisco Dizon, a Laura Vicuna Foundation, Inc. Board Member, as he visited the school. Mr. Dizon lives in Manila; he just visited Negros Occidental for business matter. He intentionally traveled from Bacolod to Victorias despite the bad weather to meet the students of Laura Vicuna. Mr. Dizon was not new to the place since he visited LVF school in Victorias, years ago.  The short program started as Sr. Ma. Guia S. Asparen, FMA, introduced Mr. Dizon in front of the students, who were excited to see the man behind the success and stability of the school. He stands in awe as he notices the number of students during the program. He was impressed by their dedication in coming to school despite the difficulties they encountered every day, such as the school’s location, muddy road, and financial instability. Mr. Dizon mentioned during the program that he would do his best to look for people with the heart to help young people. As a gratitude for his thoughtfulness and kindness, the students did a short presentation for him, a community dance that amazed him. Also, the students prepared a thank you card for him, which was read at the end of the program. The program ended with picture taking at almost four in the afternoon.

CELEBRATION OF THE FEAST OF BLESSED LAURA VICUÑA

LVF-QC.On January 22, 2023, the Laura Vicuña Foundation through the LVF Sisters, Staff, Girls, LVF TVET, QC Trainees, and its 10 Child Protection Communities celebrated the Feast of Blessed Laura Vicuña with eight hundred (800) participants who joined the online session. Sr. Marivic Sta. Ana, FMA warmly welcomed the participants to the session.  Ms. Carla Juncia, one of LVF’s Social Workers, facilitated the storytelling about Laura’s life. Laura Vicuña is another holy girl whose life seems a series of tragic events, yet whose hope in the Lord is a miraculous beauty and inspiration. Her father died when she was three, leaving her mother to become a mistress to a wealthy drunkard. Laura grew to see the sin past the veil of financial security he provided for their family, and she deeply desired for her mother to return to a state of grace. She regularly prayed for her mother before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament that she might return to the faith. Again, Sr. Marivic reiterated that abuse among children is real! It is happening. And we have to do our best to fight these abuses and protect the children. Fr. Favie Faldas, SDB, officiated the Holy Mass. In his homily, Fr. Favie reminded the girls to be inspired by Laura Vicuña’s courage to face all the challenges in their life.  Like the help done by the Salesian Sisters, Laura manifested the last years of her life praying to the Lord in front of the Blessed Sacrament for the conversion of her mother. On September 3, 1988, on the Young People’s Mount of the Beatitudes, in the presence of thousands of young people and the year of the 100th anniversary of John Bosco’s death, St. Pope John Paul II beatified Laura Vicuña. St. John Paul proposed her as a model of evangelical courage, to the point of giving one’s life, for the mission of salvation.  

LVF PALAWAN. On January 22, 2023, Sunday, the community of Laura Vicuna Center Palawan celebrated the feast of Blessed Laura Vicuna. The joy of the learners was visible on their faces when they entered the cooking contest. The 38 learners were divided into 3 Groups. They were challenged to make a dish from Taro or “Gabi.” They were tested with what they created as they pulled out every variety of dish. The first group presented “Paksiw na Gabi”. The second group prepared “adobo sa gata” and the last group prepared “ginataang Gabi”. The sisters, staff, and volunteers were pleased by how the learners did creative work. In the afternoon, a few learners participated in a poem contest; the contestants were nervous but did well. After that, every group dramatized the life of Blessed Laura Vicuna. They experienced how hard it was for Laura Vicuna to sacrifice her life for the conversion of her mother. After the program, every learner received a prize; they were happy because they received what they worked for. They thanked Sr. Cathy and the sisters for the wonderful activity.

DON BOSCO CELEBRATIONS AT LVF CENTERS

LVF-QC. The Laura Vicuña Foundation, Inc. has opened the weeklong celebration of the Feast of St. John Bosco. The LVF girls had a friendly cheer dance competition followed by various games: (table games)- games of the general, chess, scrabble, sports-table tennis, badminton, and basketball. These friendly games remind the girls of Don Bosco’s wish for the young: “My children, jump, run, and play! Make all the noise you want, but avoid sin like the plague, and you will surely gain heaven.” LVF also celebrated the Feast of St. John Bosco with the CPC Communities joined by more than seven hundred (700) beneficiaries on January 29 through a narration on DB’s life, his dream at nine, until his becoming a Salesian Priest and how his influence shaped the Salesian accompaniment to this day. In addition, Sr. Marivic Sta. Ana, FMA, in her opening remarks, emphasized that Don Bosco wanted to help the young before something happened to them, thus using the Preventive System. This system is all based on reason, religion, and loving kindness. Because of this, it excludes every violent punishment and tries to do without even mild penalties. The Feast concluded with the Holy Mass and awarding prizes to the winners of the Boscolympics. The Big Heart Volunteer Group sponsored the prizes.  After that, the Sisters, staff, and girls had a fellowship night.

LVF PALAWAN. The Boscolympics is one of the most awaited celebrations, especially for the Salesian community. There were preparations, and everybody was excited for the weeklong friendly matches of various sports and games. On January 28 to 30, the basketball and volleyball championship roared with cheers from the crowd. During the celebration of the holy mass, seven of the learners who are Salesian Youth Group leaders were inducted. They pledged to perform their duties and responsibilities in the service and betterment of the community. They received a cross from Rev. Fr. Jeffrey, OSJ, and Sr. Catherine T. Urgello, FMA. Some may have lost the competition and struggled, but all enjoyed. It was another core memory to the learners, living Don Bosco’s dream for the young to run, jump, shout, and play BUT NEVER SIN. 

LVF MALIHAW. In celebration of the Feast of Don Bosco, the young and parent oratorians had their Boscolympics at the gym on January 29, 2023. A parade was going to the school after the Sunday mass in the Chapel of Binanlutan. The program started with a prayer and a message from Sr. Ma. Guia S. Asparen, FMA, School Directress. She was grateful for the presence and active participation of oratorians. As an energizer, a game called the longest line was played by everybody. Then, games such as shooting the ring, darting the balloons, and bingo were played. They were given four tickets to play the games they wanted and one ticket for snacks. Their smiles show that they enjoyed the event, not only because of the prizes they won but because of the camaraderie and the experience they had that day. After the fun games, snacks (bichon, bread, and juice) were given to every Oratorian, the student volunteers, and Ms. Candy, who was there from the beginning to the end of the program. The event would not be possible without the cooperation of everybody, and thanks to God, nothing bad happened during the whole program.

A HOLLY JOLLY DECEMBER

December is a time to be merry as it is the Birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ! It is the most awaited month for all. It is a time for homecoming, reunions, reconciliation, giving, inventory of one’s life and projects, and sharing one’s blessings. Cold breeze, bright and colorful Christmas lights, tall, ornamented Christmas trees, Christmas carols, gifts, cheerful atmosphere. It is the last month of the year. Indeed, for all of the blessings that we have received for the whole year, we shout out at LVF:

Lord, thank you for the year 2022, which has rendered Laura Vicuna Foundation fruitful. Thank you for providing for all our needs and helping us build safe, B.R.A.V.E., and resilient communities serving 13,549 children, youth, and family members in its different Child Protection Communities and Centers in Metro Manila, Cavite, Palawan, Negros Occidental, and the 7,369 persons who regularly joined the 2022 online Catechesis.

LVF 32nd ANNUAL PARTI-HANG KAY SAYA 2022

PARTI-HAN-which means to impart, to give, or to share. The Laura Vicuna Foundation’s Annual Parti-han celebrated every December, is the most awaited celebration of our Child Protection Clinic Communities (CPC), for this is the day of unboxing the gifts! The LVF sisters, girls, and staff excitedly packed 1,500 gift packs of blankets, spaghetti, hotdogs, kikiam, bacon, popcorn, pillows, choco mucho, milo, milk, and rice. As we hand them their gifts, we are also readying their hearts for the coming of the child Jesus as our theme states, “LVF 32nd Annual Parti-hang Kay Saya: Hatid si Kristo sa Puso ng Bawat Isa!” (LVF 32nd Annual Parti-hang Kay Saya: bringing Christ to Everyone’s Heart!)

Khaye, LVF child advocate who also volunteered to join the gift giving, shared that upon seeing the CPC Truck, people swarmed! “Takbuhan sila nung Makita ang CPC Truck. Masayang tinatanggap ng mga tao ang mga regalo. Sinasabi nila na malaking tulong daw sa kanila.Nagpapasalamat sila sa mga donors at pati na sa kanila Sisters.”  (When they saw the CPC Truck, they ran towards us. They were so happy to receive the gifts and even said the gift packs immensely helped them. They also expressed gratitude and thanks to the donors and the Sisters.) In their Facebook posts, families who received the gift packs say they are thankful for the  Christmas gifts. Mr. Ryan Azucena, social worker, Khaye, volunteer, and Jean Gonzales distributed the giftpacks to the CPC Communities in Marikina, Taguig, Gen. Trias Cavite, Botocan, Culiat, Bacood, Judge Jimenez, Pinagkaisahan, Hillcrest, Sta. Mesa.

ADVOCACY CAMPAIGN TO #ENDOSAEC

As part of the Annual Partihan celebration, Mr. Ryan Azucena talked about Online Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children (OSAEC) to 786 children, youth, and families of LVF CPC Communities. He discussed its nature and its proliferation, underscoring that online abuse is a reality while reiterating that the family and community have vital roles in mitigating and preventing OSAEC victimization.

LVF’s #BRAVE

A total of nine hundred forty-four (944) students were given advocacy sessions on I am BRAVE (Buddies Reject Abuse Violence and Exploitation) by Ms. Carla Juncia on the 3rd of December at Villacin National High School (84); December 5 at Mabini National High School (196), December 6 at Caduhaan National High School (600) and Dr. Vicente Gustilo Memorial National High School (64).

There was an animated discussion on what they would do if they encountered these situations in which the students engaged.  In the end, they committed to sharing what they have learned on their social media account, knowing how to defend themselves so that they will not be abused by others, reporting cases of abuse, and being brave to say no. These sessions are in partnership with DepEd Cadiz City.

CHILD PARTICIPATION AND COMMUNICATION PLAN VALIDATION WORKSHOP

LVF joins the 3-day Validation Cum Capacity Building on the development of the Child Participation Advocacy and Communication Plan Validation Workshop at Twin Lakes Hotel, Tagaytay, December 1-3, 2022. This validation workshop aims to validate the outputs from two previous write-shops on the development of the Child Participation AdvoCom Plan and to capacitate partner agencies and organizations on how to conduct and maintain the child participation advocacy and communication plan. Jerill, LVF Child representative, appreciated the workshop, for her right to participate was acknowledged. “Ang pakikilahok ng mga kabataan sa mga programang katulad nito…kung saan kami ay nakakapagpahayag ng aking opinyon at pananaw sa pagbalangkas ng mga polisiyang may kinalaman sa aming mga kabtaan.” (The participation of young people in programs like this…where we can express our opinion and vision in formulating policies related to us.”) Ms. Rosea Monsay, social worker & LVF child advocate Jerill Nadora represented LVF.

ICCP TURNING OVER OF DONATION CEREMONY TO LVF

Dec. 12. The ISRAEL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE OF THE PHILIPPINES (ICCP), through their fundraising activity, turned over a Php 250,000. Check donation to the Laura Vicuna Foundation, Inc., led by the Ambassador of Israel to the Philippines. Ilan Fluss, wife, Mrs. Gila Fluss; ICCP President Yoray Ofek and Mrs. Bea Ofek; ICCP Directors Ms. Marge Barro, Mr. Itamar Gero, Mr. Idan Segev, Corporate Secretary Jane Lopez, and Treasurer, Mr. Michael Macatangay, who introduced Laura Vicuna Foundation to ICCP. 

Amb. Fluss, his wife, and other ICCP officers warmly interacted with the girls, listening to their stories, praising their performances, and appreciating their handmade crochet and thank you cards. It was an honor to be recognized and brush shoulders with kind-hearted people! Laura Vicuna Foundation is grateful to be the ICCPs beneficiary organization this year. 

PUNO & PUNO LAW CHRISTMAS GIFT GIVING AT LVF

Dec. 15. The Puno & Puno Law Offices celebrate Christmas annually at the Laura Vicuna Foundation with 120 children from Sta. Mesa and Cubao! The kids enthusiastically participated in the games the lawyers and administrative staff had prepared. This celebration has been the Puno & Puno Law Office tradition since the 1990s with the late Justice Ricardo C Puno, Sr., its founder and incorporator and Vice President of LVF.  The Puno staff caroled the children.  As gratitude, the children also performed Christmas songs and dances to the Puno staff! Mr. Eric Puno, LVF Board of Trustees, expressed how happy he was to celebrate Christmas with the kids! Mr & Mrs. Eric Puno and the Partners of the Firm turned over their cash donation to the Foundation.

SOLEMNITY OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY 

Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. (Luke 1:30) Every 8th of December, we celebrate the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Pope Francis says that on this feast, we contemplate our beautiful Immaculate Mother and recognize our truest destiny, our deepest vocation: to be loved, transformed by love, and transformed by the beauty of God.  We look at Her, our Mother, and we let Her look at us because She is our Mother and loves us very much.

RECOLLECTION: PREPARING FOR JESUS’ BIRTH 

Dec. 11. In preparation for the birth of Jesus, Sr. Candy, FMA gave a recollection to a total of seven hundred ninety-one (791) participants of LVF-Child Protection Communities (CPC), LVTC-QC Trainees and LVF-Girls. In her reflection, Hannah put into writing her personal meaning of P.A.S.K.O: Paghihintay sa pagdating ng Aking Panginoon. Saan man ako paparoon bawat Kilos ko’y iaalay sa Panginoon. Oras ay h’wag sasayangin na hindi ka nakagawa ng mabuti sa kapwa. (Waiting for the coming of Jesus, my God. Wherever I am, my action will be offered to Him. Do not waste a time in doing something good to your fellowman.) Bilang isang bata, maisasabuhay ko ang pasko. Sa pang-araw araw kong pamumuhay, laging lumapit sa Panginoon.  (As a child, I can live Christmas. In my everyday life, I always come to God.)

LVF STAFF RECOLLECTION AND CHRISTMAS PARTY

The Laura Vicuña Foundation’s staff had an Advent recollection facilitated by Sr. Candy Carmen Balverde, FMA, on December 22, 2022.  It was an opportunity to prepare the hearts of the staff for the Christmas season. To sum it up, Christmas is a time for being thankful for all the blessings received.  It is optimistic, not asking God to change our situation but letting God transform us for the better.

The Sta. Ana’s Family sponsored a Christmas buffet lunch for the LVF Staff at Four Seasons, where they enjoyed an unlimited and hearty lunch of their choice. In the afternoon, there was a revelation of manitos/manitas with the Educating Community, followed by a simple get-together.

FEELING THE MAGIC AT FIESTA CARNIVAL

Dec. 15. The twenty-five (25) children with their parents and guardians of LVF-Child Protection Communities enjoyed the Mini Fiesta Carnival and Christmas on Display with plenty of various rides and games at the Araneta City. The kids enjoyed the Happy Cars, boat pool, mini trampoline, Jurassic adventure, and many more!   After that, they were given gifts and snacks. “It is heartwarming seeing our children play and be children! We also had fun!” Ms. Cendy said that as she watched her son play. LVF was thankful to the J. Amado Araneta Foundation for giving this fun and memorable Christmas experience to the children and their parents after almost three years of the Pandemic.

LVF CELEBRATES SR. ANA’S GOLDEN BIRTHDAY

Dec 5. In celebration of Sr Ana Guerrero’s 50th birthday (in heaven), LVF-QC EC and Nanay Evelyn, Sr. Ann’s mother, spent a day at the Manila Memorial Park! The girls reminisced their memories of her. They cried, laughed, and offered a prayer and rosary for her eternal repose.

The Philippine Social Worker’s In. (PASWI) takes the spirituality of its members seriously. Every Wednesday is a stop-over with the Lord to pause from the multiplicity of their work and recharge. This December, the Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP) Palawan and PASWI Palawan Chapter co-hosted the COP in preparation for the birth of Jesus. Social workers from Luzon, Visayas join it, and Mindanao via zoom and Facebook live. This Christmas, may the joy and peace be with you throughout the year.

NOVEMBER: NATIONAL CHILDREN’S MONTH

The late Philippine President Benigno Aquino III signed in 2015 Republic Act 10661, making November the official National Children’s Month (NCM) in the Philippines, its origins being the UN World Children’s Month. This 2015 Act encourages Filipinos to know and understand the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). The Philippines signed the UN CRC on Jan. 26, 1990, making it the 109th country to sign the Convention. The Philippine Senate ratified it on Aug. 21, 1990. The 2022 year’s NCM theme is “Kalusugan, Kaisipan at Kapakanan ng Bawat Bata Ating Tutukan”.  It focuses more on the mental health and well-being of children.  This year’s theme is anchored by the World Health Organization’s definition,n, which is a state of complete physical, psychological and social well-being of a person and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.  Mental health is integral to health, while well-being is its positive aspiration.   The silent victims of the pandemic are the children and the youth.

HAPPY NATIONAL CHILDREN’S MONTH CELEBRATION!

For the month of November, a total of two thousand six hundred twenty-one (2,621) youth were given advocacy sessions on I am BRAVE (Buddies Reject Abuse, Violence, and Exploitation) by Ms. Carla Juncia, LVF social worker on the following dates: November 7 and 9 Tiglawigan National High School, Cadiz City (321); November 8 Victorias National High School, Victorias City (221); November 10 Laura Vicuna Women Development and Training Center, Hda. Malihao, Victorias City (150); November 11 Villacin National High School, Cadiz City (117); November 13 Zone 2 residents Cadiz City (40); November 14 4Ps of Brgy. 1 A, Manapla (61); November 15-17 4Ps of Brgy.One1 and Punta Salong, Manapla (327); November 18 Villacin National High School, Cadiz City (123) November 24 – 343 participants (4Ps of Punta Mesa Manapla (250) and Dr. Vicente Gustilo Memorial National High School, Cadiz City (93); November 25 Sped National High School, Cadiz City (109); November 27 Laura Vicuna Women Development and Training Center parents of students and oratorians (133); November 28 Burgos National High School, Cadiz City (60) and November 29 621 participants ( Manapla National High School (500) and Banquerohan National High School, Cadiz City (121). The discussions were very lively and fruitful.  The participants were very interested in what they would do when facing these difficult situations. They were very participative and interacted well with the speaker.  After that, they made several commitments like reporting cases of abuse, especially to the Department of Social Welfare and Development; helping others who needed help; being aware of one’s surroundings and calling for help if needed; do not let others manipulate you to do something terrible; defend oneself; respect one another and distance from others if you think he will harm you.  Most sessions were in partnership with DepEd Cadiz, DepEd Victorias, and MSWDO- Manapla. 

“CLICK TO CLIQUES: WHAT HAPPENS AFTER EVERY CLICK”

Nov. 04. In celebration of National Children’s Month, three hundred eleven (311) college students from Colegio de Sta. Ana de Victorias and 30 scholars of San Antonio Formation & Enhancement Center, Inc. participated in the LVF’s Online Safety & Responsible Digital Citizenship Advocacy coined as “CLICK TO CLIQUES: WHAT HAPPENS AFTER EVERY CLICK” via google meet.  The objectives of this advocacy session are to relate and understand today’s generation’s language and learn how they make, stay connected and form relationships with their peers in cyberspace; Learn how to protect themselves from online abuses; and that they become responsible netizens. The era of digitalization not only brought high-tech gadgets, software, and applications, but it also poses significant harm to users if they lack the knowledge on how to protect his/herself from online attackers and abusers. With this, participants actively shared their strategies for keeping themselves and their kin safe in cyberspace and protecting the younger generation from borderless crimes! Ms. Rosea Monsai, the LVF social worker, facilitated the activity, assisted by Mr. Ryan Azucena & Ms. Mercedes Carla Juncia.

LVF JOINS INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH CONFERENCE ON OSAEC
“BEHIND THE SCREEN”

Nov. 08-09. As digital technology has ushered in significant advances in society, it has also introduced new threats and crimes that prey on vulnerable children. This further advancement is a new form of trafficking known as Online Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children (OSAEC)!  What happens BEHIND THE SCREEN?  It aimed to understand its phenomenon and take action using scientific findings! Various researchers from different disciplines presented their findings on the prevention, protection, and prosecution practices. The LVF online participants were Sr. Candy Carmen Balverde, FMA & Mr. Ryan Azucena, and in-person participants Ms. Josielyn Hugo & Ms. Rosea Monsay at Richmond Hotel, Manila. This conference was organized by World Hope International, Sexual Violence Research Initiative (SVRI), The Salvation Army (TSA), and World Vision International Philippines (WVI) in partnership with De la Salle University- Social Development Research Center (DLSU-SDRC), National Association of Social Work Education Incorporated (NASWEI), and University of the Philippines Junior Social Workers’ Association of the Philippines (UP JSWAP). 

CHILDREN’S CONSULTATION ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE 4^TH NATIONAL PLAN OF ACTION

Nov. 19. The Laura Vicuna Foundation, Inc. (LVF) Children advocates Vicky and Jaz joined in the development of the 4^th National Plan of Action for Children (NPAC), where they were able to share the issues that the children face from their perspective. Some of the issues they raise are poverty, health, and health concerns that the children experience, especially this pandemic and its effect. Jaz even suggested and reiterated the importance of health clinics to attend to the health needs of children, most especially the support in their education. A focus group discussion on the adult companions was also facilitated where there were priority issues (education, child poverty, health, child protection, and on child participation compounded by the COVID-19 Pandemic! Suggestions of actions to counter these issues were to sustain and expand the Alternative Learning System (ALS), employment opportunities, and livelihood programs, to name a few. LVF participates in collaborative efforts toward preventing abuses and protecting human rights, especially children.

GLOBAL MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERACY

Nov. 25. The National Council for Children’s Television (NCCT) conducted the Global Media and Information Literacy at the Laura Vicuna Foundation, Inc. girl residents and its CPC Communities via gmeet. Four hundred fifty five (455) children, youth and parents participated. It is also a commemoration of the 18-day campaign to end Violence Against Women and their Children.

COMMEMORATING THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED, CELEBRATING LIFE

As we remember, our faithful departed every November at LVF; it is also a month to celebrate life! Five of us at the LVF-QC Educating Community celebrated our birthdays.  Sr. Ana Guerrero prepared the Vicunians for a grand November joint birthday celebration on November 2, the birthdate of our Animator, Sr. Marivic.  Other celebrants were Khaye- Nov.1; Sir Ryan- Nov.3; Hannah-Nov. 6 and Ms. Joy- Nov.10. In his homily, Fr. Juvelan Samia, SDB, recounted Sr. Ana’s s love for the young people, her active, creative accompaniment of the young, and her strong influence on the Salesian Youth Movement (SYM). Sr. Ana returned to the Father last Oct. 25, 2022.  Fr. Juvelan admired Sr. Marivic as Laura Vicuna Foundation’s (LVF) managing director. Being a mother and journeying not only with the children at LVF-QC but to hundreds and thousands of young people whom she has touched lives at the CPC Communities. We thank the Lord for the gift of her person to all of us. Sixty years of being awesome. Sixty years of touching lives and giving hope! We always pray for her intentions, good health, and happiness. Sr. Ana Guerrero planned Sr. Vic’s grand birthday celebration. The arrangement and stage decorations were her idea. Indeed, she had the knack for making people feel special and loved because she loved them.

PAST PUPILS’ HOMECOMING

Nov. 19. The Laura Vicuna Foundation’s Annual Homecoming, with the theme: Home: Sarap Balik Balikan! Celebrated every Christ the King is the coming “HOME” of the Past Pupils, Vicunians, after being away for a long time to LVF.  Sr. Candy Carmen Balverde, FMA, and Past Pupils from the different centers of LVF organized this year’s homecoming via Gmeet.  More than 70 Past Pupils walked down memory lane as they reminisced their memories and experiences with their Salesian Formators, educators, and Sisters. Sr.Marivic Sta. Ana, FMA, welcomed the Past Pupils and gave a talk on the Spirituality of Encounter and Reciprocity. Heartwarming testimonies of the values learned and motivation from the Salesian formations that touched their lives and motivated them to change for the better were shared, especially the good daily day talks before starting the class, the SYM activities, and the gentle reminder to visit the Chapel and attend Sunday Masses have allowed them to grow spiritually. They were all grateful and blessed to become part of the LVF family. The gathering was blessed and ended with the anticipated Mass by Father Rex Fortes, C.M.

LVF ONLINE CATECHESIS

The LVF continues to bridge people’s relationship with God every Sunday during the catechesis facilitated by Sr. Candy Carmen Balverde, FMA, joined by the LVF- Child Protection Communities-Judge Jimenez, Hillcrest, Culiat and Vicunians in Provincial House in Sta. Mesa Manila. Sr. Candy reiterated that the “church is not a building, but it is a gathered people. We are the Church.”

LVF SOLIDARITYSERYE

In the name of solidarity, the LVF continued to share its blessings and stayed connected to community members. This effort is possible with the constant support of our donors who donates Bread, All Purpose Flour, and Puto!  This action shows that “everything in the world is connected.”

FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT: LIGHTING THE CANDLE OF HOPE

Nov. 25. The first Sunday of Advent symbolizes Hope with the Prophet’s Candle reminding us that Jesus is coming.  Let us pray: Loving God; we thank You for the Hope You give us. Help us prepare our hearts for the Lord’s coming. Bless our worship, and help us to live a holy and righteous life. We ask this in the name of the One born in Bethlehem, Jesus, our Lord, Amen.
