August 2024 News

LVF’s AWE-GUST MONTH

August can be considered one of the most significant months in Philippine history. There are numerous celebrations, from Filipinos fighting for freedom from their conquerors to celebrating the month-long Buwan ng Wika (Month of Language) in honor of the late Philippine President Manuel L. Quezon, the Father of the National Language, whose birthday falls on August 19. This month, we witnessed LVF making waves globally! Our young people, the FMA-FIL Delegates, had a one-of-a-kind, awe-gust experience at the International Youth Synod in Turin and Colle Don Bosco, Italy. Meanwhile, Sr. Ma. Victoria P. Sta. FMA was in Thailand for the Inter-provincial Conference, and Sr. Sheila Marie Ducot, FMA, was in Malaysia, sharing and learning the best practices of TVET Institutions. This month, we are proud that LVF-empowered Child Advocates have conducted the Trainor’s Training during the Barangay Children’s Association (BCA) Camp in Laguna. Led by our dedicated Child Advocates, this training equipped the participants with valuable skills in conflict management, decision-making, and goal setting. We believe these skills will be instrumental in their future endeavors. These unique experiences and accomplishments made us proud and inspired us to aim higher.

FMA-FIL JOINS THE INTERNATIONAL SALESIAN YOUTH SYNOD IN TURIN AND COLLE DON BOSCO, ITALY

Aug. 11-16. The Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (FMA-FIL) joined the International Salesian Youth Synod in celebration of the Bicentenary of Don Bosco’s Dream at Nine (9) Years of Age with the theme “The Dream that Makes You Dream: A Heart That Turns Wolves Into Lambs” with their delegates Ms. Rosea Marie Monsay and Ms. Felina Narvaez, LVF youth and staff of the Laura Vicuna Foundation, Inc. in Valdocco and Colle Don Bosco, Italy. Three hundred seventy-six (376) youth representatives, lay collaborators, FMAs, and SDBs from ninety-three (93) countries actively participated in this Synod. The first days of the Synod centered on guided tours of significant places in building Don Bosco’s oratory, and it continued to unfold in the serene and historically rich setting of Colle Don Bosco, the birthplace of St. John Bosco and the very place where he had his life-changing dream at the age of nine. The collaborative effort and unity among the young delegates in reading, studying, and reflecting on the Instrumentum Laboris (Working Document), then gathering into small groups of about ten participants to talk, express, and exchange ideas where each shared their dreams for themselves, society, and the Salesian Youth Movement (SYM), is a testament to the strength of the Salesian community. The information gathered on the small circles was presented in the general assembly. The discussions repeatedly emphasized the need for the young to be protagonists in this present time. On the other hand, the SDB and FMA drafted the decalogue and presented it during the general assembly. To walk on the path that Don Bosco once walked on is a goose-bump experience! His life was not grand—scarce even. But his dream persisted and shaped the world with his faith in the Lord, and in Mama Mary, it continues to inspire us after 200 hundred years. Ms. Rosea and Ms. Felina shared their learnings: “Don Bosco’s dream is alive! It still lives on today in us! I hope and pray that no matter what occurs in life, we never give up on our dreams. As long as our dreams are aligned with God’s, they will persevere. They will come true. They are going to endure.” The two added that Synod on Don Bosco’s Dream at Nine inspired them to become positive influences and accompanying presences to their peers. Participating in this Synod is a meaningful milestone for Rosea and Ms. Felina. Most importantly, it is significant for the mission they are currently involved in as social workers and educators at the Laura Vicuna Foundation, Inc. “I am convinced why God put me here —to be available and answer His call.” Ms. Rosea added. The Synod concluded in celebration of Don Bosco’s birthday at midnight on August 16 with the then-Rector Major, now Cardinal Ángel Fernández Artime, SDB.

TRAINOR’S TRAINING: EMPOWERING YOUNG PEOPLE

Aug. 24-26. Seven (7) LVF’s Child advocates spearheaded the Trainor’s Training of Child Rights: Advocates and Facilitators Barangay Children’s Association (BCA) Camp 2024 for three days at Wood Side Farm and Waterparks, Cabuyao, Laguna, at the invitation of Ms. Emy India, Social Worker at CSWD-Office of Sta. Rosa, Laguna. Thirty-six (36) Barangay Children’s Associations (BCA) and eighteen (18) adult mentors actively participated in the sessions. Under Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which states that every child has the right to be heard and consulted in all matters affecting them, this training empowers children as child rights advocates. It aims to create a network of Child Rights Advocates and Facilitators to initiate child-led advocacies in schools and communities in the City of Sta. Rosa. The training was composed of seven (7) sessions: (a) Categories of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, focusing on children’s survival, protection, development, and participation, the core set of life skills; (b) Value Clarification, Building Self-esteem, Problem-Solving/ Decision Making, Critical Thinking, Creative Thinking, and Goal Setting, (c) Online Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children (OSAEC), were discussed by the girls. In conclusion, the participants developed a Communication Plan and Commitment to sustain the advocacy agenda. The program ended successfully, and the LVF girls learned much during the three-day event. According to Jelai, Arriane, Remy, and Jaz, everyone worked together and supported each other. It was also an excellent experience for them, as they were able to train their fellow young people and create an inclusive society where every child has the right to express their opinions, be an agent, and protect their rights.

LVF TRAINING CENTERS JOIN THE STUDY-VISIT IN MALAYSIA AND SINGAPORE

Aug. 26-28. Sr. Sheila, FMA, LVF-Cubao, QC Economer, Sr. Ernielyn F. Deypalan, FMA with Sir Rino N. Barrido-Malihao, and Sr. Rosalia Panganiban, FMA-LVF Macarascas Palawan joined the study visit of the Salesian Sisters of Don Bosco on Best Practices of TVET Institutions in Malaysia where they undertook a series of benchmarking and visited TVET institutions in Malaysia and Singapore focusing on diploma programs. On their first journey, upon arriving at Politeknik Port Dickson (PPD) Malaysia, they were welcomed by the unique musical presentation. Fortunately, they witnessed the innovation expo that day and were amazed by the innovation and invention; their students excel in their fields. They also attended a conference where the school discussed their best practices and programs offered. Later that day, they visited one of the school’s partner industries and explained the beauty of architecture and how they give importance to preserving its culture while going through innovation. On the second day, they continue the journey in Kolej Kemahiran Tinggi MARA Masjid Tanah (KKTM). Like the first school, they also introduced their best practices and offered diploma programs. The participants were fascinated by the opportunities and support the school gives the students and how the government supports the school’s needs, especially in finances. The school also ensures that students gain what they have worked for. Continuing their study visit in Singapore, the two visited the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) College East. They were mesmerized by the vast use of technology in teaching. Singaporeans are enthusiastic people because they use all their means to solve specific problems; for example, in their food, they rely on imports, but now the ITE is developing Horticulture, where they create and nurture their food inside the building. This institution also helps equip students to maintain the country. Their study visit ended at Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP), an institution known for engineering and Information Technology (IT). They were amazed by their facilities, which have many inventions that could help make daily life easier. Also, the government supports the school, which secures its financial needs. In this way, the school can upgrade its equipment to suit the students’ future skills. Sr. Sheila, Sr. Ernielyn, Sr. Rose, and Sir Rino recognized that the study visits significantly contributed to their learning and look forward to implementing these insights in their institutions. Last August 26 to September 1, 2024, the academic program of the TVET institution in Malaysia for the Don Bosco Salesian Sisters at Politeknik Port Dickson, in collaboration with the industry partner at Anjung Klana, Batu 4 (an architecture industry), involved seven TVET schools: LVF-Cubao, Palawan, Malhao, MHCCS-Canlubang, MHCS-Mindoro, MOTW-Cebu, Pampanga, and MHC-East Boroka, Papua New Guinea. July 2024 News

THE LIGHT OF JULY

July, the month after midyear, is a month for recharging, renewal, and preparation to follow the light as LVF continues the journey to achieve the vision and mission for the year. In this sacred time, we are reminded to listen to the whispers of our souls and follow the path that brings us closer to our purpose, especially with the schedule of set activities such as the Salesian Youth Movement CIAO Camp, Counter Trafficking and LVF #iamBRAVE Movement.

July brought some beautiful surprises, with LVF being chosen as the Investment House Association of the Philippines (IHAP) charity, a recognition of the great work LVF does for disadvantaged children and youth and the community’s incredible support.

LVF played a pivotal role in disaster response during the super typhoon Carina, which wreaked havoc in many areas of the country. This is a testament to the significant and impactful work LVF is doing in the community, a reason for all of us to feel relevant and reassured.

It is the season of harvest and plenty as the earth peaks. This natural cycle reflects the human experience, as individuals and entities like LVF frequently evaluate their accomplishments and establish new objectives for the upcoming months.

LVF @SYM CIAO CAMP 2024

July 29-Aug. 02. The FMA Philippine province hosted the SYM CIAO (Conferenza Interispettoriale Asia Orientale) Youth Camp held in Mornese Center of Spirituality in Pansol Laguna. Two hundred seventy campers from nine (9) countries participated in this Asian celebration for the Bicentenary of the Dream at Nine of Don Bosco.  #SYMCIAOCAMP 2024 theme is YOUNG DREAMERS: EMPOWERING DREAMS FOR A JUST AND SUSTAINABLE WORLD. The camp’s theme highlights the role of young people’s dreams and how they shape their lives, affecting the family, the community, and the country to which they belong. It is a message of hope and optimism for the future from which we can all take inspiration. It was an excellent opportunity for LVF Centers in Sta. Mesa, Quezon City, Palawan, Negros Occidental: Christopher Angelo Legaspi; Remelyn Olediana and Samantha Villa; Mary Joelyn Arellano; Sir Kenneth John P. Cornelio, SYM Animator; and Ria May Ramores, a Senior High School student, respectively. FMA Sisters working for LVF centers with their lay mission partners also formed part of the working team. The six (6) youths participated with joy and optimism in the meaningful activities of the said camp, where they got the chance to meet new friends, culture exchange, and participate in the Plenary Talks and five campsite sessions:  ‘Don Bosco’s Dream and Youth Leadership’ with Fr. Eli Cruz, SDB, Dream Sessions in different modalities;  sessions on the Laudato Si at the SVD Seminary, commitment building; witness the awe-inspiring Taal Volcano, and the Barrio Fiesta festival night.

Mary Jojelene Arellano said, “…the camp felt like I was at home… One of the things I learned at that camp is to dream with dedication… and trust in yourself because you cannot achieve your dream if you do not believe in yourself. Also, one of the things that stuck in my mind was the phrase, ‘Dreams help us prepare for our future.’ So, as a young person, I will fulfill my dream for my future and the world. Thank you very much.”

Sr. Teresita Padron, FMA-Philippine Provincial, stressed the importance of the Dream of Don Bosco as a milestone of the Salesian charism and recalled that the encounter also wants to be a concrete response to Pope Francis’s appeal to take care of and safeguard the planet.

The contagious, joyful, and youthful presence of Sr. Runita Borja, FMA, General Counselor for Youth Ministry, graced the celebration Sr. Ena Bolanos, FMA, Councillor for Administration, also gave the campers a good night.

Sr. Ma. Victoria P. Sta. Ana, the Youth Ministry Coordinator, and LVF Managing Director emphasized to the young people that God’s ultimate dream is for them to be happy. She also acknowledged and thanked all the working teams behind the success of the 5-day CIAO camp.

LVF #EndHumanTrafficking ADVOCACY CAMPAIGN

Laura Vicuña Foundation joins the 10th World Day Against Trafficking in Persons with the theme “Leave no child behind in the fight against human trafficking.” The LVF social workers, Ms. Josielyn Hugo & Ms. Angie Villaren, conducted a session in our CPC areas, Hillcrest, Judge Jiminez, and Pinagkaisahan, to raise awareness and strengthen the protection of children and adults from Human Trafficking.

LVF AND ISRAEL BOND: BRIDGING CULTURAL AND RELIGIOUS DIFFERENCES

Israel and LVF are partners. They communicated first-hand during their visits and encounters between the two communities. While our beliefs and practices have been significantly different, there are also points of convergence and shared values. Our love for the LVF girls bridged the two; as Ambassador Ilan Fluss said, “LVF has an extraordinary place in our hearts.” Rabbanit Elisheva Goldschmidt, the wife of the Rabbi of the Jewish Association of the Philippines, has an exceptional love and fondness for the LVF girls. She visits them at the center every month, sharing her talents and teaching them singing techniques. Shortly before their family was transferred to another country, she sponsored a song recording of the girls. The LVF kids hold her very dear, as a mother, to their hearts.

IHAP SUPPORT LVF PROGRAM FOR CHILD PROTECTION AND EMPOWERMENT

July 13. The Investment House Association of the Philippines (IHAP) has chosen LVF as its beneficiary! The girls from our Center-based program and community performed a dance and song number during the donation turnover. IHAP promotes better understanding of the role and functions of investment houses and to enhance their contribution to the growth of Philippine business and the economy mainly through the development of the capital market. LVF Board of Directors Mr. Francisco Dizon was one of IHAP’s former presidents (1987-1988).

TRAINING ON CASE MANAGEMENT

July 15-19. LVF Social Worker representative Ms. Jessa Mae Nardo attended the five-day (5) comprehensive Training on Social Work Case Management to LGUs: Enhancing Working with Individuals at Sequoia Hotel, Quezon City, conducted and organized by DSWD Academy. The training was designed to improve the competencies of Social Workers practitioners from various Local Government Units and the Centers/Residential Care Facilities of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), which serves as the frontline of social work case management.Throughout the training period, social workers received lectures and workshops to equip them with the skills and knowledge necessary to manage cases for their clients. The DSWD Academy also allows the Social worker participants to benchmark the two centers, the Residential and Study Center for Children (RSCC) and Golden Reception and Action Center for Elderly and Other Special Cases (GRACES), to see the actual process of case management. At the end of the training, ASEC Janet P. Armas, Standard and Capacity Building Group, told her closing message: “Treasure, not in gold, but in knowledge.” The training ended with 35 trainees from different LGUs and NGOs across the Philippines receiving certificates of appreciation.

LVF DISASTER RESPONSE

July 24. With the devastation of Typhoon Carina, many of our Child Protection Communities were in evacuation centers. We at LVF prepared and distributed hot soup to our CPC communities, which were significantly affected by the typhoon.

LVF IS FLU-VAXXED

July 05. Thank you, Dra. MJ Torres, owner and Medical Director of the Zen Institute, for the thirty-three (33) flu vaccine jabs to the Sisters, Girls, and Staff.

‘JUVENIS’ JUNE

‘Juvenis’ young June is a midpoint reflection of Laura Vicuna Foundation’s mission for the young. It mirrors flourishing mission even if the year is half gone.It brings beauty in all forms, from flowers to sunlight. Some interpretation of the origins of “June” says that the name came from the Latin juvenis, which means “young people.” Indeed, at LVF, Bata ang Bida! (The Child is the Star!). Our TVET Centers’ unwavering commitment to providing high-quality education enables us to place and deploy poor trainees to LVF TVET’s various prestigious partner companies, provide career prospects for our young people, and potentially improve their family situations. Additionally, we are proud of the UST Angelicum pupils for their YS 11 Completion and laud our LVF Palawan Alternative Learning System (ALS) graduates!

This month, we celebrate the Philippine 126th Independence Day (June 12) with the theme “Kalayaan. Kinabukasan. Kasaysayan,” (Freedom. Future. History.)

In collaboration with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the National Council on Children’s Television (NCCT), the LVF Community actively participates in several environmental initiatives to slow global warming.

We continue to reach schools and communities with our LVF #FollowYourDream sessions. We commend Jeril for her active participation and well-representation of LVF during the 8th Philippine National Children’s Conference. The girls continue to make crocheted bags, headbands, keychains, bonnets, toys, and more!

This month is a vibrant interweaving thread of nature’s bounty, human achievement, and the simple joy of being alive and free.

LVF #FOLLOWYOURDREAMS
June 5. Every child has a unique dream that reflects their passions, talents, and hopes for the future. As advocates, we are responsible for nurturing these dreams and providing the support they need to pursue them. Encouragement is crucial; children should be told that no dream is too big and no aspiration is out of reach. We can help children understand that their dreams are achievable and worth pursuing by fostering an environment that values creativity and ambition. At the Laura Vicuña Foundation, we believe in the power of dreams and are dedicated to guiding children towards realizing their full potential.

The Laura Vicuña Foundation Inc. gives sessions and activities in Brgy. Hall of Brgy. Pinagkaisahan, Cubao Quezon City, with about 50 children who attended the session, was designed to help children explore their interests and develop the skills to follow their dreams. Our four children advocate for Laura Vicuña Foundation Inc. They connect children with role models who provide guidance, support, and inspiration, showing them that their dreams are attainable with hard work and perseverance. One of the social workers, Ms. Angie, shares her inspiring story with the children, recounting her journey from a challenging childhood to achieving her dream of helping others as a social worker. Her story is a powerful example of what resilience and determination can achieve.

Celebrating every achievement, no matter how small, can boost a child’s confidence and reinforce the value of hard work. Acknowledging their efforts and progress shows them that their dreams are valid and their hard work is recognized. As a community, we must create a supportive network that champions the dreams of our children, ensuring they have the tools and encouragement needed to turn their visions into reality—the Laura Vicuña Foundation, in partnership with the local government of Brgy. Pinagkaisahan is committed to providing this support, helping children achieve their personal goals, and contributing to a brighter, more innovative future for everyone.

The REAP program of UST Angelicum College, in partnership with the Laura Vicuña Foundation, aims to provide quality education and holistic development for children in need. It caters to poor children, youth, and even adults. Over the years, the program has been instrumental in fostering a nurturing environment where students can thrive academically and spiritually. The two graduates’ journey through YS11 Junior High School was marked by numerous challenges. LVF JOINS THE 8TH PHILIPPINE NATIONAL CHILDREN’S CONFERENCE

June 19-22. The Laura Vicuña Foundation, Inc. (LVF) joined the 8th Philippine National Children’s Conference the theme “Kasangga ang kaBATAan, Kwento mo’y Papakinggan at Aaksyunan” held at Ardenhills Suites, Quezon City chaired by the Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC), Unicef, and Consuelo Zobel Alger Foundation. LVF was represented by its two (2) child advocates, Jerill Nadora and Christian Malparta, coming from the residential care and community-based program (the LVF Child Protection Clinic), respectively, with Ms. Angie Mae Villaren, LVF Social Worker, as their adult support.

The conference is composed of child representatives, advocates, and youth leaders coming from different regions in the Philippines; religions and races gathered in a national discussion about children’s rights and child-related issues and develop or formulate possible solutions.

The child participants were given eight (8) sessions: 1) Kuwentong Karapatan: UNCRC and Meaningful Child Participation, 2) Kuwento ng Batang Pilipino: A Situation and Problem-Idetification Workshop, 3) Kuwento ng Batang Pilipino: The Situation of Filipino Children, 4) Isyung Pangkabataan- Child Protection, 5) Isyung Pangkabataan- Climate Change, 6) Mga Kuwentong Pagtutuunan: Prioritization Workshop, 7) Ang Pangarap Naming Kuwento- A Visioning Workshop, 8) The National Plan of Action for Children, and Recommendation-Setting Workshop.

Jerill, LVF Child Representative, was nominated among the child participants in the nomination for child representatives for the ASEAN Children’s Forum (ACF), though she did not win, she eloquently shared, during their campaign hour, her active involvement in LVF’s advocacy and empowerment sessions such as #FollowYourDream, #iamBRAVE (Buddied Reject Abuse, Violence, and Exploitation) which is an opportunity for her too to call for an action among her fellow young people, that they too, are capable of protecting and being agents of protection among their peers, and communities, to become an honest Christian and upright Filipino citizens.

The three-day event included a Cultural and Solidarity Night. It is a night where participants showcased the culture of their respective provinces, cities, and organizations to which they belong. “The children were delighted and enjoyed the event with their co-participants. It was great to see the scene where children from different religions and races are united. This event is a great opportunity for child participants since it is one of the events where they can voice their opinions and problems,” said Ms. Villaren.

According to LVF child representatives, they are happy. They learned a lot from the sessions, and they were happy to contribute by recommending preventive solutions to various issues concerning the children. The social worker asked them what their realizations are, and they said that, “Madami pa rin talaga problema sa society natin ngayon na hindi na so-solusyunan”, “Na realize ko na hindi ka talaga naiiba sa ibang tao kasi bilang bata meron tayo iba’t-ibang pinagdadaanan tapos parang iniisip natin kung pano siya ma solusyunan at kung sino yung mga tao na dapat tutulong”.

There are still many problems in our society today that remain unaddressed and unsolved… I realized that you are not really different from other people, especially children, because as children, we go through different things and then seem to think about how to solve them and who should help.

The 8th Philippine National Children’s Conference was a successful event. In conclusion, the children drafted a Manifesto on the issues and problems of Survival, Development, Participation, Protection, and Governance, and their recommendations on Tahanan, Edukasyon, Komunidad, Media/Cyberspace, at Gobyerno in front of stakeholders and followed by stakeholder’s response.

This year’s children’s conference is honestly a partnership with children on hearing their voices to provide solutions and interventions for them.

A CELEBRATION OF LOVE: THE FEAST OF THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS

June 07. The Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a day dedicated to reflecting on Christ’s boundless love for humanity. It is not merely a commemoration; it’s a vibrant expression of gratitude and a call to reciprocate that love. Devotion to the Sacred Heart arose from the visions of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, who received messages from Jesus emphasizing his profound love for humanity, often depicted as a flaming heart surrounded by thorns. The date of the Feast is significant as it falls on the Friday after Corpus Christi (the Body of Christ), highlighting the connection between Christ’s physical presence in the Eucharist and the boundless love symbolized by the Sacred Heart. At LVF, it was a day of prayer, reflection, and renewed devotion. The Sisters, girls, and staff offered a special rosary to the Sacred Heart and observed a moment of silence in front of the tabernacle.

TREE-PLANTING IN PARTNERSHIP WITH NCCT & DENR

June 21. The National Council for Children’s Television (NCCT) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) partnered with the Laura Vicuña Foundation, Inc., to plant trees at the La Mesa Dam, Quezon City. This activity aimed to address the current climate change issues. It is crucial to involve children in various efforts and activities to protect the environment, for they will be the generation that suffers from global environmental issues if we do not act now. Planting trees is not just a beautification effort but a crucial act of environmental stewardship with far-reaching benefits. From combating climate change to fostering biodiversity and improving human health, tree planting is a simple yet powerful tool for a healthier planet. Trees provide vital habitat for countless species of animals. They offer food, shelter, and breeding grounds, ensuring a thriving biodiversity that is essential for a balanced environment. Furthermore, healthy forests play a crucial role in regulating water cycles and preventing floods.

THE HEALING POWER OF ART: A BALM FOR THE SOUL

Beyond art’s aesthetic appeal, it possesses a remarkable capacity to heal and mend. For those grappling with physical or emotional trauma, art provides a safe space for processing difficult experiences. The act of creation allows individuals to externalize their pain, anxieties, and fears. Putting pen to paper or brush to canvas allows them to confront these emotions in a controlled and cathartic manner. Art also fosters self-discovery and growth. The girls discovered they could make something beautiful from just a ball of thread, a bracelet out of beads as they made crocheted bucket hats, stuffed toys, clothes, headbands, bags, and more! They discover new facets of themselves, their capabilities, and their capacity for expression. This empowers them to reclaim control over their lives and navigate the challenges of recovery with newfound confidence.

LVF WEEKLY ACTIVITIES

LVF ONSITE CATECHESIS
In a world of distractions, catechesis offers a vital foundation, fostering a deeper understanding and a more meaningful connection with people’s faith. The LVF weekly catechesis is facilitated by Sr. Sarah Grace Robas, FMA, Sr. Phebe Lacse, FMA, lay mission partners, LVF Social Workers Ms. Joy Hugo, and Ms. Angie Mae Villaren. Through this weekly catechesis, the participants gain a rich understanding of their faith’s core principles. This knowledge equips them to integrate their faith into their daily lives.

LVF SOLIDARITYSERYE

The LVF SolidaritySerye thrives on the “Bayanihan” principle — a Filipino tradition of communal cooperation and mutual assistance. By working with donors and stakeholders, we continue to reach communities that need our assistance. Our SolidaritySerye efforts extend their reach through various forms of action: advocacy, empowerment, spiritual formation, and supplemental feeding. Our Child Protection Community (CPC) kids were happy to receive toys, school supplies, and bread! Thank you, Breadtalk, Purple Oven, and RFM Corporation, for the bread, and Zoi’s Meatown for the bacon!

PASWI-COP

The Philippine Association of Social Workers Inc. (PASWI) holds the weekly Circle of Prayer (COP), a prayer habit for Social Workers all over the Philippines. This prayer habit became a form of communal connection and spiritual sustenance among social workers. The circle itself holds symbolic significance. It represents unity, equality, and the interconnectedness of all. The act of praying together offers a multitude of benefits. Knowing that one’s burdens are shared by a supportive group provides comfort and solace in times of difficulty. Sharing prayers can also amplify the power of individual prayers, creating a sense of collective faith and hope. The COP has become a source of strength and inspiration. Hearing others’ prayers broadens one’s perspective, fosters empathy, and encourages compassion. Witnessing the faith and resilience of others can ignite hope and motivate individuals to overcome challenges. Various PASWI Chapters co-hosted this prayer session led by Sr. Ma. Victoria P. Sta. Ana, FMA, and Dir. Eva Ponce de Leon.

May 2024 News

LVF’s AMAYZING MONTH

May is the fifth month of the year and is associated with joy and rebirth. It is painted with vibrant hues of blooming flowers, especially this Flores de Mayo (Flowers of May) and warmer days. Some define the month of May as ‘going or moving.’ As we move forward and remain at the forefront of child safety and prevention from violence, abuse, exploitation, and trafficking, LVF corresponds with the meaning and symbolism of this month.

It is a month of finding new paths; LVF Vice Pres., Mr. Francisco Dizon & LVF Trustee, Mrs Vicky Cuisia opening doors to LVF Malihao to the BPO world; it is a celebration of the Feast of Mary Help of Christians, the announcements of the assignments of the Sisters, the successful medical mission conducted in collaboration with Veterans Memorial Hospital, the graduation of our two scholars, the commencement exercises of Malihao Senior High School, which were honored by the presence of the Israeli Ambassador to the Philippines, and the completion of OAP. These achievements are a testament to our dedication and inspire us to strive for more.

How aMAYzing it is to embark on a journey of self-discovery and growth, to anticipate new experiences, and to witness God’s blessings in all their richness. Our hearts are filled with gratitude for the opportunity to move forward, and we hope this journey continues to inspire and motivate each of us.

At LVF, we are dedicated and passionate about inspiring others to dream, learn, do, and become more. This unwavering commitment is at the heart of our mission and values, and it is your support and involvement that drives us to make a profound and lasting impact. This month, we are happy to share one of LVF’s success stories.

KIKO: LVF PALAWAN SUCCESS STORY

Francisco Gabua, also known as “Kiko” Custodio, is the youngest child of Melchor and Elizabeth Gabua, who are farmers in Barangay Bagong Sikat, Puerto Princesa City, Palawan. His father is currently our agricultural consultant, having earlier spearheaded the Organic Farming effort at the Laura Vicuña Foundation in Palawan.

Kiko completed his elementary and secondary education at UST Angelicum College through the REAP PROGRAM (Re-entry Education Agenda for the Poor), a branch of the UST Angelicum Home Study Program run by the Salesian Sisters of St. John Bosco and based on the Laura Vicuña Foundation’s Palawan location. He got his bachelor’s degree in agriculture at Western Philippines University and passed the Licensure Examination for Agriculturists.

Bishop Broderick Pabillo provided Kiko with a scholarship that allowed him to finish his studies. After graduation, he lived and worked with the children at the Laura Vicuña Foundation, Inc. Palawan, for two years, acting as the boys’ assistant and assistant farm manager.

He was one of the Organic Agriculture Production NCII trainers under the TESDA and ATI of the Laura Vicuña Foundation Inc. The values of the religious community he lived with always guided him, contributing to his growth and making him the person he is today—all thanks to the FMA sisters for molding him into a good fruit of the Salesian Family. Seeking to further his knowledge and experience, Kiko spent a year in Israel, participating in the Agrostudies Program.

With this opportunity, he increased his level of agricultural knowledge. Kiko is starting a new adventure in the US as an agriculturist. Although farming was not his first dream, it has shaped who he is now. Kiko understands that looking ahead might occasionally cause one to lose sight of opportunities in the here and now.

CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR GRADUATION, JAZ & EM

May 30. LVF Scholars Ms. Jazlyn Narvadez & Ms. Desiree Ligutan graduated from Senior High School at Colegio de Sta—Ana de Victorias under the Humanities and Social Sciences Strand. For our two scholars, this marks a significant turning point. Following years of acclimating to blended learning, particularly during the pandemic, their diligence eventually paid off. Reaching yet another important life milestone.

“I never thought I could accomplish my education, given the challenges I faced and the pandemic. But mostly, I am grateful for LVF, especially Sr. Marivic, FMA, for being the wind beneath my wings. And above all, to the Lord God for sustaining me, us every day.” she said.

LAURA VICUNA FOUNDATION & VETERANS MEMORIAL MEDICAL HOSPITAL JOINT MEDICAL MISSION

May 12. More than one hundred twenty (120) children, adults, and elderly benefited from the Laura Vicuna Foundation (LVF) and Veterans Memorial Medical Hospital (VMMH) joint Medical Mission to LVF’s Child Protection Community in Brgy. Hillcrest, QC! They were provided with free consultations, prescriptions, medicines, and vitamins.

Before the activity, LVF Social workers Ms. Joy, Ms. Patricia, Ms. Angie, and Sr. Phebe Lacse, FMA, made a courtesy call to the barangay captain and officials to plan and prepare the needed logistics.

The Medical Mission came at a perfect time because most kids had terrible colds, coughs, and other respiratory ailments. Conversely, older people often have not seen a doctor in a long time. The volunteer doctors and nurses have provided essential care within the community of Brgy. Hillcrest.

After completing their consultation, the recipients thanked the doctors, LVF, and its staff for reaching out to their community and expressed their satisfaction with the free vitamins and medications.

The Medical Mission was a success because of the collaboration of LVF, VMMH, and Brgy. Hillcrest. LVF is a partner community of the Veterans Memorial Medical Center-Family Medicine Department.

She said, “Indeed, our celebration of Gratitude Day is a testament to the power of community centered on God, and here, we can see the impact of continuing the Salesian Tradition. It strengthened our bond and renewed our commitment to the values guiding us daily.” Indeed, at LVF, we inhale gratitude and exhale love. The celebration of the annual Gratitude Day is a Salesian Tradition in which the community members prepare programs and food and treat the Animator to a feast to express their heartfelt thanks and appreciation for all that she has done in the community and for the young people!

The day was lively and full of laughter with their gift-giving, unfreezers, and short program for the children and their mothers. The day began with a prayerful journey as the group recited the Holy Rosary while traveling to the location. April 2024 News

LVF’S APREAL REELS

At LVF, reel goes beyond Facebook reels which help you build an audience by reaching those who follow you and extending your reach even to those not yet connected to you. A way for people to connect with other people and organizations in their life, to be entertained and informed and allow you to engage your audience through reactions and comments. APREAL Reels is our theme for this LVF April month’s issue. It means for LVF, a series of continuous real moments, events, activities conducted with and for the young people especially with the ongoing LVF went on a Roadtrip to Negros Occidental highlighting its #FollowYourDreams advocacies on the bicentenary celebration of Don Bosco’s dream of nine (9)!  The #FollowYourDreams sessions opened a culture of encounter, listening, and sharing among LVF youth leaders and their peers on the future they want to build. We are wrapped in a series of awe-mazing events with the interaction of our LVF-QC youth leaders to 1,845 children and youth of Negros Occidental, the Easter Season, and the rare occurrence of the total solar eclipse! Yes, a total solar eclipse visible to the naked eye! Did you know that in Philippine mythology, a “bakunawa” (sea serpent) consumed the sun after being attracted to it. Eclipses remind us that we are part of something bigger, that we are connected with something vast.

WORKSHOP FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE PHILIPPINES PROGRAM AGAINST CHILD LABOR COMMUNICATION PLAN
April 3-5. Meanwhile, LVF is represented by Social Worker Ms. Angie Mae Villaren. The Workshop is composed of three (3) sessions: Advocacy Vision & Problem Statement; Communications and Advocacy Strategy; and Timeline, Monitoring, and Evaluation. The Workshop aims to provide a strategic framework for the prevention and elimination of Child Labor in the Philippines. The participants were divided into four groups for group work to draft, brainstorm, and share relevant information, ideas, and thoughts in implementing the advocacy campaign for the child-labor-free Philippines. Also, one of the reasons why this Workshop for Communication Plan of Child Labor is to update the previous Communication Plan and apply possible recommendations and suggestions. “The workshop is somehow draining but an amazing experience for me, because I got to experience and witness how hard it is to draft the Communication Plan especially when we’re talking about children, we need to come up with ideas on what is best for children who are victims of Child Labor, and how this Communication Plan can impact to the eradication of Child Labor in the Philippines, and we did collaboration, insights, or ways on how to address the Child Labor”, LVF social worker,Ms. Angie Villaren, said. Participating agencies put all their efforts into making the Communication Plan for the Child Labor Advocacy Campaign and looking forward to the successful Communication Plan 2024-2028. May this event be a prompt for us to help and encourage each other to promote the safety and well-being of children who are vulnerable to child labor, abuse, exploitation, and trafficking. Together let us give survivors of child labor in the Philippines a resilient, transformed, and empowered lives together with their families and communities, towards holistic and sustainable development.

Evey week, various chapter co-hosts and lead the group in prayer. Each prayer is a unique way of communicating and testifying God’s miracles and presence in their lives. Each prayer invites us to be closer and to strengthen our faith. Jesus is sending us out also to have peace with each other, to treat each other with same mercy and love that he has shown us. It’s a love that empowers us to love each other deeply and be at peace with each other. Loving each other and forgiving each other perhaps the most challenging aspect of our life as Christians. This month’s COP is co-hosted by Municipal Social Welfare Development Office (MSWDO)-Narra; MSWDO Palawan; PASWI National and LVF.

LVF’s MARCH-FILLED GRATITUDE MONTH

“The most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or touched, they are felt with the heart.”

Thanksgiving is the universal value of gratitude. We have a lot to be thankful for in March. We, at LVF are grateful for the gift of Don Bosco’s Dream at 9 which we are honored to commemorate on its 200th anniversary, as well as the equally significant PEC Gratitude Day for Sr. Tita, FMA! We are one with our girls in celebrating their becoming children of God, receiving the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion! Welcome to the Catholic World. Furthermore, we commend and celebrate all women who bravely pushed for women’s rights as we celebrate Women’s Month.  LVF’s Youth Helping Youth Roadtrip with the theme #FollowYourDream kickstarted its advocacy session in Negros Occidental.  Our girls are here to guide their peers in charting their future! Together, let us discover God’s beautiful plan in your life!

Wow! It is a March-filled gratitude month indeed!

BECOMING GOD’S BELOVED DAUGHTERS

March 07. Nine (9) LVF Girls opted to receive the sacraments of Christian initiation – Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist which lay the foundations of every Christian life. JJ & Reina shared:

JJ– ‘After I received the Sacrament of Confirmation, I felt like a newborn child, because even though I already received the sacrament of baptism and the holy eucharist, I still felt unborn because of the pain I struggled in my past. It feels like rising from the dead. Jesus is why I felt anew because He made me feel loved. He truly is the savior of the world.’

(After receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation, I felt that I truly belonged to the Catholic Church and that I am a child of God. And most importantly, I received two Sacraments: confirmation and first communion).

LVF ROADTRIPS #FollowYourDreams 2024
March 21. The LVF Child Protection Clinic mobile truck returned to Visayas for its LVF’s Roadtrip Negros-wide #FollowYourDreams (#FYD) Advocacy session! The nineteen (19) girls are accompanied by Sr. Phebe, FMA, and two (2) staff. The team conducted the first session for one hundred fifty (150) Grades 5 and 6 students at Gil Lopez Elementary School in Sagay City. The #FYD session aims to empower children and young people to be servant-leaders among their fellow youth, empowering the young people to discover God’s beautiful plan for them and work towards charting their life goals. During the session, the students eagerly shared their funny and unforgettable memories and experiences with the group. As they charted their dreams and created a ladder towards achieving them, the students were in awe now that they were able to see how their life may become through making small and achievable goals at each step. Goals become powerful when you write them down and share them with a trusted peer and/or mentor. Of course, this may change throughout their lives, but now they have the skills to create goals and smaller action steps to achieve any dream they have for the future. The result of the session is truly meaningful because it is the students themselves who drafted their life goals! Go and Follow Your Dreams.

LVF TVET QC 28th COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES

March 03. The Laura Vicuña Foundation, Inc. Technical-Vocational Training Center (TVET) in Quezon City held its 28th Commencement Exercises with the theme “LVF Graduates:  Equipped With Character and Skills for a Sustainable Future”.  A total of nine (9) trainees completed their 10-month on-the-job training in schools and partner companies. Ms. Kristel Mae Noda, LVF-TVET Center past pupil, now working as a Tenant Relations Assistant at SM Sta. Mesa, Manila, graced the event as the guest speaker. Tearful, she explained how their family’s low income made it impossible for them to send her to school. She took the risk of starting over in Metro Manila and was able to improve her life by discovering the Salesian Sisters of St. John Bosco Training Center. She reminisced fondly about her several “firsts” experiences with the Salesian Sisters and described how their presence and accompaniment transformed her life. She shared tips to the graduates now that they will become employees ‘to continue learning in their workplaces, and always pray to God for guidance in making life decisions.’ Sr. Marivic encouraged them to ‘Bloom where you planted.’ She instilled in the minds of the graduates that it is so important to do their best and put their hearts and minds into the work that they do.

March 17. The LVF #iamBRAVE advocacy was attended by children, both male & female, ages 8 years to 17 years old, with a total number of 56 attendees coming from communities of two (2) barangay Hillcrest and Pinagkaisahan. The activity highlighted the Women’s Month Celebration and Girl-Child Week 2024 as its roots in the recognition of International Women’s Day (IWD) every March 8th, it is a historical event stemming from the organizing efforts of women in the early 20th Century. Ms. Angie started the advocacy activity on UNCRC -child rights and the Law, the activity flow was lively, and the active participation of the children during the discussion was observed. And after the discussion, Ms. Angie prepared tricky questions related to the topics, to check the progress of these children about the topics. Children set an example to relate their understanding of the topic. And why it is important to know and observe the Child Safeguarding Policy. We celebrate Women’s History Month to remind everyone of the achievements of women throughout the years in our culture and society, and why it’s important to study them and their important moments in history, as we continue to impart the HERSTORY of many Juana’s to our young people helps them to cultivate their minds and raise their awareness; how and what is the significance of this celebration. It is also our way of looking back and paying respect and honoring the incredible women who paved the way for progress and equality.

March 12. LVF social workers were invited by Hon. Graziella Saab, Brgy. Pinagkaisahan Captain, to speak on Gender Sensitivity and Women’s Rights with the theme “Lipunang Patas sa Bagong Pilipinas: Kakayahan ng Kababaihan, Patutunayan” where twenty-five (25) Barangay leaders participated. The session’s goal was to provide participants with the information and understanding they need to be aware of gender issues, as well as promote women’s and human rights, gender equality, and the elimination of gender discrimination to build a more inclusive society. PEC GRATITUDE DAY: A DAY OF THANKSGIVING

March 10. LVF, together with other Salesian Educating Communities, from Luzon, Visayas, and MIMAROPA (Mindoro; Marinduque; Romblon; Palawan), celebrated the Provincial Educating Community (PEC) gratitude day for Sr. Teresita Padron, FMA! The Feast of Gratitude is a moment of strong communion of the whole Institute that gathers around Sr. Tita, the mother provincial, as a center of unity and bond of communion between all the Sisters and, as Educating Communities, together with young people, lay people, families. It is also an opportunity that increases the sense of belonging to the Institute and promotes communion of the community.
The origin of the gratitude day dates back to Mornese, where Mother Mazzarello was celebrated on 6 July, her name day, St. Domenica. In the book ‘Orme di vita tracce di futuro’ (Rome, 1996) under document no. 56 (pages 147-148) you can find the hymn for the name day of Mother Mazzarello of 6 July 1875. Among the Letters of Mother Mazzarello, we find various letters written in July, also to the girls of Las Piedras (L. 44) to thank the sisters and girls for the good wishes received. Since then, both at the Center of the Institute, that is in the Generalate, and at the local level, each community has celebrated the Feast, expressing gratitude to the Animator and in her, to all the benefactors of the house. In the same way, it also happens during the period of government of Mother Caterina Daghero. The Sisters celebrated Mother on the day of St. Catherine, her patron Saint. For all the other Mothers General, it was always celebrated in the Generalate, generally on the name day of the Superior General or a date significant for the Community. (https://www.cgfmanet.org/)

LVF GIRLS‘ TEAM BUILDING & RECOLLECTION ACTIVITY

March 26-27. The girls actively took part in the team-building activity led by Sr. Phebe, FMA. This activity aims to foster camaraderie, unity, and team effort to achieve their common goal. Through this, they learn skills that are necessary in life. Have you ever thought about just how much of an impact the ocean can have on your well-being? Rooting ourselves back in nature is a great way to heal and process mundane life. Not only do the waves of the shore act as an auditory hug but there are infinite pros to going by the sea. It is a perfect place and time for meditation and reflection; hence, Sr. Phebe took the opportunity to have the recollection of the girls. There were guide questions for the deepening and processing session. It is noticing and finding meaning in the simplest joy, for life is a series of thousands of tiny little miracles. In conclusion, they had a meditative walk along the beach.

FEB-MAZING FEBRUARY 2024

Is it a Feb-mazing month?! February is the second month of the year and this year, we have a leap day! The leap day balances our calendars with the earth’s orbit, preventing seasons from drifting out of place and ensuring equinoxes, solstices, and all the annual events follow their schedule. Everyone in the room had an opportunity to share about their struggles and current circumstances as young people dealing with the two most prevalent problems in today’s world: mental health problems and poverty. This conversation is about more than just airing grievances; it’s a conversation that will be taken to higher authorities to find a solution and close the gaps in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Kinship care is under Republic Act 11642, also known as the Domestic Administrative Adoption and Alternative Childcare Act, Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC) Undersecretary Mr. Angelo Tapales said “Something that we haven’t talked about in great detail is that kinship care, also known as relative foster care, which is defined as full-time care provided by family members within the fourth degree of consanguinity for a child.”

According to a 2020 online child protection study conducted by End Child Prostitution and Trafficking, 40% of the kid respondents used social media to communicate with strangers. About 30% of people reported receiving sexual materials via social media, and 50% of people who might have been the victim of sexual assault did not disclose any incidents.

The best interests of the children are kept in mind during the brainstorming and discussion sessions. “After attending this forum, we learned a lot and realized that children are among the most vulnerable members of society because they rely so heavily on adults and the government.” Therefore, we must collaborate to safeguard and empower children and fulfill LVF’s Child Protection Clinic tagline, “Building a Culture of Protection for Children and the Young”, Ms. Soqueña shared.

YES-AHA
Dec. 14. The Laura Vicuna Foundation Inc. organized the YES-AHA (Youth Empowerment through Sustainable Agriculture and Health Advocacy) program for young people to empower and inspire them to pursue careers in agriculture. This activity is more valuable to them than spending time in SOCMED or on the phone. The primary goal of this (YES-AHA) is to protect and manage this generation of youngsters from cybercrime, bullying, and other forms of bullying. Preventing this situation is like safeguarding their future. As part of our YES AHA program today, we harvested rice in the fields. We were divided into four (4) groups for this task for various reasons. The first group is GAPAS, which means those who are assigned to cut the rice from the pump. The second group is TALI, which is assigned to bind the rice into sizes that fit the thresher. The third group is HAKUT, which means those who are assigned to haul the rice. Finally, “IMBAK” means those who are assigned to collect and arrange the rice for the thresher. The activity lasted the entire day, filled with joy, passion, commitment, hard labor, and teamwork, with an added struggle and challenge due to the rainy day, but our young people were very blessed and appreciative of the blessing they received from our own rice field.

FAMILY DAY

As a Salesian family, one of our traditional events every year is Family Day, which is held during the Christmas season or before the end of the year to fulfill our vision of strengthening the bond between our parents and children or families themselves. The program began with a community recollection presented by Sr. Rosalia A. Panganiban, FMA, Center Head, in honor of the birth of Christ, followed by a family sharing of reflections on Christmas. Following the presentation, parlor games, and the most anticipated part of this celebration is the free “Ukay-Ukay” from the benefactors as their Christmas gift to the center. All the participants enthusiastically participated in all activities.

As part of the Christmas season celebration, the community of the Laura Vicuna Foundation was inspired to perform an authentic Christmas song by visiting benefactors’ homes in Puerto Princesa City. The community entertained the benefactor by dancing the “Kumukutikutitap Song” and singing the Christmas in our Hearts and Born on Christmas Day of learners choreographed by Mrs. Francisco Gabua, past pupil and volunteer. The learners are also grateful to the benefactors for constantly choosing the foundation as their charity. The foundation is eternally grateful and blessed by their presence and generosity, particularly their love for the foundation’s young people. The benefactors shared their blessings with learners, making them feel the genuine meaning of Christmas, which is love, sharing, caring, and giving. On the same day, the learners went on a city tour, stopping at Baker’s Hill and Mitra Ranch. This is a new and another memorable experience for them.
