PARENTS’ CONGRESS LVF 2024

Quezon City (Philippines). On 22 September 2024, a parent meeting was held in Cubao, Quezon City, at the Laura Vicuña Foundation (LVF) of St. Mary D. Mazzarello Province (FIL), which addresses the needs and problems of at-risk boys and girls on the theme: “Forever vs. Divorce.”

The participants – about a hundred parents from the FMA centers of Mabalacat, Pampanga, Canlubang, Laguna, Sta. Mesa, Manila, and the LVF communities of Cubao, Quezon City – gathered to reflect on how the divorce law, recently approved by the House and still to be approved by the Senate of the Philippines, could have an impact on the family. The proposal aims to recognize divorce in the country – the only one in the world together with the Vatican – that currently recognizes marriage as indissoluble, admitting only the nullity decreed by the canonical tribunals in cases of serious shortcomings.

The event opened with a greeting from Sister Maria Victoria Santa Ana, FMA, CEO of the Foundation, who emphasized the importance of the family as the foundation of society. She then shared the touching story of a couple whose separation led to lasting suffering for their children, highlighting the profound and often hidden consequences of failed marriages.
Speakers Mr. Relly and Mrs. Myrna Baclit and moderator Ms. Carol Monz Thor delved into concepts such as the sanctity of marriage, the challenges families face, and the growing reality of divorce in Philippine society.

Mr. Relly Baclit reminded the participants that marriage is not a simple contract but a covenant sealed by God that requires sacrifice and love. His wife, Myrna Baclit, emphasized the power of forgiveness and reconciliation, encouraging couples to pray and work through commitment and sacrifice rather than easily opting for divorce.

Lyn, a resident of Laura Vicuña Center in Cubao, was touched by the personal stories of those present. Coming from a broken home, she and her siblings were separated and plunged into poverty as a result of their parents’ separation. Her story shed light on the emotional and financial toll separation can have on children.

Discussions in the groups were filled with empathy, marked by the contrast between the traditional Catholic view of marriage and the concrete realities that sometimes lead couples to separation. While many participants supported the belief of ‘forever,’ the conversation opened up a space for compassion and understanding that separation, and eventually divorce, may be a necessary fallback for some.

The event coincided with Philippine Family Week, a nationwide initiative that promotes the unity and strength of families. In light of the divorce bill, Sister Maria Victoria concluded the Congress by recalling the enduring power of love, forgiveness, and faith in keeping families strong. She urged the participants not to embrace the proposed divorce bill and instead adhere to Christian values while facing the complexities of modern life.

The LVF Parents’ Congress 2024 served as a reminder that, although legislative changes may change the marriage landscape, the heart of the Filipino family – rooted in faith and a covenant of love sealed by God – remains as vital as ever. The event concluded with the Eucharistic Celebration presided over by Fr. Rey Paglinawan and a shared meal, a further sign of the closeness and support of the Laura Vicuña Foundation to families.

LVF ROADTRIP TO PALAWAN: TOGETHER, LET US END #TIP!
“Gagamitin ko ang impormasyon na ito bilang boses sa mga kabataan na walang boses.”
Sept. 13-17. This is just one of the many reactions and feedback from the participants during the LVF Initiative to Fight Trafficking-Anti Child Trafficking Session (LIFT-ACTS) conducted in different far-flung schools and communities in Palawan. Despite the challenges of Palawan’s geographical location, LVF was able to reach six hundred sixty-eight (668) students of Macarascas National High School, Bahile National High School, Ubaldo L. Conde National High School, The Parish of St. Joseph’s parishioners, LVF-TVET Palawan Trainers and Trainees, LVF-Girls, and LVF-Palawan Parents. During this preventive advocacy session, several realities came to light: most of the participants did not know what Trafficking in Persons is and the reality and severity of this dark and harrowing crime. “This is the first time that our participants and most of the schools that we went to have heard about trafficking in persons,” said Ms. Joy Hugo, LVF social worker and one of the facilitators of the LIFT-ACTS.

The Anti-Child Trafficking Session aims to raise awareness among children, youth, and parents who are vulnerable to child trafficking including parents, with Palawan is a famous tourist destination in the Philippines with open seas and ports, recalling that in 2018, Balabac, a municipality in Palawan, was tagged as a “backdoor” to Malaysia for human trafficking. The southern part of Palawan is used for human traffickers to travel by ship or boat, Atty Emmeline Aglipay-Villa said. The short film ‘Red Leaves Falling’ were shown to the participants, followed by a discussion and sharing. The participants committed to spread the information and knowledge to their friends and neighbors saying: “Gagamitin ko ang impormasyon na ito bilang boses sa mga kabataan na walang boses,” “Huwag tayo mahiyang magsumbong at lagi tayo maging aware sa mga future decisions natin,” “Huwag dali dali magtiwala at huwag kumapit sa patalim.” (“I will use this information as a voice to help my fellow youth,” … “Let’s not be shy to report and let’s always be aware of our future decisions,” “Don’t be too quick to trust and sell ourselves.”) (As parents, we must protect our children, don’t let them become victims of trafficking… Spread the information we learned today… Do not aspire too much or be selfish; it might cost your child’s safety.) This anti-child trafficking session was successful through the partnership and coordination with the Department of Education, Schools, Communities, and Sectors of Puerto Princesa City, Palawan. LVF social workers Ms. Josielyn Hugo, Ms. Angie Mae Villaren, and Ms. Jessa Mae Nardo facilitated it, assisted by Sr. Rosalia A. Panganiban, FMA of the LVF-Palawan. Together, let us raise awareness for the prevention of trafficking and the protection and empowerment of children, young people, and communities.

PASWI-COP

The Philippine Association of Social Workers, Inc-Circle of Prayer (PASWI-COP), has been a source of rest and recharge among social workers in the Philippines. It has uncovered God’s grace in times of difficulties and challenges and miracles for those faced with illness beyond the doctor’s healing capabilities. ‘My journey has taught me that God is our strength, hope, and healer,’ shared Ms. Myrna Dadang, a retired social worker, now an educator at Holy Cross Davao College. Our sharers continue to pray that may the strength of God sustain us; may the power of God preserve us; may the hands of God protect us; may the way of God direct us; may the love of God go with us day and night forever for the days to come. This weekly prayer habit is headed by Ma’am Eva Ponce de Leon and Sr. Ma. Victoria P. Sta. Ana, FMA co-hosted by different PASWI local chapters.

COMMEMORATIVE TREE-PLANTING:150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE INSTITUTE OF THE DAUGHTERS OF MARY HELP OF CHRISTIANS

August 13. In this fast-changing era where biological evolution occurs at a naturally slow rate, Laudato Si’ is Pope Francis’ appeal to every person on our planet. “The issue of environmental degradation challenges us to examine our lifestyle.” “While planting, I realized that we must take good care of our common home. Whenever we cut a tree, we have to plant another, for if we do not replace it, our common home will be destroyed,” said Khaye, LVF child advocate who is part of the activity. “Good education plants seeds when we are young, and these continue to bear fruit throughout life.”

THE LVF BUWAN NG WIKA CELEBRATION

“PILIPINO AT KATUTUBONG WIKA: KASANGKAPAN SA PAGTUKLAS AT PAGLIKHA”
(FILIPINO AND NATIVE LANGUAGES: TOOL FOR DISCOVERY AND CREATION)

Aug. 19. The Philippines is a country with ethnically diverse people. Scholarly studies suggest that there are some 150 languages and dialects spoken. This was the focus theme of this 2022 celebration of the Buwan ng Wika, “PILIPINO AT KATUTUBONG WIKA: KASANGKAPAN SA PAGTUKLAS AT PAGLIKHA.”  (FILIPINO AND NATIVE LANGUAGES: TOOL FOR DISCOVERY AND CREATION) Yes, at first glance, one would find this theme difficult. Still, the Vicunian organizers of the event ‘walk’ all through it patiently and informatively. The LVF girls are happy and willing to learn and explore the richness of our Filipino language and culture.

Ms. Cos and Ms.Yap’s team ( LVC girls) prepared various activities and opened the celebrations last Aug. 19, with the ceremonial ribbon cutting and short input on the theme.  Selected Vicunians performed the classic ‘Ako’y Isang Pinoy’ (I Am a Filipino) by Florante, and informative games thrilled them all the more.

At the culmination, the Vicunians honored our heroes as the day was National Heroes Day.  They enthusiastically prepared the roof deck for the said event.  Khaye and Edralyn were the hosts; they led the community to the singing of the National Anthem and gave a recap of the activities and contests that took place.  We have invited some judges-benefactors online to announce the winners of the two contests; they were Mrs. Bernadette Aurelio of Big Heart charity group, who frequently donates to LVF and do educational sessions for the girls, and Ms. Megan Guzman of Tugon Ateneo.   The contests were Group Singing of a song in different dialects dubbed “WIKA MO, AWITIN MO” (Gamit ang Katutubong Wika) (Sing Your Dialect) and the creation of an attire based on the culture of the region “FILIPINO KA, IPAGMALAKI MO”: Paggawa ng Katutubong Kasuotan (“You are a Filipino, Be Proud”): Making Native Clothing) each of the three groups represents.

The Group Singing winners performed their numbers while the three group representatives for the Katutubong Kasuotan (Native Clothing) wore their original creations. Ms. Bernadette, in her high appreciation of the girls’ creativity, pledged to give prizes to the winners.   Sr. Marivic awarded them with certificates and little tokens and encouraged them, even more to study the Filipino language and culture without prejudice and bias in her Good Night talk. She also emphasized the importance of valuing our language as an identity and a way to understand ourselves better.  All were happy to end the night.  Jazz (a Vicunian) has this to say, “Even though it is quite difficult, I have learned a song that is written in Bisaya (Cebuano). I kept on stuttering! I discovered how rich our country is during our traditional clothing-making contest! The clothes have their history and meaning too! The activity is very challenging, especially when we try to do our best to give justice to the region we chose to represent. Still, I believe that if we will see it, nothing is impossible!”

ECHO OF THE WRITESHOP SESSION ON CHILD PARTICIPATION

Aug. 26. Mrs. Mercedes Juncia re-echoed the Writeshop Session on Child Participation Advocacy and Communication Plan to LVF staff she was part of on July 18-19. This was held at  Bayview Park Hotel, Roxas Boulevard, and was organized by the Council for the Welfare of Children. Mrs. Juncia and seven (7) LVF staff participants reviewed the tools and indicators used to conduct advocacies in schools and communities. This can help raise public awareness and further strengthen child participation in the country.

The Philippine Association of Social Workers’ Incorporated (PASWI)’ COP was hosted by the Provincial Social Welfare Development Office (PSWDO) Palawan Chapter for the whole month of August.

LVC GRAZIE MILLE STORY

August 15, The Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary was well celebrated by the LVC Community, prepared by a ‘triduum’ – three-day Payer Service before the feast proper.  The day started with the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, followed by the joyful greetings of the Vicunians to the Sisters.  It was also a study day for the girls, but in the afternoon, Mama Mary gave us the most significant surprise- a gift, a new Vicunian, the nine-year-old Nellie ( not her real name) from one of the CPC areas we serve here in  Quezon City.

All were delighted to have her in our community, though we know that this will be a great challenge for us to take care of a nine-year-old girl.  We are confident that Mama Mary brought and entrusted her to us.  And so, in the evening, we prayed the Holy Rosary fervently with her.  Sr. Marivic, in her Good Night Talk, seriously told the Vicunians that Jesus had entrusted us with Nellie and since she is the youngest in the house, all have the responsibility to teach and show her the right and the good things to do daily.  All agreed and have the goodwill to be of help in any way to her.

A Sister casually chatted with her after several days, and the conversation was very revealing;

Sister:   How are you, Nellie? How do you find your stay here with us?

Nellie:  I am so happy to be here Sister.  “Hindi po ako aalis dito tulad ng ginawa ko sa isang Center. Kase dito may tulugan ako, may masarap na pagkain, ligtas ako at walang katatakutan, nakakapaglaro at nakakapag-aral po ako!” (“I am not escaping from here as I did in another Center.  Here I have a bed, delicious food, I am safe and have nothing to fear, and I am able to play here as well as study.”)

This is precisely what Laura Vicuna Residential Home for girls is for, a haven of protection and a home that gives hope to every child like Nellie.

LVF CELEBRATES THE NATIONAL CHILDREN’s MONTH

Nov. 03. The Laura Vicuna Foundation (LVF) takes part in the celebration of the 2021 National Children’s Month with this year’s theme: “Sama-samang Itaguyod Ang Karapatan ng Bawat Bata sa Panahon ng Pandemya” LVF has its own calendar of activities for its advocacies on child protection against abuse through its Youth Helping Youth, Follow Your Dream Workshops; #iamGREAT (Girls Reject Exploitation, Abuse & Trafficking); and #iamBRAVE (Boys Reject Abuse, Violence & Exploitation) which will centralize on the SAFE SPACES ACT or the “Bawal Bastos Law” in the Philippines. With these activities, LVF reaches more children, youth, teachers, to increase their awareness on child protection and to encourage every person’s commitment to observe and respect the rights of every child.

LVF VIRTUAL FOLLOW YOUR DREAM WORKSHOP

The Laura Vicuña Foundation (LVF) in partnership with the Eulogio Rodriguez Integrated School (ERIS) conducted the Follow Your Dream seminar-workshops to six hundred thirty-eight (638) Grades 7 to 12 students from November 9 to December 9, 2021. These seminar-workshops were facilitated by our LVF youth advocates. Sr. Candy Carmen Balverde, FMA, gave the introduction about LVF and gave the good-day talk about Don Bosco’s dream when he was 9 years old and showed a short video on vocation. The students were very inspired about the testimonies given by Hannah and Desiree on how their dreams came to life. The LVF advocates were very skilled in bringing out from the students who were their role models, their strengths and weaknesses, their goals in life and steps on how to reach them. They were able to have some self-reflections on what they are going to do to achieve their dreams. What made these sessions different? There were instances when we had to interact with some special children. “For me, patience is a virtue we should really practice while dealing with them. Treating them as God’s children with worth and dignity as persons are what really matters. Being participative is by getting answers through an interpreter. My interactions with them make me realize something – never underestimate their dreams. Through these seminar workshops they are able to discover and nurture them in order for these dreams to grow.” These experiences were very fulfilling. They were very memorable and worth remembering. This activity also coincided with the celebration of the National Children’s Month.

AWARENESS RAISING SESSION ON SAFE SPACES ACT TO 700 FIRST YEAR COLLEGE STUDENTS OF COLEGIO DE STA. ANA DE VICTORIAS.

Nov. 06, 2021. Promoting safe spaces was a collaborative and universal effort, not just the responsibility of one individual! On its 29th National Children’s Month celebration, the Laura Vicuna Foundation’s children advocate led a virtual awareness session on the SAFE SPACES ACT, publicly known as the “Bawal Bastos Law,” which was signed and became effective in 2019. The purpose of this session was to educate students on the numerous types of harassment that occurred on the streets, public spaces, schools, and workplaces, as well as the consequences for those who were found guilty of violating the law. Catcalling, leering, unwanted touches, sexist and other objectionable remarks directed towards a certain gender were all identified as forms of harassment by the participants. It was also an opportunity for them to express their feelings regarding their experiences and the terrible feelings they got when riding in a crowded bus, jeepney, or even walking along dark streets. Some of them offered advice on how to report such situations, and one even provided the phone number for their women’s desk officer in the event that they come across one or know someone who is being abused. It was also highlighted in the session that the school management has an important part in promoting a safe space for all- to teachers and students alike. At the end of the session, each participant made their own Safe Shields that would keep themselves safe. Most importantly, they enunciated the value of respect for each other! The children advocates challenged the participants into becoming a ‘safe space’ for all.

LVF CHILDREN ADVOCATES JOINS THE NATIONWIDE LEARNING AND CONSULTATION SESSIONS

Three children advocates, Ms. Shane, Ms. Hannah and Ms. Vicky, from Laura Vicuna Foundation (LVF) actively participated during the 4 day sessions (every Saturday of November) on the Nationwide Learning and Consultation Sessions which aims to consult children and youth in an advocacy plan in addressing violence against children in response to the invitation of the Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC). The three children advocate enthusiastically engaged themselves in the conversation by sharing their views and opinions regarding the issues and challenges faced by children especially in this time of the pandemic. They were also able to identify recommendations on how to effectively protect children from threats from abuses online and offline! They suggested that there should be a collective effort of the government to strengthen the implementation of laws that protect children; the private sectors to conduct awareness raising sessions in the communities and schools; and most especially, the engagement of parents and guardians in the implementation of these laws and becoming partners in these efforts so that each will become a protector of every child and an advocate in promoting child rights and ensuring that each one lives in a safe environment. This activity was spearheaded by the CWC in partnership with the Juvenile Justice Welfare Council and Consuelo Foundation as part of its celebration of the National Children’s Month.

LVF’S PAST PUPILS HOMECOMING 2021

On 21 November 2021, on the occasion of the Solemnity of Christ the King, the Annual LVF Past Pupils Homecoming was held virtually via google meet, organized by the LVF Past Pupils of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians-Fil Province with the theme, “Hope is My Home: Nananahan sa Pag-asa”. LVF Homecoming was attended by more than 100 past pupils coming from different provinces in the Philippines in Laguna, Bulacan, Pangasinan, Negros Occidental, Iloilo, Palawan, National Capital Region as well as outside of the Philippines like Malaysia and the United States.  The atmosphere was one of a family, simple, homey and being at ease with one another.

The LVF Past Pupils are always looking forward to come home to LVF each year on the Solemnity of Christ the King. The solemn celebration of the Holy Mass was presided by Fr. Roland Tuazon, CM.  In his homily he mentioned that our coming home to LVF is a way of saying thank you.  It is being in our home and reminiscing our experiences which are very important.  God wants us to have a good life, to live peacefully and with dignity.  Through the foundation, we experience His graciousness and His love to us.  It is our social commitment to share His blessings in whatever capacity we have and to establish His kingdom here on earth.  We should also stand for the truth and let God reign in one’s heart. He also challenged each one to be an instrument of God’s overflowing grace and be of blessing to one another.

Sr. Ma. Victoria P. Sta. Ana, FMA, LVF’s Managing Director, thanked the Past Pupils for what they do to help their families and those around them this Pandemic.  She gave an input on Pope Francis’ letter to the youth – Christus Vivit which was thought provoking.   She quoted Pope Francis “You are the now of God, You must bear fruit (96)… with commitment and generosity.  Being keys of the future young people should work for a better world.  Be transformers, protagonists, leaders of transformation and not be bystanders but be protagonists of the revolution of charity and service, fight also for the common good.  God should be in our hearts and be instruments of peace, justice and truth.”

The activity was graced with very personal testimonies of the four success stories of LVF Past Vicuñans, recalling their God- experiences and learning’s on being prayerful, generous in helping those in need which they are now applying in their daily lives! One of them shared that it was Mary who brought her to the care of the Sisters and she found not only a Technical Vocational School but a home which trained her to be creative and smart!  Another said that LVF is her home and family who prepared her for life especially to be independent as she was orphaned early in life. Another shared that LVF trained them to be generous and  to hold on to God and to stand up again after facing adversaries. Mr. Belarmino, LVF Past Pupil said that one of the Vicuñans’ true mark  is that they are good influence to their fellow young people via the Preventive System’s way and they know how to appreciate and value the blessings they received  especially the values formation and educational assistance extended to them to uplift their lives and their families.

The LVF Past Pupils are relatively young and trying to build their families.  Yet they took time to  form their organizing team to become responsible for the different committees: the flow of the program, the invitations, the Eucharistic Celebration, the games and the prizes.  They were also the ones who hosted the event, pooled their resources for the prizes and shared their unforgettable moments with LVF during the sharing’s.  It was a beautiful experience for us to see these Vicuñans sharing their time, efforts and resources to make this homecoming a family  event and a reality. Indeed, this is a world which we create together.

MAID: A CASE ANALYSIS

The LVF girls were given session on case analysis about Alex’s life in the mini movie series “MAID” which prompted the girls to critically analyse and identify social issues presented in the said movie series. It revolved around Alex, the protagonist, a solo parent who was a victim-survivor of domestic violence struggling to work as a maid with meager income to survive and barely able to support her daughter. They were also able to identify the problem in the social environment that the character was in. It provoked them to ask questions they did not understand and were enlightened as the session went on. In the end, they saw that the value of education and the consequences of decisions that were off the mark. The session was facilitated by Ms. Rosea Marie Monsay, LVF social worker, with Sr. Teresita  Mislang, FMA.

LVF @THE SYNOD 2021-2023 FOR A SYNODAL CHURCH

The LVF Educating Community was an active participant in the Synod 2021-2023 for a Synodal Church in the Diocese of Cubao with Sr. Analyn Guerrero, FMA  as the coordinator. A series of meetings with the Immaculate Conception Cathedral Synod Consultation in-charge were done to prepare for this momentous event.  The Educating community was given two inputs/webinar to deepen and understand what SYNOD and SYNODALITY are the WHY our Pope Francis initiated this Synod in the Church and our individual as well as communal responsibility in this Synod. Finally, on November 12, 2021 from 7:45 to 9:45 PM, together with some lay people and Redemptorist Seminarians the Synod consultation was held via online.  All agreed that that evening was not an ordinary one, ‘we have just made history’ and we felt so blessed to have been chosen by God to have an active role in this great process of renewal in our Catholic Church.  It gave us double joy to realize that given the reality of our apostolate, our Church indeed is an INCLUSIVE CHURCH, seeking the voice of the least, last and the lost.  We have felt heard, valued and given importance.  Thank you, Lord, for this wonderful gift.

MENTAL AND SPIRITUAL WELLNESS

The Laura Vicuna Foundation joined the FIAT’s webinar Finale on their Mental Wellness Series through the invitation of Ms. Vicky Cuisia. LVF was able to join its two (2) sessions Spiritual Rx: A Forum for The Youth and Families (Oct. 25) and Healing, Hoping and Loving: A Panel Discussion on Mental health and the Home (Nov. 29). After joining the sessions, Jessabelle had this to say: “We cannot heal alone and by ourselves. At the back of my mind, I was reminded of the times when I thought I could handle myself on my own but then I realize that I can’t because the truth is I struggle. It made me realize and be reminded again of the importance of community support: the support of the family that you belong in, loved ones or anyone that’s close to you.”

LVF SOLIDARITYserye

In the midst of this global health crisis, it is comforting to know that we do not fight this battle alone, but it strengthens our support and draws us closer to each other. Now is the time to act, to feel discomfort of the difficult reality that surrounds us. And in this discomfort that the LVF Solidarityserye continues to reach out for its Child Protection Communities in Taguig, Marikina, Cavite, Pinagkaisahan, Bacood, Botocan, PH-Sta. Mesa, Judge Jimenez and Hillcrest by sharing with them 1,387 packs of bread (3 pcs per packs), 210 slices of puto and pudding baked by the girls. Our deepest gratitude to Ms. Marie C. Young for the donations of Selecta Milk which the kids really enjoyed. Indeed, solidarity allows us to overcome the adversities that present themselves throughout life.

LVF ONLINE KATESISMO!

“Salamat po sa mga Sisters at Vicuñans dahil po sa inyo nakaka=attend po kami ng Misa tuwing Linggo.” One of the child participant said this during one of the LVF’s awareness sessions. With this, LVF is much more ardent to continue its virtual Catechesis. This month of November, the weekly Sunday catechesis has reached nine hundred eighty-three (983) children, youth and families. Facilitated by Sr. Teresita Mislang, FMA, she joined the community in celebrating the Eucharistic Celebration.

ADVENT @LVF

The LVF educating community had a prayerful journey this advent season as together we trod the path pointed out to us by the Church in this four week preparation for Christmas – the birth of our Lord. We lighted the candles of hope, peace, joy and finally the love in a most fervent manner every Saturday evening in our small, cozy Chapel.  As we lit each candle we were urged to reflect and put into practice the virtue assigned in that particular week that surely gave more meaning to our Advent Season and preparation for Christmas.
