FEB-MAZING FEBRUARY 2024

Is it a Feb-mazing month?! February is the second month of the year and this year, we have a leap day! The leap day balances our calendars with the earth’s orbit, preventing seasons from drifting out of place and ensuring equinoxes, solstices, and all the annual events follow their schedule. At LVF, this means leaping into life’s new chapter, especially during the Family Day celebration where family bond and relations is renewed and strengthened; the successful examination of the Scholars which would determine their moving on to their next year’s level; the recollection and retreat of the graduating LVF TVET trainees in Cubao; the spot monitoring by the DSWD on LVF’s programs and activities; and the visit of Sr. Teresita Padron, FMA to Palawan and in Malihao!

These monthly achievements keep us grounded, and steady and it fuels our desire to do more and to reach children, young people, and families! These keep us going.

Feb. 25. Every year, Mr. Precious and Mrs. Alice Andam, a US-based couple and LVF’s good friends and donor, sponsor a Family Dayꟷ for the LVF girls’ families to gather together. As the girls’ family members come one by one, the girls are on cloud nine and are teary-eyed when each starts going home. Mrs. Alice reminded the girls in her speech how important it is to “… set your goals high” Additionally, Mr. Precious stressed that “life has a lot of distraction. No matter what, finish your schooling It will lead you to success.” It’s crucial to focus on your life goals.

Feb. 10. Under the UST Angelicum REAP (Re-entry Education Agenda for the Poor), the LVF girls who are its scholars, diligently studied their different modules! Dressed in their uniforms, the scholars eagerly took their examinations. Even though a few of them struggled to complete their test papers, their faces were filled with radiant smiles when they finally were able to pass the exams.

YOUTH TOWNHALL:
DIALOGUE WITH UN ASSISTANT SECRETARY-GENERAL FELIPE PAULLIER

Feb. 14. The Laura Vicuna Foundation, Inc. Social Workers, Ms. Angie Mae Villaren and Ms. Ma. Patricia Soqueña, joined the Youth Townhall: Dialogue with UN Assistant Secretary-General Felipe Paullier! The town hall is full of young people, including student leaders, barangay SK officials, organization volunteers, NGOs, and young and adult professionals who gathered at Lyceum of the Philippines, Intramuros, Manila. Mr. Paullier talked about the difficulties faced by young Filipinos and their potential for change, as well as their ability to create diverse venues across the nation. The dialogue was divided into three sections: Plan of Action, Youth Participation, and Challenges.

Everyone in the room had an opportunity to share about their struggles and current circumstances as young people dealing with the two most prevalent problems in today’s world: mental health problems and poverty. This conversation is about more than just airing grievances; it’s a conversation that will be taken to higher authorities to find a solution and close the gaps in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

While “others were dating with their special someone, my heart was full because I learned a lot during the discussion,” Ms. Angie said. Ms. Ma. Patricia rejoined, “We are so blest as it is a rare opportunity to dialogue with the UN Assistant Secretary-General”

LVF JOINS THE CSAAW DIALOGUE FORUM

Feb. 14. LVF through Ms. Ma. Patricia Soquena, RSW joined the Forum on Creating a Community of Hope (Help and Opportunity to Protect and Emancipate) for OSAEC and CSAEM via Zoom in commemoration of the National Awareness Week for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Exploitation (CSAAW). In addition to creating a community of hope, the dialogue forum sought to increase public awareness of child sexual abuse and exploitation, spur community action against it, and provide “opportunities to protect children from online sexual abuse and exploitation of children and also transitional of this and exploitation materials.” The event also discussed forms of sexual gender-based violence that occur both offline and online.

“I’ve learned from this session that every action matters and that we should be conscious of what’s going on in the world, especially concerning our children who may have and are vulnerable to experience sexual abuse or exploitation,” Ms. Soquena said at the end of the forum. “Every child is a gift from God. We must protect them”

LVF JOINS THE KINSHIP CARE FORUM

Feb. 15. LVF joined the Kinship Care Forum: Rehabilitation and Reintegration of Survivors of Online Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children in commemoration of the 28th Child Sexual Abuse Awareness Week (CSAAW) organized by the Center for the Prevention & Treatment of Child Sexual Abuse (CPTCSA) in collaboration with Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC), KNH Philippines, Go-Just, Mission Alliance ACTVE, and Family for Every Child Global Alliance. Kinship care is under Republic Act 11642, also known as the Domestic Administrative Adoption and Alternative Childcare Act, Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC) Undersecretary Mr. Angelo Tapales said “Something that we haven’t talked about in great detail is that kinship care, also known as relative foster care, which is defined as full-time care provided by family members within the fourth degree of consanguinity for a child.”

According to a 2020 online child protection study conducted by End Child Prostitution and Trafficking, 40% of the kid respondents used social media to communicate with strangers. About 30% of people reported receiving sexual materials via social media, and 50% of people who might have been the victim of sexual assault did not disclose any incidents.

The best interests of the children are kept in mind during the brainstorming and discussion sessions. “After attending this forum, we learned a lot and realized that children are among the most vulnerable members of society because they rely so heavily on adults and the government.” Therefore, we must collaborate to safeguard and empower children and fulfill LVF’s Child Protection Clinic tagline, “Building a Culture of Protection for Children and the Young”, Ms. Soqueña shared.

LVF TVET TRAINEES’ RETREAT-RECOLLECTION

Feb. 24.  The LVF TVET Trainees had their retreat recollection led by Mr. Stephen Borja, brother of Sr. Runita ‘Bing’ Borja, General Councilor for Youth Ministry! Mr. Borja showed them the television series “The Chosen,” which tells the story of Jesus’ life and the calling of his earliest apostles. The trainees connected with the film because they believed that they were also called according to Isaiah 43:1: “Huwag kang matakot dahil niligtas kita, Tinawag kita sa pangalan mo. Akin ka” (Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.) Furthermore, Mr. Borja articulated Pope Francis’ message of rejoicing in hope.

This retreat recollection is customarily done before the TVET graduation. Since this is the batch during the Pandemic the Sisters would like to build strong bonds among the trainees and the LVF educating community.
