LVF 32nd ANNUAL PARTI-HANG KAY SAYA 2022

PARTI-HAN-which means to impart, to give, or to share. The Laura Vicuna Foundation’s Annual Parti-han celebrated every December, is the most awaited celebration of our Child Protection Clinic Communities (CPC), for this is the day of unboxing the gifts! The LVF sisters, girls, and staff excitedly packed 1,500 gift packs of blankets, spaghetti, hotdogs, kikiam, bacon, popcorn, pillows, choco mucho, milo, milk, and rice. As we hand them their gifts, we are also readying their hearts for the coming of the child Jesus as our theme states, “LVF 32nd Annual Parti-hang Kay Saya: Hatid si Kristo sa Puso ng Bawat Isa!” (LVF 32nd Annual Parti-hang Kay Saya: bringing Christ to Everyone’s Heart!)

Khaye, LVF child advocate who also volunteered to join the gift giving, shared that upon seeing the CPC Truck, people swarmed! “Takbuhan sila nung Makita ang CPC Truck. Masayang tinatanggap ng mga tao ang mga regalo. Sinasabi nila na malaking tulong daw sa kanila.Nagpapasalamat sila sa mga donors at pati na sa kanila Sisters.”  (When they saw the CPC Truck, they ran towards us. They were so happy to receive the gifts and even said the gift packs immensely helped them. They also expressed gratitude and thanks to the donors and the Sisters.) In their Facebook posts, families who received the gift packs say they are thankful for the  Christmas gifts. Mr. Ryan Azucena, social worker, Khaye, volunteer, and Jean Gonzales distributed the giftpacks to the CPC Communities in Marikina, Taguig, Gen. November 2022 News

NOVEMBER: NATIONAL CHILDREN’S MONTH

The late Philippine President Benigno Aquino III signed in 2015 Republic Act 10661, making November the official National Children’s Month (NCM) in the Philippines, its origins being the UN World Children’s Month. This 2015 Act encourages Filipinos to know and understand the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). The Philippines signed the UN CRC on Jan. 26, 1990, making it the 109th country to sign the Convention. The Philippine Senate ratified it on Aug. 21, 1990. The 2022 year’s NCM theme is “Kalusugan, Kaisipan at Kapakanan ng Bawat Bata Ating Tutukan”.  It focuses more on the mental health and well-being of children.  This year’s theme is anchored by the World Health Organization’s definition,n, which is a state of complete physical, psychological and social well-being of a person and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.  Mental health is integral to health, while well-being is its positive aspiration.   The silent victims of the pandemic are the children and the youth.

The Laura Vicuña Foundation’s activities this November were aimed to instill and sustain in our consciousness the promotion and protection of children’s rights. Listening to their voices can make a difference and will be able to change their lives. #ParaSaBata!

Sr. Ana returned to the Father last Oct. 25, 2022.  Fr. Juvelan admired Sr. Marivic as Laura Vicuna Foundation’s (LVF) managing director. Being a mother and journeying not only with the children at LVF-QC but to hundreds and thousands of young people whom she has touched lives at the CPC Communities. We thank the Lord for the gift of her person to all of us. Sixty years of being awesome. Sixty years of touching lives and giving hope! We always pray for her intentions, good health, and happiness. Sr. Ana Guerrero planned Sr. Vic’s grand birthday celebration. October 2022 News

A BITTERSWEET OCTOBER

October leaves us with bittersweet memories brought about by the seasons of life. It is a striving of… a moving on… to a better state, to a brighter place. . . coupled with hard work; with mixed emotions of exhaustion and celebration, sadness and deep joy which burst forth into AHA monents.

  • LVF underwent the Department of Social Welfare Development validation process and it was granted a renewal of its license to operate;
  • BRAVE (Buddies Reject Abuse, Violence and Exploitation) Program in far-flung Negros Occidental reached 2,000 participants in schools and communities;
  • LVF staff of 25 years, Ms. Virginia Jison, retired and migrated to her family in Canada;
  • LVF-TVET Technical Directress and Sister Assistant to the Vicunians, Sr. Ana Guerrero, FMA, who had a great knack for youth pastoral and for making people special and loved, was suddenly called Home to the loving embrace of our Father in Heaven .

At LVF, we do not shrink challenges, hardships, sufferings and death for they all give birth to life

EXPECTATION vs.REALITY:  AN ECOLOGICAL DIALOGUE

October 2, 2022.  The Laura Vicuna Foundation Inc. gathered more than 1,000 CPC (Child Protection Clinic) members in an online ECOLOGICAL DIALOGUE entitled EXPECTATION VS. REALITY – Listen to the Voice of Creation on the occasion of the Laudato Si month-long celebration.  The LVF stays committed to advocating the Catholic Church’s urgent and pressing call for ‘care for our common home and to take swift and unified global action. Thus, LVF earnestly involves the grassroots communities in this tedious yet noble task of saving our mother earth.  Sr. Runita Borja, FMA General Councilor for Youth Pastoral, and Sr. Teresita Padron, FMA FIL_PNG Provincial Superior, graced the event, which was youth-led.

This Ecological Dialogue is LVF’s response to Pope Francis’s appeal to “every person living on this planet for an inclusive dialogue about how we are shaping the future of our planet.” (https://www.usccb.org/offices/general-secretariat/laudato-si-care-our-common-home)

In her message, Sr. Runita Borja, FMA, highlighted our “sense of interrelatedness not only to each other but most especially to creation, that the commitments made in this Ecological Dialogue should be turned into concrete action that could form a chain of small and beautiful ways of caring for our common home, the earth.”  Above all, she pointed out the “supremacy of love, of doing everything in love and with love, as Jesus became one of us in His incarnation.”

LVF gathers its members and tries to listen to the voice of creations’ real status in each of our respective CPC communities, face it squarely, call it by its real name, and start through the making of individual commitments to saving our common home.

The day’s activity is a fruit of our ‘coming together, discernment, and sharing of resources.  The two youth leaders of Laura Vicuna Center Cubao Hannah Babes Yap and Jazlyn Narvadez through the guidance of Sr. Analyn Guerrero, FMA, prepared the event by gathering the LVF-CPC Youth Leaders for a series of meetings for brainstorming, sharing, and identifying different CPC community environmental realities, formulating strategies on how to effectively help our LVF members actively and concretely contribute to the realization of our care for the earth.

It was an interactive dialogue between LVF and CPC Communities as each participant shared their learnings and realizations upon listening to the discussion, which was centered on “Listening to the Voice of Creation” towards zeroing in on the meaning and implication of Man’s CARBON IMPRINT. This awakened consciousness was deepened by an Ecological Footprint test aimed at making the participants aware of their contribution to global warming. Cognizant of their harmful actions, the participants commit to making tangible steps in reducing carbon imprint starting in their homes. The children, youth, and parents committed themselves to observe proper waste disposal and saving water and electric consumption, to name a few.

With the experts who presuppose earth’s end in 30 years, it is high time for us all to “renew our relationship with our Creator and all creation through celebration, conversion, and commitment together.” God’s creation moans ever louder and suffers more every day amidst the ongoing climate emergency and biodiversity crisis.

The Ecological Dialogue proved that solutions to climate change are in each individual’s hands; as Pope Francis said, “No one is so poor they cannot give what they have…” (twitter-pontiflex, June 14, 2018).  Yes, we might feel that in our simplicity and ordinariness, our contribution is insignificant, but with the earth’s emergency now, “our gathering together and diligent practice of reducing our carbon imprint impacts transformation for our common home,” says Sr. Maria Victoria Sta. Ana, FMA, in one of her interventions during the dialogue.  Indeed, TOGETHER, WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

During her interview, Hannah said that “Napakahalaga ng NCCT sapagkat nandiyan sila, sila na nagiging magulang namin sa telebisyon. Sila ang gabay namin,  at ang ipinapakita po nila sa amin ay kabutihan…na habang lumalaki kami natututo kami kung ano iyong tama at mali.” (The presence of the NCCT is very important for they become our parents/guardians in the television. They guide us and shows us what is good…that while we are growing, we are also learning on what is right and wrong). She also urged her fellow young people not to forget their learnings.  This significant celebration was joined by the NCCT Executive Director Ms. Daisy Atienza, NCCT Chairman Atty. God is alive through the Holy Spirit that helps and guides us in our daily life.

FROM LVF-FIL TO CANADA

for Ms. Virgie Jison for her retirement. Ate Gie, whom she is fondly called, has been of service to the Laura Vicuna Foundation for twenty-six (26) years. The girls rendered words of appreciation and heartwarming songs for her.  LVF is grateful for Ate Gie’s contribution, hardwork, dedication, fidelity to the vision, and zeal to the mission and goals of the Foundation. In her retirement, we pray for her good health, happy life and new adventures with her family in Canada.

FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS

Oct. 25, 2022. Our dear Sr. Analyn “ANA” Guerrero, FMA returned to the Father’s loving embrace. Sr. Ana has lived her life to the fullest and touched the lives of so many young people in the different schools of the Salesian Sisters in the Philippines! She lived the last 4 years of the 27th year of her FMA Religious Life as an assistant to the Vicunians and Technical Directress of the Laura Vicuna Foundation, Inc., TVET, Quezon City.  She will forever be missed! We continue to pray for the repose of her soul.

Hannah, 18 years old Vicunian, one of the thousand girls whose life was touched by Sr. Ana, shared her profound gratitude and experiences of being accompanied by Sr. Ana:

Sr. Ana and I had been together since she was assigned at the Laura Vicuña Foundation, Inc. for 4 years. We, Vicunians, have named Sr Ana as our, ‘UNIQUE SISTER’! She stood out for she went beyond her duty when it came to disciplining and forming us. She closely walked with us in our Journey of Hope. Her accompaniment greatly endeared and influenced us!

Sr. Ann knew each one of us very well. At times, more than we know ourselves. She felt our sadness, anger, anxiety, fears, and secrets.  She knew what we really liked and what we needed. She never lost her childlike attitude: she was spirited, joyful, bright, and youthful. She is a bundle of joy to us.

She always encouraged us to think outside the box! Sr. Ana is our today’s living monument of St. John Bosco for she does not want us idling by or lazy. She always reminded us, “Study hard and dream big since you are brilliant”.

She is very creative and constantly makes activities so that we are occupied and spared from any temptation. She encourages us to do and lead the youth sessions. Always motivates us to be not afraid, for she is just right behind us. “I got your back,” she would say.

Significantly, Sr. Ana strongly inculcates in us the value of HONESTY. DO NOT TELL LIES. We should always tell the truth, or else, it’s World War III!

The young people were the center of Sr. Ana’s life. She cared deeply about each of us. She wants us to live up to the Salesian Youth spirit-joyful, active, prayerful, and HOLY. You cannot get away from her during prayer times. If someone had not spent personal time in prayer in front of the Blessed Sacrament, she would chide, “Those of you who have not prayed yet, go and thank God for all the blessings you have received.”

Sr Ann, we have witnessed your selflessness by always putting our needs before your own and forgetting about your own needs. Thank you so much, Sr. Ana, for everything. For sharing your life with us. For journeying and accompanying us to the path that leads to Mary and God.

Sr. Ana, we love you so much!

Ayaw nya kaming lalanta lanta, loading at luting.

A SEPTEMBER TO REMEMBER

Filipinos await the clock to tick 12:00 am, the 1st day of the BER months, as radio stations play the song of Mr. Jose Mari Chan to welcome Christmas.  No country can beat the Philippines in the world’s earliest and longest Christmas season, from September 1 to the Feast of Sto. Nino on the third week of January. Yes, only in the Philippines! In September, Filipinos happily begin to prepare for the coming of the Lord Jesus by putting up their Christmas trees, “Belen” (nativity scenes), and parol, as well as start, shopping for their Christmas gifts for the Season. Likewise, for the Laura Vicuna Foundation, Inc., September is a month to remember and celebrate! The Security Exchange Commission issued a Certificate of Incorporation legalizing its existence on September 19, 1990, birthing the Laura Vicuna Foundation, Inc!  Happy 32nd Birthday, LVF!  May you have more birthdays to come as you continue to Give Hope a Home.

FAMILY ASSEMBLY ON  #WeAreBRAVE

On September 18, 2022, the Laura Vicuna Foundation Inc. organized a Family Assembly on #weareBRAVE (BUDDIES REJECT ABUSE, VIOLENCE, and EXPLOITATION) via google meet. In a partnership between the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians Bosco and lay professionals in celebration of its 32nd Anniversary Celebration. The LVF Family Assembly anticipates honoring the Filipino Family and its contribution to nation-building. National Family Week takes place in the last week of September and is recognized by the government and the churches. The Assembly was joined by more than 260 families totaling 650 participants from LVF’s Child Protection Clinic Communities in Brgy. Pinagkaisahan; Judge Jimenez; Hillcrest; Culiat; Botocan; Bacood; Marikina; Cavite; Taguig; PH-Sta. Mesa and even participants are coming from Calamba and Pampanga.

Sr. Maria Victoria P. Sta. Ana, FMA, Managing Director of LVF, said in her opening remark that the family plays a vital role in promoting and carrying the CULTURE of PROTECTION. The LVF #weareBRAVE is being launched to gather and create a pool of advocates and to empower all to reject all forms and kinds of genderless abuses and violence that tramples human dignity! Together, Let us reject, beat and end Abuse, Violence, and Exploitation. Together, we are BRAVE, and WE CAN. Mrs. Mercedes Carla Juncia, LVF Social Worker and speaker, tackled the ramifications of changing family structures for children and young people. She also discussed various drivers of violence in the home, school, and community settings, laid down researched-based data on the abuses commonly experienced by children, and taught them some pointers on protective behavior. LVF young people recognize that friends or buddies are significant influencers in promoting a culture of protection. They acknowledge that regardless of sex, gender, age, and culture, all are vulnerable to violence and exploitation. The promotion of protection is not only to the #IamBRAVE but should also expand to #WeAreBRAVE, for we are “stewards” of each other.

Parents stressed that they should be the first to become their children’s “ka-BUDDIES” or friends. As parents or guardians, they are the first to notice the change in the conduct of their children and take action on alarming behaviors immediately. For three decades and two years, LVF has sustained its zeal in staying close and, at the same time, broadening its horizon with and for the people. The LVF CPC Communities continue to grow and become self-reliant as LVF unceasingly pushes for the Protection and Empowerment of young people through Education.

COMMEMORATIVE TREE-PLANTING:150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE INSTITUTE OF THE DAUGHTERS OF MARY HELP OF CHRISTIANS

August 13. In this fast-changing era where biological evolution occurs at a naturally slow rate, Laudato Si’ is Pope Francis’ appeal to every person on our planet. “The issue of environmental degradation challenges us to examine our lifestyle.” “While planting, I realized that we must take good care of our common home. Whenever we cut a tree, we have to plant another, for if we do not replace it, our common home will be destroyed,” said Khaye, LVF child advocate who is part of the activity. “Good education plants seeds when we are young, and these continue to bear fruit throughout life.”

THE LVF BUWAN NG WIKA CELEBRATION

“PILIPINO AT KATUTUBONG WIKA: KASANGKAPAN SA PAGTUKLAS AT PAGLIKHA”
(FILIPINO AND NATIVE LANGUAGES: TOOL FOR DISCOVERY AND CREATION)

Aug. 19. The Philippines is a country with ethnically diverse people. Scholarly studies suggest that there are some 150 languages and dialects spoken. This was the focus theme of this 2022 celebration of the Buwan ng Wika, “PILIPINO AT KATUTUBONG WIKA: KASANGKAPAN SA PAGTUKLAS AT PAGLIKHA.”  (FILIPINO AND NATIVE LANGUAGES: TOOL FOR DISCOVERY AND CREATION) Yes, at first glance, one would find this theme difficult. Still, the Vicunian organizers of the event ‘walk’ all through it patiently and informatively. The LVF girls are happy and willing to learn and explore the richness of our Filipino language and culture.

Ms. Cos and Ms.Yap’s team ( LVC girls) prepared various activities and opened the celebrations last Aug. 19, with the ceremonial ribbon cutting and short input on the theme.  Selected Vicunians performed the classic ‘Ako’y Isang Pinoy’ (I Am a Filipino) by Florante, and informative games thrilled them all the more.

At the culmination, the Vicunians honored our heroes as the day was National Heroes Day.  They enthusiastically prepared the roof deck for the said event.  Khaye and Edralyn were the hosts; they led the community to the singing of the National Anthem and gave a recap of the activities and contests that took place.  We have invited some judges-benefactors online to announce the winners of the two contests; they were Mrs. Bernadette Aurelio of Big Heart charity group, who frequently donates to LVF and do educational sessions for the girls, and Ms. Megan Guzman of Tugon Ateneo.   The contests were Group Singing of a song in different dialects dubbed “WIKA MO, AWITIN MO” (Gamit ang Katutubong Wika) (Sing Your Dialect) and the creation of an attire based on the culture of the region “FILIPINO KA, IPAGMALAKI MO”: Paggawa ng Katutubong Kasuotan (“You are a Filipino, Be Proud”): Making Native Clothing) each of the three groups represents.

The Group Singing winners performed their numbers while the three group representatives for the Katutubong Kasuotan (Native Clothing) wore their original creations. Ms. Bernadette, in her high appreciation of the girls’ creativity, pledged to give prizes to the winners.   Sr. Marivic awarded them with certificates and little tokens and encouraged them, even more to study the Filipino language and culture without prejudice and bias in her Good Night talk. She also emphasized the importance of valuing our language as an identity and a way to understand ourselves better.  All were happy to end the night.  Jazz (a Vicunian) has this to say, “Even though it is quite difficult, I have learned a song that is written in Bisaya (Cebuano). I kept on stuttering! I discovered how rich our country is during our traditional clothing-making contest! The clothes have their history and meaning too! The activity is very challenging, especially when we try to do our best to give justice to the region we chose to represent. Still, I believe that if we will see it, nothing is impossible!”

ECHO OF THE WRITESHOP SESSION ON CHILD PARTICIPATION

Aug. 26. Mrs. Mercedes Juncia re-echoed the Writeshop Session on Child Participation Advocacy and Communication Plan to LVF staff she was part of on July 18-19. This was held at  Bayview Park Hotel, Roxas Boulevard, and was organized by the Council for the Welfare of Children. Mrs. Juncia and seven (7) LVF staff participants reviewed the tools and indicators used to conduct advocacies in schools and communities. This can help raise public awareness and further strengthen child participation in the country.

PASWI-CIRCLE OF PRAYER (COP)

The Philippine Association of Social Workers’ Incorporated (PASWI)’ COP was hosted by the Provincial Social Welfare Development Office (PSWDO) Palawan Chapter for the whole month of August.

LVF SOLIDARITYSERYE

With the Child Protection Clinic Communities, LVF continues to share its blessings. LVF girls pack school supplies, bread, and rice for those attending the weekly Catechesis conducted alternately by Sr. Candy Carmen Balverde and Sr. Ana Guerrero, FMA. Our hearts are warmed by the lovely smiles on their faces. We extend our gratitude to our contributors and supporters who work alongside us to help our brothers.

LVC GRAZIE MILLE STORY

August 15, The Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary was well celebrated by the LVC Community, prepared by a ‘triduum’ – three-day Payer Service before the feast proper.  The day started with the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, followed by the joyful greetings of the Vicunians to the Sisters.  It was also a study day for the girls, but in the afternoon, Mama Mary gave us the most significant surprise- a gift, a new Vicunian, the nine-year-old Nellie ( not her real name) from one of the CPC areas we serve here in  Quezon City.

All were delighted to have her in our community, though we know that this will be a great challenge for us to take care of a nine-year-old girl.  We are confident that Mama Mary brought and entrusted her to us.  And so, in the evening, we prayed the Holy Rosary fervently with her.  Sr. Marivic, in her Good Night Talk, seriously told the Vicunians that Jesus had entrusted us with Nellie and since she is the youngest in the house, all have the responsibility to teach and show her the right and the good things to do daily.  All agreed and have the goodwill to be of help in any way to her.

A Sister casually chatted with her after several days, and the conversation was very revealing;

Sister:   How are you, Nellie? How do you find your stay here with us?

Nellie:  I am so happy to be here Sister.  “Hindi po ako aalis dito tulad ng ginawa ko sa isang Center. Kase dito may tulugan ako, may masarap na pagkain, ligtas ako at walang katatakutan, nakakapaglaro at nakakapag-aral po ako!” (“I am not escaping from here as I did in another Center.  Here I have a bed, delicious food, I am safe and have nothing to fear, and I am able to play here as well as study.”)

This is precisely what Laura Vicuna Residential Home for girls is for, a haven of protection and a home that gives hope to every child like Nellie.

July 2022 News

Defying Gravity this July

We at LVF want to be limitless in doing and spreading good to others, and we do it with passion, dedication, and innovation.  This JULY, we dare defy the easy and the normal; we defy gravity. Defying Gravity is from the famous musical ‘Wicked.’  The ‘infamous’ Wicked Witch of the West as a prequel to the Wizard of Oz, ‘she sings of how she wants to live without limits, going against the rules that others have set for her, trying to convince her friend to follow her, by a moment, without success. During the song, Elphaba, cornered by those who are hunting her, enchants a broomstick to levitate and, in the last verse, rises from the stage and levitates above the angered Citizens of Oz, who try in vain to “bring her down.” – https://wicked.fandom.com/wiki/Defying_Gravity . It may sound negative, but it depicts the limitless spirit of positivity to soar high above adversaries. It speaks of ‘turning up when everyone else is turning down, and as the song says;

I’m through with playing by the rules.
Of someone else’s game…
Close my eyes and leap!

I think I’ll try defying gravity.
It’s time to try defying gravity.

And you can’t pull me down.

At LVF, we not only think but work outside the box.

LVF-FIL HOLDS “REAL TALK” ON THE OCCASION OF WORLD DAY AGAINST TRAFFICKING IN PERSONS

July 30, 2022. The Laura Vicuna Foundation (LVF)-FIL is one with the world in commemorating the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons as it holds an advocacy campaign coined “REAL TALK ON TRAFFICKING IN PERSONS,” with approximately seven hundred (700) attendees coming from LVF’s ten (10) Child Protection Clinic Communities on July 30, 2022, in Luzon, via google meet facilitated by LVF Youth Advocates Ms. Jazlyn and Vicky. Cases of Trafficking in Persons are a perennial issue around the globe, and it is compounded by technological expansion, therefore the theme “Use and Abuse of Technology.” Intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic, the crime of human trafficking is now prevalent in cyberspace.  Technology is currently being used by traffickers to identify, groom and recruit victims. Mr. Ryan Azucena, an LVF social worker, talked about the three elements of trafficking, which were solidified by the four courageous survivors of human trafficking from the Laura Vicuna Foundation Communities, who described the horrors of their ordeals.  The youngest trafficked survivor who gave a testimony is a 13-year-old who was sold 4 to 6 times daily for commercial sex until she was 15. Their testimonies traced back to how they felt neglected and abused by their own families as a child and, unwillingly, found themselves falling victim to pimps.  Most of them narrated that they were forced to do the work for their family-shouldering the financial needs instead of their parents.  The oldest trafficked survivor is a single mother of 2 children who went to Dubai as a domestic helper but was sold every night to several men.  The bio-psycho-social-emotional struggle these survivors have to deal with is too much to bear for them to the point that rehabilitation, healing, and recovery are needed. That being said, the kind of family environment where the child is brought up plays a vital role in their development and fate.

Human trafficking is real. Turning a blind eye and ignoring this dehumanizing crime is a form of injustice! We need a strong with the grassroots in promoting a CULTURE OF PROTECTION! Mr. Mark Duran, one of the parent participants, invites everyone to “be part of the change, to be God-centered parents-one who brings the family to church.” He challenged them to “be part of the victim’s coping and healing.” He reiterated that “parents should not sell their children nor use them for income generation.”

Sr. Ma. Victoria P. Sta. Ana, FMA, in her closing remarks, emphasized that we strengthen our families and communities so that no child will be abused, exploited, and trafficked; furthermore, together, let us build a CULTURE OF PROTECTION for children and youth.

TOGETHER, WE ARE BRAVE

The Laura Vicuña Foundation (LVF), through her representative Ms. Mercedes A. Juncia, gave two (2) advocacy sessions on #iamBRAVE (Buddies Reject Abuse, Violence, and Exploitation) for July with a total of two hundred thirty-two (232) participants.  The sessions were conducted on the following dates:  July 5, 2022, at Brgy. 2A Covered Court for Barangays 2 and 2A with 99 attendees and July 6, 2022, at Brgy. Chamberry Covered Court for the 133 residents.  After the sessions, some approached the Social Worker thanking the organization for coming up with this program.  One mother said that this session benefits her since she has a daughter.  Another mother shared that she recently encountered cyberbullying with her daughter in Senior High School.  She reported this incident to the school principal because she knew that it would not be resolved on their own. These advocacy sessions were made possible in partnership with DSWD Manapla. The social worker has observed people’s enthusiasm to learn, particularly among parents, about how they may shield their kids from the harm of all types.

LVF JOINS CWC WRITESHOP SESSION

The Laura Vicuña Foundation (LVF) was invited by the Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC) with the National Committee on Children and Youth Participation on a write-shop for the Development of Child Participation Advocacy and Communication Plan on July 18-19, 2022 at Bayview Park Hotel, Roxas Boulevard.  This write-shop aims to develop the indicators, measurement tools, and implementation plan.  Once the program has been designed, it can be used to raise public awareness and further strengthen child participation in the country.  LVF was represented by one of her social workers Ms. Mercedes A. Juncia.

LVF TVET CENTER, QC 27TH GRADUATION EXERCISES

July 31. The Laura Vicuna Foundation salutes the nineteen (19) graduates of TVET Center QC batch 2021 for overcoming not only academic hurdles but other life challenges as they take the first step into becoming! Sr. Ma. Victoria Sta. Ana challenged them to “carry with them the Salesian values in their workplaces, to work diligently, to give their best in everything they do, and to go an extra mile.”  Em, one of the graduates, said that she still could not believe she would be wearing a black toga this time! Seeing the parents’ warm smiles as their sons and daughter walked on stage and received their certificates and medals. It was a moment of appreciation to students, especially parents, for their hard work in providing for their children. Jerill, one of the girls who witnessed the rites, said she felt proud because they did it even amid the pandemic! We wish them all the best and to “bloom where God would plant them.”

NUTRITION MONTH CELEBRATION

“New normal na nutrisyon, sama-samang gawan ng solusyon!”
The COVID-19 pandemic has made us realize how much we have taken for granted our health. The global health crisis is an eye opener that we should prioritize our habits: drinking water, adequate sleep, healthy foods, maintaining cleanliness, etc. The LVF, led by its child advocates, held a month-long Nutrition Month celebration! They prepared various activities for the community! The sisters and staff joined them in their opening ceremony, where they had Zumba. Ms. Edralyn also gave an overview of the celebration. Dra. Martha Tioseco, RMP, MD, discussed good nutrition for LVF girls and CPC Communities. There was a friendly cooking competition where they prepared healthy breakfast, lunch, and snacks for all.

27th DVP NATIONAL CONVENTION ON VOCATION MINISTRY IN THE SYNODAL CHURCH

In response to the call of Pope Francis to Consecrated Men and Women to be beacons of Light and joy to the world, the FMA Congregation in the Philippines and Papua New Guinea opted to intensify vocation promotion and therefore assigned more sisters in different areas termed as cluster areas. Sr. Erlinda Soriano, FMA from LVC Cubao, is set in Metro Manila and was asked to attend a two-day Webinar organized by the Directors of Vocations in the Philippines (DVP) as a member of the Provincial Vocation Team. The 27th DVP National Convention on Vocation Ministry in the Synodal Church was dabbed as KASAMA ALL. They have excellent and relevant speakers, and some representatives shared their Congregation’s best practices on vocation promotion.  Sr. Erly said that the webinar was, for her, a fresh start to fuel their zeal to promote vocations and become witnesses of Jesus Christ.

LVC ONE ‘DEFYING GRAVITY’ STORY

One ‘defying gravity’ story this July at the Laura Vicuna Center, Cubao.  Diana (not her real name) was a 13-year-old girl when she came to the Residential Center and had stayed for almost two years. She was a jolly, intelligent girl who used to be the ‘bunso’ (youngest) in the center and, therefore, the apple of everybody’s eyes.  With all the good and not-so-good traits she possessed, the Sisters won’t forget her consistent prayer, her everyday prayer that she sees her mother and siblings again. One afternoon in June, a woman came to the Center asking the staff at the reception desk if Diana was at the center and introduced herself as the mother.  She told the Social Workers that she had been looking for Diana and that her other five children were already with her.  At that time, the Vicunians were in Negros, but the Sisters wasted no time contacting the mother to give Diana the chance to talk to them. Diana was so happy and eager to be reunited with her family, and the Sisters granted her wish as best for her.  Sr. Marivic said the family is the best place for a child to heal and grow.  On July 26, 2022, the Sisters finally asked Diana’s mother to come and fetch her to live with them in the province.  It was a sight to behold when they embraced; we were indeed sad that Diana would leave, but we were doubly happy to know that she would be in her rightful place now.  @LVF, WE DEFY GRAVITY.

LVC AND OUR CARE FOR OUR COMMON HOME

LVF has long committed itself to the CARE OF OUR COMMON HOME; we @ LVC Cubao consistently ‘do’ Laudato Si and try to make it our ‘way of life. Composting w/ vegetable peelings & food refuse + used papers = good as new soil. Planting vegetables for our community consumption. Shane shared that planting gave her serenity and joy. “…excited ako na kapag lumaki ito, makakain namin ang bunga. At higit sa lahat nakakatulong rin kami sa environment”, she added. (I am excited for the plants to grow, and we’ll be able to eat them. And most importantly, we are helping the environment). Indeed, this gives joy and calmness to the soul. This also teaches the value of environmental responsibility among the young, for everything we do affects the environment.

LVF-PASWI CIRCLE OF PRAYER

The Circle of Prayer (COP), organized by the Philippine Association of Social Workers Inc. (PASWI), coordinated by Sr. Marivic Sta. Ana, FMA of the Laura Vicuna Foundation (LVF), continues to gather Social Workers in the Philippines to pray together. In his reflection, Sir Daryl James Valdez of Southern Leyte said, “…this Circle of Prayer is our manifestation that it is not just about being together as a group, but it is all about being faithful and being true to Lord that we all believe and serve.” Every Wednesday night, different chapters lead the COP. It has become a Wednesday habit for Social Workers regardless of their religious affiliation.

June 2022 News

Talitha Kum! In June

Jesus’ word to the little girl of the Centurion Jarius in the Gospel ‘TALITHA KUM’ strongly resounded at the LAURA VICINA FOUNDATION INC.  This phrase has been very dear and loaded with meaning for the Foundation as our Institution’s battle cry is “We Give Hope a Home” juxtaposed with the “little girl, Arise” of Jesus Christ.  We have been consistent with our mission vision over the years, primarily for disadvantaged and at-risk children and young people.  And therefore, every step forward, be it small or big, is greatly valued and lauded.  Moreover, it is celebrated with much affirmation of the evident progress achieved not only by our young beneficiaries but even the tireless dedication of our staff in implementing our existing programs.

YES! It was a ‘little girl, ARISE’ month for all of us @ LVF!

Moving Up and Graduation of the LVC Girls

Hats off to LVF’s seven (7) Scholars who are one step closer to reaching their dreams!

  • Ms. Desiree Ligutan completed her grade 10 at UST Angelicum under its Re-entry Education Agenda for the Poor (REAP)Program;
  • Ms. Jazlyn Narvadez, Grade 10, Colegio de Sta. Ana de Victorias-Negros Occidental;
  • Four Senior High School (Accountancy, Business, and Management, & Computer Software Servicing) students – Ms. Edralyn Abia, Ms. Jessabelle Cos, Ms. Khayerale Leal, Ms. Pamela Santos;
  • Ms. Chelsea Salera, who graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education (BEEd) at CSAV)!

Ms. Abia and Ms. Cos graduated as academic awardees! “I am so happy because this only happens once in our lives!” said Edralin. Indeed, this significant milestone in their lives is like sweet chocolates in their taste buds! The sight of the event witnessed by the whole community of LVC with the girls, Sisters, and some of the Staff at CSAV, Negros Occidental was awe-inspiring.  Indeed, it has left an indelible effect on the younger ones who are still struggling to diligently study daily that after all the hard work, it will all be paid off.
On the other hand, the Foundation indeed felt confirmed by all the hard work and efforts to continue to serve its clientele best.

LVF’s #weareBUDDIES: BUILDING ALLIANCES IN THE GRASSROOTS

The Laura Vicuna Foundation, through her representative Ms. Mercedes Juncia has reached a total of eight hundred thirty-eight (838) attendees for her advocacy sessions on I am BRAVE (Buddies Reject Abuse, Violence, and Exploitation) with the following breakdown: six hundred seventeen (617) parents, ninety-three (93) women, fifty (50) from the essential ecclesial community and seventy-eight (78) youth. For the parents, they have advocacy sessions on these different dates: June 1 with 30 parents from Manapla, June 8 with 47 parents, June 16 with 100 parents and June 22 with 95 parents from Tortosa, June 23 with 250 parents from Purisima and June 29 with 95 parents from Sta. Teresa. This is in partnership with DSWD-Manapla. For the women, they have their sessions on June 20 with 55 barangay health workers from Brgy. Poblacion and 38 women from Brgy. Alicante for June 21. This is in partnership with DSWD-E.B, Magalona. On June 26, there was a session with 50 from the essential ecclesial community of San Diego Parish, Silay City. As for the youth, 28 coming from the Central Manapla Youth Federation were given a session on June 5, while 50 were given a session on June 25 at Brgy. Magsaysay, Cadiz City. Most of the issues tackled were an eye opener for these participants. Others raised some questions. Some shared some insights too. These were the sharings: a barangay captain said that after the sexual abuse done to these people, one turned to be a lesbian, and another became a prostitute. Another nurse said there is a need to stop the culture of shame happening to these people by educating them. One said that her friend’s daughter posted nude pictures on their wall with her boyfriend. Her dignity was trampled, but she survived since she was now in Manila studying. One hacked her computer, and her nude pictures were circulated. She reported it to NBI but was told they could not do anything about it because they could not locate the IP address. Lastly, regarding domestic violence. They are afraid to report these cases and ask the help of the social worker how to do it. The sessions were very enriching. There were some difficulties that the social worker experienced, like riding a ‘habal-habal’ or motorcycle on muddy and rough roads and having no sound system, but these things were not a hindrance to her. These sessions gave her fulfillment.

#FOLLOW YOUR DREAM

After two and a half years of doing virtual sessions of Follow Your Dream(FYD), the Laura Vicuna Foundation (LVF) was able to conduct two sessions in Negros Occidental with one hundred two (102) participants. One is at Manapla Gymnasium last June 14, 2022, with fifty (50) youth coming from our 4Ps beneficiaries, and in Balas Daku, Escalante, on June 19, 2022, with fifty-two (52) B.S. Psychology students of Colegio de Sta. Ana de Victorias, one of our youth advocates, discussed the Bawal Bastos Act. All of these were facilitated by our LVF youth advocates. One of the attendees shared that she admired her mother the most because, as a single parent, her mother has done so much for them. One sharer also said that her goal in life is to get out of her comfort zone and be the person God wanted her to become.

DOLE WORLD DAY AGAINST CHILD LABOR CULMINATING ACTIVITY!

On June 27, 2022, LVF participated in the 2022 World Day against Child Labor Culminating Activity organized by DOLE-NCACL (National Council against Child Labor) at Ichikawa Hall, OSHC, Diliman, Quezon City. As one of the councils and an organization that supports its programs in the elimination of Child labor in the Philippines, LVF provides administrative support based on the needs and capacity. This activity also served as a platform for inter-agency dialogue vs. Child labor, which was participated by different stakeholders from national agencies, local government units, the private sectors, and international partners who focused on various initiatives on various issues in the prevention and elimination of child labor.  LVF has a life-long commitment to its mission of empowering and protecting children from the different forms of abuse. This problem of Child labor that deprives children of their childhood, potential, and dignity as a person needs to be eliminated. It can only be achieved with the support and participation of different stakeholders, especially society.

VISIT OF DON BOSCO MONDO PROJECT OFFICERS

Last June 11, 2022, the Laura Vicuna Foundation Inc., Cubao, was visited by Don Bosco Mondo representatives, Mr. Sebastian Schuster and Mr. Steffan Carl Marziniak, accompanied by Sr. Aurora Roble, FMA FMA Provincial head of all TVET Centers.  They were warmly welcomed by Sr. Analyn Guerrero, FMA, with Ms. Joseilyn Hugo, RSW, and Ryan Azucena, RSW.  They were toured in the house especially showing them the different types of equipment they have given the Center; most significant was the Solar Power System for our residential home, heavy-duty baking mixer, and online equipment such as laptops, vlogging microphones, and ring lights.  Another valuable help granted to us by Don Bosco Mondo was the educational and financial assistance for the girls that would assure their continued quality education for them.  And as they visit the Center, they are trying to identify other needs where they can be of help; they interviewed Ryan Azucena on the Solar Power System and other points about their visit.  One striking thing that happened during their visit was when they saw the lecture board used by our social workers to educate our girls on Sustainable Development Goals; both visitors complimented the foundation for a real job well done for our young people.  To Don Bosco Mondo, we look forward to more projects done together for the  young!  Viva Don Bosco.

AN ARISE EXPERIENCE

I am Danah (not my real name), 19 years old, a resident of the Laura Vicuna Center, Cubao; I have been in the Center for four years. I want to share my ‘ once-in-a-lifetime experience in Victorias, Negros Occidental, this month of June.  I hope I will be allowed to speak not only on my personal ‘take’ on this experience but also on speaking for my companions in residence—the Sisters, headed by Sr. Marivic Sta. Ana, FMA painstakingly tried to find means to give the 7 of us the possibility of attending the onsite graduation at the Colegio de Sta. Ana de Victorias (CSAV). I am proud to know that I will be graduating with High Honors! My heart is filled with so much joy to have the opportunity to meet my classmates and other students as well from different strands, in person, after attending the online classes! It was nice to belong to a big, prestigious school like CSAV.  I, for my part, was so excited and nervous because it was my first time going out of Manila, so it was for us all, Vicunians.  I am most grateful to the STA.ANA FAMILY for making our stay in Negros very memorable, and indeed, a ‘once in a lifetime – significant event of my life, not to mention that all, ‘as in’ all were given for FREE, from transportation, food, accommodation, grand vacation at the beach and all our other needs.

Staying together is not new to us anymore as we are all residents of the Center. Our bonds were made stronger during this vacation by literally praying, living together under one roof, and doing advocacies together. Yes, we were prepared to go around towns and villages in Negros with our Social Workers. I feel like I am sent for a mission, to do a mission among my fellow youth.  These tasks made me overcome shyness and try a little harder to go out of myself and became an encouragement to others.  I  began to see life in a broader view; I’ve realized that we, young people are just the same, speaking one language, sharing similar experiences, and aspiring for more incredible things in life.  I felt my spirit being lifted above my fears and tears. This is one experience I treasured most.

We all know that staying near the sea for quite a long time has many health benefits; this is also true with the soul’s health. I loved our prayers and meditation at the seashore to start the day. I am excited about going for a swim, playing, riding the kayak, and staying by the beach. I felt solace, calm, and consolation.  I gradually opened my soul to the healing power of God through nature.  Prayer became ‘silent’; it is just being there with the Lord, being present with Jesus, and going through my life experiences with Him.  This brought me to ‘inner healing’; I have seen hard truths in my life in the light of faith.  In our moments of reflection, God showed me how to forgive, RISE above all pains, and LIVE, not just exist.

Endless thanks to the Laura Vicuna Foundation Inc., to our Mother Provincial, Sr. Tita Padron, FMA, who allowed us to go to Negros.  To Sr. Marivic, our ‘mother’ in the Center, to the Sisters, Staff, and my companions, and again and again and again to the STA. ANA FAMILY, may our Good Lord Bless you more.

WEDNESDAY STOP-OVER WITH THE LORD: PASWI-COP

The Philippine Association of Social Workers Inc. (PASWI) continues to be a sacred space every Wednesday night with its Circle of Prayer (COP)! The PASWI-Pampanga Chapter led the group to pray for three Wednesdays focusing on Leadership, One-of-a-kind resiliency, Victory of a servant leader, and Empowerment, taking the first letters of each focus, which will give the word LOVE! Sir Ronnel Golimlim emphasized that LOVE motivated them to continue doing what they are doing-helping people! The University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos (Bacolod City, Neg. Occ.)  Sowing Legacy Movement In.-Social Work Department co-hosted the first Wednesday of the month! Each is sharing their journey as a person, as a professional, and as a believer who is anchored to God. Indeed, every Wednesday is a stop-over with the Lord.

Glow up is an informal term for a positive personal transformation, typically one involving significant changes in appearance and style and often also growth in confidence and maturity (and sometimes aspects of personal or professional life).Mar 24, 2022

Yes, LVF can rightfully claim that this month of MAY is a ‘glow up month’!  LVF with its sheer determination continued to move forward, has grown depth and expanded its network and linkages in its services for the children and youth.

CHILDREN’S CONSULTATION FOR THE VOLUNTARY NATIONAL REVIEW ON THE 2030 AGENDA FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT – SDGS – LUZON CLUSTER

May 16-18, 2022. LVF child representatives, Jerrill Nadora,14 from the Residential Home for Girls in Cubao and Aljohn Manuel,16 from LVF-Child Protection Clinic on Wheels (CPC) in Botocan Quezon City, participated in a 3-day session on Voluntary National Review (VNR) of the Sustainable Development Goàls (SDG) Consultation Meeting-Luzon Cluster at Novotel Manila, Araneta, Quezon City spearheaded by CWC, CRN, PLCPD and UNICEF. They were accompanied by Ms. Josielyn Hugo LVF Social Worker.  VNR is the annual country report on the progress of the Philippines’ performance in implementing the SDGs. The country report will be presented at the high-level political forum in June 2022.

Participatory sessions like these allowed the children’s voices not only to be listened to but hopefully to be considered in presenting the status of the country’s SDG performance. Moreover, the resulting recommendations are seen to have a future impact in their overall development, particularly in meeting their rights, since CRC and SDGs are inextricably linked. The small workshop groups, combined with other engaging activities elicited active participation from the children. Among the major inputs of the LVF children were: workshop style.  Our LVF representatives strongly affirmed that this seminar was indeed a growth experience for them.

LVF YOUTH ADVOCATES AT THE COUNCIL FOR THE WELFARE OF CHILDREN PLANNING AND BRAINSTORMING SESSION!

LVF as a consistent member of the CWC has been a valuable contributor to its projects for children and youth.  LVF’s Child Advocates have been tapped by CWC for years now to participate in its Planning and Brainstorming Sessions.  Last May 14, 2022,  LVF’s Child Advocates Victoria Columna,15 and Shane Yap,14 attended the four-day Planning and Brainstorming Sessions in preparation for the National Children’s Month (NCM) 2022. The meeting served as a preparatory activity for the month-long NCM celebration.  The planning of major activities at the national and regional levels fostered substantive child participation and helped leaders speak on behalf of their agencies and other children. The activity was an engaging and empowering experience for the young.  We thank CWC for recognizing the capabilities and talents of our Child Advocates in this field and for giving them the encouragement to be leaders and contributors in the formation of their fellow children and young people.  YES, WE CAN DO IT.

TESDA ACCREDITATION of the LAURA VICUNA FOUNDATION INC. TVET CENTER QC

After years of rigorous work and offering effective technical-vocational education programs for the youth, the LVF TVET center located at 55 F. Manalo St. Brgy. Pinagkaisahan, Cubao, Quezon City received its program registration from the Technical Education Skills Development Authority on May 5, 2022, by virtue of a Certificate of TVET Program Registration given by TESDA Regional Director Florencio Sunico, Jr., CESO III. The LVF TVET Center in Cubao will henceforth continue to conduct a program in Bookkeeping NC III.

The operation of the TVET Center, including the preparation of all necessary requirements to be granted a program registration was a collaborative endeavor spearheaded by its Coordinator, Sr. Analyn Guerrero, FMA who tirelessly worked with her companion teacher/staff Ms. Felina Narvaez in running the program.

Both acknowledge with gratefulness the motivation and support of  Sr. Marivic Sta. Ana, FMA, Managing Director of LVF for her leadership and guidance, as well as the  rest of the LVF family- the Sisters in the Community,  the LVF Staff, and Company Partners for their sustaining support. LVF commends and thanks especially the PUNO LAW Office for its competent legal expertise.  Thank you too to the President of the LVF, Sr. Teresita Padron, FMA and its Board of directors.  All for the care and the salvation of youth.

I am BRAVE (BUDDIES REJECT ABUSE, VIOLENCE and EXPLOITATION!) Seminar Workshop

The COVID-19 pandemic has become part of our lives and is challenging us to adjust to new ways of navigating our world. Technology has advanced, particularly in the era of internet connectivity. Internet use for the young has surfaced advantages and disadvantages, particularly on the safe and proper use of this communication technology. LVF is cognizant of the possible harm that improper internet exposure can bring particularly to the young who are, and will continue to be exposed to it. The phenomenon of online sexual abuse and exploitation of children (OSAEC) has emerged strongly especially during the pandemic. Acknowledging that everyone can and should disrupt the harmful effects from unsafe use of the internet, particularly in abetting sexual violence, LVF conceptualized advocacy sessions focused on the theme: BUDDIESReject Abuse, Violence and Exploitation (BRAVE)! These sessions specifically aimed  to capacitate participants to be an active partner in empowering their friends and fellow young people to be collaborators in protecting each other from new forms of sexual violence.

Mrs. Mercedes Juncia, LVF Social Worker tapped the community leaders of different barangays and evangelical churches as partners in this endeavor. The month-long initiative reached   a total of three hundred nine (309) participants coming from seven (7) areas:  KJV Bible Christian Church, Escalante City (50) on May 11; Brgy. Purisima, Central Manapla (30) and Brgy. 7, Victorias City (11) on May 15; Potter’s House Christian Fellowship Church (25) on May 20; United Pentecostal Church-Vineyard (80) and Brgy. 20 Binanlutan (61) on May 22 Brgy. Consing (52) on May 28. After the sessions, the participants were able to learn about early warning signs of OSAEC, determining whether the place is safe or not; the different touches-the safe, unsafe and confusing touches and who to network with or report to concerning any form of abuse, violence and exploitation. The referral pathway to access support and service in addressing all forms of abuse and exploitation was reviewed by the participants. One youth participant shared that they should be very careful in posting in their social media accounts.  They should not post their personal information or their pictures.  A mother said that she always tells her children not to let anybody touch the sensitive part of their body and another one said that as a barangay health worker in their barangay, she always tells the youth that she is available to whoever needs her help.

“Looking back to these sessions, I still have a long way to go.  It is quite difficult for me to have a paradigm shift, and to reach more people, our ka-BUDDIES, in fighting abuses and exploitation in the midst of the pandemic. I am happy to be back and be able to continue with God’s mission in my life.” – Mrs. Juncia said.

LVC UST- ANGELICUM SCHOLARS LEVEL UP

MORNESE VIRTUAL PILGRIMAGE (by the FMA Institute): WALKING WITH MAIN

LVF Staff, Ms. Mercedes Juncia, Ms. Felina Narvaez, Ms. Josielyn Hugo, Ms. Analiza Corro, Ms. Virgie Jison Ms. Rosea Monsay, Ms. Rose Jean Gonzales joined the Virtual pilgrimage “Walking with you, Main”. This is in preparation for the 150th founding anniversary of the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians which is held virtually every 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month from February to May 24 via Zoom from 3:00-4:00 PM organized by the Salesian Family Sector of the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians. “Who is Main? I do not know who Main was. But the virtual pilgrimage allowed me to get a glimpse of her life as I journeyed with my fellow lay in walking with Main. She was a woman of power-a power that influences others, a compelling power that touches other people’s hearts; and constantly renews them in the presence of God. Her accompaniment towards young people drew them closer to Him. And I pray, as a lay mission partner, that I may awaken Main’s spirit in me- one that inspires, gives hope,  loves and accepts.. and most especially, one that enkindles my strong faith in God!” –Ms. Sai

IN FOCUS:  ST. DOMINIC SAVIO  … (A SALESIAN YOUTH SAINT)

On May 6, the feast day of St. Dominic Savio,  the LVC girls thought it best to share their Salesian Youth Spirituality treasured model of the Youth St. Dominic Savio to our LVF TVET Center QC Trainees. This activity was spearheaded by our two LVF Child Advocates, Remilyn Olediana and Desiree Ligutan. How empowering and consoling it was to see that our former recipients of Salesian formation are now sharing their knowledge and love of Salesian role models/Saints with their fellow youth. The youth are widening their circle of influence as far as their Salesian identity is concerned.  A two thumbs up and a job well done to both of you.

LVF READ ALONG in honor of St. Mary Mazzarello –  “Si Main ang Batang In na In”

April 2022 News

FRILLS AND THRILLS OF APRIL

The month of April @ LVF surely got exciting and thrilling as it was Easter month.  New life, fresh start, new beginnings- these were the guiding motivations of this month.  Cognizant of the need to continue observing health protocols due to the ongoing pandemic, our major initiatives this month were done in a creative and engaging manner for all participants.

LVF SOLIDARITY CUM POLITICAL EDUCATION ADVOCACY

The Lord’s Resurrection, Easter Sunday was an opportunity to share the Living Bread and nurture hope and nourishment for LVF’s five child protection clinic (CPC) communities located in Barangay Pinagkaisahan, Hillcrest, Judge Jimenez, Taguig and Botocan. LVF staff packed 600 bags containing cooked spaghetti, bread, eggs, and included rosaries for sharing with the children and families in these five areas. The children were so happy to receive these gifts. The occasion also included a talk on political education given by one of LVF’s volunteers Ms. Carol Thor. She highlighted guidelines for choosing good leaders for our country .The mothers learned much from Ms. Thor and committed to be guided by sound values rather than money in their choice of leaders for the May national election.   LVF’s way of celebrating Easter this year showed the power of new life and hope in Jesus, the Risen Lord.

SR. RUNITA BORJA, FMA, COUNSILLOR FOR YOUTH PASTORAL @ LVC

April 12, 2022 was a long awaited day for the LVF Family because Sr. Runita Borja, (Sr. Bing), FMA- Councillor for Youth Pastoral chose to visit the Center almost immediately upon her arrival in Manila.  We were very happy when Sr. Bing said that we were the first community she visited! We may not give her the most expensive presents but we saw how genuinely pleased and happy she was with our handmade gifts (the crochet Easter eggs, canvass bags designed by the Vicunians). She appreciated the gifts made with love and personal touch by the Vicunians.  Our hearts were filled with joy to have met Sr. Bing in person.

Sr. Bing enthusiastically listened to our stories and shared with us her knowledge and experiences with young people as well as other communities similar to LVF. She shared that there are many young people who worked hard to achieve their dreams. She particularly talked about young people who are passionate about life and who have high hopes despite adversities they experienced.

May-may (a Vicunian) in her welcoming message said “Sobra po kaming nagpapasalamat sa presensya ninyo, Sr. Bing. Napakalaking biyaya po ng inyong presensya mula sa Diyos dahil pinadalhan nya kami ng Madre na nagrerepresent ng presensya ni Maria na Ina nating lahat. Naniniwala kami na sa [pagbisita ninyong ito ay ang pagbisita rin ni Mama Mary sa amin.” (We are very grateful for your presence Sr. Bing. Your presence is a grace from God for He has sent you- You who represents Mary, Mother of All. WE believe that your visit is Mary’s visit to us.)

Provincial Canonical Visitation by Sr. Teresita Padron, FMA @ LVF

April 25-27, 2022. Sr. Teresita Padron, FMA, fondly called Sr. Tita blessed our community with her joyful presence! We excitedly welcomed her at the front door of the Center with a short cheer-dance and an upbeat song “Ikaw ang Sunshine ko”. We then proceeded immediately to pray via a song the Salve Regina as was the custom when a Superior visits a community.  We continued on welcoming her visit with the girls’ folk dancing and stories.  Sr. Tita was indeed happy and entertained by our performance as she joyfully clapped and affirmed the performances. We were also delighted to know that she will be with us for a number of days. Alas, the time had come for our most awaited encounter with Sr. Tita, exclusively with us, Vicunians. We were very much enlightened with her words especially when she emphasized; “If you want to be successful, you have to earn it”.  What we want to be in the future became clearer to us. We realized the importance of striving harder to achieve our goals in life. She really encouraged us to pursue our dreams and be ready with the challenges we might face along the way.  Sr. Tita’s visit brought great joy to all of us. We believe that her presence is a gift as she represents Mary, our Mother and Teacher. How heartwarming it was to be visited by a person who loves us like a mother. This experience with Sr. Tita will forever remain in our hearts, a precious memory indeed.  It is as if a fire of motivation was lit within us to strive harder and respond to the Sisters’ consistent call for us to be good Christians and productive, honest citizens. As we bid her farewell after her Canonical Visit, we prayed that the Lord continuously bless her with the guidance of the Holy Spirit to be for all young people a living Mama Mary who accompanies us in our journey towards holiness.

JOY AT THE CENTER OF LENT – LVF STAFF RECOLLECTION

April 12. “Lent is a  sacred time when we remember and feel the depth of God’s love for us expressed in the Paschal Mystery. It is in this moment of deep silence and prayer that we are able to reconnect with God and appreciate the joy that He brought to our lives.” Sr. Candy Carmen Balverde, FMA . The Laura Vicuña Foundation (LVF) staff had their Lenten Recollection with Sr. Candy Carmen Balverde, FMA centered on the theme “Joy in the center of Lent”.  Sr. Candy presented the important figures during the New Testament who found joy after witnessing and experiencing  Christ profoundly  in their lives.  At the end of the session the staff shared that henceforth nothing can disturb them.  Amidst the pains, sufferings and difficulties they have experienced, it is only God who can give them joy and peace in His loving presence.  It is only Him who can satisfy their inner longings.  For them, only God suffices.

SALESIAN FAMILY VOCATION FESTIVAL HOMEBOUND: WHERE LOVE STAYS IN GOD’S EMBRACE

April 02. The LVF Community joined the 2022 Salesian Family Vocation Festival. This is an effort to make known the different Salesian Family members and promote the vocation to different states of life (priestly, religious, family life and single-blessedness). Ms. Sai, LVF lay mission partner who joined the festival said: “It was a great experience of getting to know more about the Salesian Family and realizing how deeply they are able to touch the lives of young people, their families, and the community where they are present. This, also, is an opportunity to find your calling…to listen to that small voice within, an invitation to one and all! Looking forward to next year!” It was like a homecoming where all community’s warm hands were outstretched, ready to take you in.

STAYING ANEW IN GOD’S FORGIVING PRESENCE

By: Remy-LVF Child Advocate
April 13.  The  Sacrament of Reconciliation leads one to feel an inner freedom. In fact for Remy, it feels like “we are not going to hide anymore, we no longer cover our faces because of shame, for God has already forgiven us”. All we need to do is to refrain from doing that same kind of mistake again and start fresh.  We feel like there is no need to worry about our souls because we are already free. It’s time to change while we still can. It is time to repent and turn our back and fight temptations. We are grateful to Fr. Favie Faldas, SDB for hearing our confession.

MOMENTS OF SILENCE: THE LVF GIRLS’ RECOLLECTION

By Edralyn Abia
Recollection is a time of silence, of being quiet and of being with ourselves, most especially, to reconnect with the Almighty!. We are very grateful for the opportunity that we were able to have a recollection with Sr. Ana Guerrero, FMA-our recollection facilitator, in preparation for the Lord’s resurrection. It helped me to pray very well and this has become a chance for me, and for us to improve our relationship with God, and a moment of deep knowing of who I am in the presence of the Father Almighty. We also had a happy death exercise which compelled us to think deeper about our actions and the directions of our lives as young people. It is a moment of self-discovery as we face our fears- the reality of DEATH. No one is invincible, but are we ready to follow the light when we are being called? Are we like St. Dominic Savio ready to face the Creator any time? How we want others to remember us really depends on ourselves, on the choices we make. It was a beautiful recollection. It is heartwarming. I experienced true peace during this graced moment with the Lord.

WOMEN’S MONTH CELEB

March is a celebration of women exercising their choices, taking chances to make their voices heard, and benefitting from and trailblazing changes. It is a celebration of Filipino women’s power to take the narrative, raise priority issues that matter to them, and call for concrete actions.

March 07. LVF SOCIAL WORKERS graced Barangay Pinagkaisahan’s invite, headed by its Punong Barangay Kap Graziella Saab, during the Kick Off Ceremony of the 2022 National Women’s Month Celebration which was held at Pinagkaisahan Barangay Hall during their flag ceremony! Capping the 6-year recurring theme of the 2022 National Women’s Month “WE MAKE CHANGE WORK FOR WOMEN”, it focused on the sub-theme: “Agenda ng Kababaihan, Tungo Sa Kaunlaran.”  Mrs. Mercedes Juncia, LVF social worker led the assembly into prayer while Ms. Josielyn Hugo gave a keynote speech on the value and role of women in Nation Building to Barangay staff and councils as well as different women sectors.

But, what does it mean to be a woman? In this section, we will see that women are more than just looks and glamour. The LVF Community gave us a glimpse about them being a woman! And not only that, we are blessed that men also stands with us! LVF presents the BABAE KA SERIES:

ST. JOSEPH: A MODEL OF FATHERLY PRESENCE

March 20. In celebration of the Feast Day of St. Joseph, Sr. Teresita Mislang, FMA facilitates a session on the life and the loving presence of St. Joseph in FMA-Educating Community, to its Child Protection Communities, Oratorians of St. Mary Mazzarello Novitiate, MHCS-Mabalacat Pampanga, Aspirante Canlubang Oratory. St. Joseph’s values sparked a conversation during the session. His obedience, a good example and a role model with his upbringing to Jesus to fathers.  Mr. Mark, in his father’s point of view, shared “Gagawin mo ang lahat para protektahan at maibigay ang pangangailangan ng pamilya at gabayan ang anak sa Kristiyanog pananampalataya.” (As a father, you will do everything to protect and provide the needs of your family and most especially, guide them towards Christian Faith).

(St. Joseph is not only a teacher of the young. He is a loving father. We believe that with the passing of time and days, we may not see him but we can feel his presence. He loves us. You can come and talk to him whenever you have problems. He is with Jesus and Mary who are always ready to help. And at times, you may stumble, he will lift you up. He can calm your weeping heart.)  She, furthermore, encouraged everyone, children, young people, member of a family and the educating community to come together and build and unite as one family.   A special rosary preceded the said feast.

PASWI CIRCLE OF PRAYER

Our brothers and sisters in faith from Mindanao gladly led the Wednesday Circle of Prayer for the month of March. We are grateful for PASWI North and South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, General Santos and Maguindanao-Cotabato Chapters! The PASWI COP really proved that there is unity in diversity. We are delighted that our Muslim brothers and sisters shared and open their doors, letting us in to their faith. Indeed, Catholics, Christian, Muslim, whatever your faith persuasion is, there is that common belief that someone is greater than us.

GRATITUDE DAY 2022:
LVF FIESTA FOREVER. INSPIRED. EMPOWERED. SAFE. KAYATHANKFUL. ALWAYS sa’yo SR. VIC

Gratitude comes from the abundance of the heart! We cannot but dedicate days of Gratitude to one another and most especially to our Community Animator Sr. Marivic a day to express our sincere thank you for her presence in our community and her love, counsel, guidance and care of each of us.  Our theme says it all, we are INSPIRED by her life, EMPOWERED by her educative style, feels SAFE by her motherly presence and the HOME-COMMUNITY environment she creates that made our hearts burst with THANKFULNESS and LOVE!

Our community song… Bahay namin maliit lamang…. Dito ka sa Laura dahil may Pag-asa, tayo na sa Laura Mahal tayo ni Sister! … Mahal namin Sr. Vic pagkat s’ya’y SIMPLE lamang, kahit may problema basta’t kami ay sama-sama! says it all.  Sr. Vic is a very simple, caring and wisdom-filled person who is far from being higher than any of us yet effectively carries the community to greater heights.  Oyrs too is a simple community, not a perfect one but builds itself painstakingly day by day by the grace of God and the love of Mama Mary.  The day’s celebration will always be etched in our hearts, and may it serve as inspiration to all who read this article, that life need not be extravagant, we must focus on the ‘essentials’ to stay together in love.

Intensified PRAYERS  for UKRAINE and RUSSIA

“Lord, Heal our Land” was our constant plea to the Lord.  Our weekly WAY OF THE CROSS, daily HOLY ROSARY and daily EUCHARISTIC ADORATION was offered for PEACE in these countries.  We believe that our Good and Loving God hear our prayers and Mama Mary’s never failing intercession sustains the hope of the people of both countries  that war will cease and dialogue, brotherhood will prevail.
